Mourning Becomes Ophelia

The full history of the Bride in Black remains a mystery, but there are three generally accepted origin stories for the elusive assassin. One may be true. All may be false. What is known, as it has been heard from the mouth of the woman herself, is that her strange choice of garb is meant to represent her sympathy for the loved ones of her victims.

Daughter of Discord

A daughter of Eris, the Greek goddess of Discord, the Bride in Black is a minor deity who lives only for war and bloodshed. She has been dispatched by Hades to retrieve the souls of those slotted for death.

Charge of Chiyome

The Bride in Black is a human woman, trained as a ku-no-ichi by the legendary Lady Chiyome Mochizuki in the Japan of the 1500s. Her immortality owes to a magic talisman sewn into her blindfold.

Maid of Murder

A primal spirit of murder, the Bride in Black subsists on the darkness of man and will exist until he no longer kills. She works as an assassin not because of the money, and not because she enjoys it, but because it is her nature.

Powers and Abilities

The full extent of the Bride in Black's preternatural power has yet to be revealed. The following is a compilation of what she has displayed, up to this point.

Powers

Invisibility: The Bride in Black has displayed the ability to fade from natural human perception.

Limited Omniscience: For reasons as yet unexplained, the Bride has some sort of natural knowledge of violent acts, no matter how long ago they occurred. It is as though she can 'see' the violent history (or violent potential) of a subject.

Soul Jar: The Bride in Black appears to have some means of entrapping the souls of those she has killed and using them to empower herself. The exact means by which she does this has not been revealed.

Supernatural Longevity: The Bride has been around for at least four hundred years, if reports are to be believed. The nature of her apparent immortality has yet to be determined.

Abilities

Martial Artist: The Bride is highly trained in multiple forms of martial arts including Savate, Capoeira, Tae Kwon Do and Judo.

Stealth Operative: As espionage agents go, the Bride is top-notch. She excels at moving unseen and infiltrating even the most secure areas.

Weapon Master: Trained extensively in the use of bladed weaponry, the Bride excels at all forms of bladed combat but prefers the use of the katar, also known as the Indian punch dagger.

Weaknesses

Grounded: Though she can leap very high and run very fast compared to the average person, the Bride in Black has no conventional 'travel powers'. She is therefore best attacked from the air.

Affiliations

To say that a mercenary such as the Bride in Black has 'affiliations' is perhaps to stretch the meaning of the word, but there are certain groups and persons who have contracted the Bride in current business partnerships. Though her allegiance can be bought, for the durations in which the Bride is contracted she maintains a ruthless loyalty.

Arachnos: Ghost Widow has employed the Bride in Black as a personal assassin on retainer since early 2000. She has no particular loyalty to Lord Recluse, but will follow Arachnos orders without question.

The League of Evil: A villainous organization led by the 'trocious Monkey, who has also maintained a contract-based business relationship with the Bride.
