Hide and Seek, Theme of A.N.D.R.E.A.

@Mastersparx: I first heard this song on YouTube on a video involving Portal, so you may understand why I often associate that song with GLaDOS, who was the inspiration for A.N.D.R.E.A. However, there's a much deeper side when you mess around with the meaning of the lyrics in this song to fit A.N.D.R.E.A...

If you haven't read the article, A.N.D.R.E.A. is basically an active copy of a human mind functioning inside of a computer network. The person she was based on was the wife of the villain Lord Seth, who also created the copy. Just being what she is causes a lot of emotional conflict, something so simple yet so hard to explain...

Which is where the song comes in. I still have no exact idea what "Hide and Seek" is really about, but it can pass for A.N.D.R.E.A.'s emotions quite well...

Lyrics:

"where are we?
what the hell is going on?
the dust has only just begun to fall
crop circles in the carpet
sinking feeling

spin me round again
and rub my eyes,
this can't be happening
when busy streets amass with people
would stop to hold their heads - heavy
"

This basically would represent A.N.D.R.E.A. first waking up as a digital entity. She didn't know where she was, how she was still alive, or what was going on. "Crop Circles in the carpet" could represent the little 0's (acompanied by 1's) on the floors of the digital realm. "Spin me around again, and rub my eyes, this can't be happening" could represent the immediate panic and denial that overcame her upon gaining her bearings. I can't really do much with the whole "busy streets" thing. (if you can think of something, please tell me! ^^;)

"hide and seek
trains and sewing machines
all those years
they were here first
"

Simple enough. Trains and sewing machines were "living lives" as machines before A.N.D.R.E.A. and things like her.

"oily marks appear on walls
where pleasure moments hung before the takeover,
the sweeping insensitivity of this still life
"

In a scene in my concepts of the Axel and the Lord of the Machines video game (To be made with RPG Maker XP), A.N.D.R.E.A. had stopped by the abandonned home of Seth and the original Andrea in the form of a gynoid, and all the pictures and furniture were taken down. Pictures taken down = oily marks on walls where "pleasure moments" hung before the "Takeover, the sweeping insensitivity of this still life", which could be interpreted as the fact that machines can't feel (insensitivity), with the still life referring to the fact that her main unit is built into Seth's base and is always there, never moving.

"hide and seek
trains and sewing machines (oh, you won't catch me around here)
blood and tears (hearts)
they were here first
"

Slight modification to the chorus, "won't catch me around here" could be a message to Axel, who, along with his party search for A.N.D.R.E.A. and Seth throughout the RMXP game. Blood and tears could represent both the blood of the original Andrea and Seth's grieving over her, and the DNA samples that Seth got some of her data from.

"Mmmm whatcha say,
Mmmm that you only meant well?
well of course you did
Mmmm whatcha say,
Mmmm that its all for the best?
Of course it is
Mmmm whatcha say?
Mmmm that it's just what we need
you decided this
whatcha say?
Mmmm what did she say?
"

Definitely a message to Seth. Seth only meant well by "reviving" her, thought it was all for the best, and in the concepts for the RMXP game, Seth tells the original Andrea that a "second chance is just what we need" in order for them to fix their dying marriage. However, Andrea was soon murdered by the Dark Vangaras after that, so he decided to make the copy. He later tells the copy A.N.D.R.E.A. the whole "second chance" speech, when their relationship of mastermind & right-hand-woman starts to falter. A.N.D.R.E.A. doesn't have all of her original memories, so she then asked Seth how the original replied when he told her that. (what did she say?)

"ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut outs
speak no feeling no i don't believe you
you don't care a bit,
you don't care a bit"

This goes to Vangara Zakarae, who claims he can create a new human body for A.N.D.R.E.A. if she works for him. He isn't telling the truth, however, and only wants to sieze her network and have control of her army of robots. In that way, he, being the leader of the Dark Vangaras who killed the original, was in charge of taking her humanity, and is now offering it back at a price like a ransom note (which typically is constructed with newspaper word cutouts to disguise handwriting, and in "mid-sweet" talk just to play mind games). However, A.N.D.R.E.A. does not believe Zakarae's claims, and comes to the conclusion that he doesn't care anyway because he was the one responsible for killing the original.

Mm-kay... quite deep indeed....
