Excerpt of the transcript of a conversation between Dr.[REDACTED] and Agent Carter:
Dr. [REDACTED]:
"The subject code named "Deathzone" was recovered during the Rikti Invasion along with another, deceased mutant. The genetic material of that one has already been used in [REDACTED]. Anyways. This one is in a constant state of emotional trauma which causes her to leak her decaying effect out uncontrollably even while heavily sedated..."
Agent Carter:
"And you are sure this is safe?"
Dr. [REDACTED]:
"...which the high-tech armor she is nigh permanently wearing these days automatically makes sure is always the case, on top of injecting her with a small dosage of mutant suppressant, bringing her powers down to a level just enough for her to use them in her docile state while being instructed via an integrated headset. With the aid of suggestive hypnosis, she is now more like a machine responding to simple commands. We made sure that her DOC discharge and control powers, are only used in precise and controlled ways, e.g. to form the substance into a pair of blades or a quick burst of it in a radius around her. I'll provide you with a list of trigger words and the tactical maneuvers, actions and different forms of her power usages that correspond with them. I ensure you that the subject is fully compliant, has received proper training and is ready to undergo test missions as a Paragon Protector, along with you back here in the control center to direct her every move. Her armor provides you with a constant camera and audio feed. You'll need to call her back to base every 24 hours to have her sedatives and mutant suppressant be refilled. She needs to consume a person worth of energy for her to sustain herself for about a week so don't worry too much about that. And if you have to make her feed, don't forget: If there are no people around, the local flora and fauna is just as valid of a food source for her. But if you already have her fighting people... I mean... why not kill two birds with one stone?"
Agent Carter:
"Right..."
History
The Angel Of Death, Johanna Grafstein, was a German resistance fighter during the second world war. She joined the allied forces upon their arrival in her area in ridding the world of the Nazis. After the war, Grafenstein became an american citizen and moved to Paragon City, fighting crime as a vigilante superhero for many years during her long lifespan. A team up in 1999 lead to her meeting her girlfriend, the mutant firefighter/superhero Autumn Sinclair, also know as "Splash!". In 2007, Grafenstein and Sinclair helped defend Paragon City against the Rikti Invaders. Both of them went missing, their bodies stolen from the battlefield. She has now made a reappearance as a puppet of Crey, only the chances of somebody recognizing her are almost null, given that the armor she is forced to wear even shields her sedated mind.
Powers
She can drain energy from living organisms in an area around her, which lends her the code name given by Crey Industries. The radius corresponds to her emotional state (0.4 inches to 1.9 miles). She used to be able to freely control the range and even turn this power on and off. The average human would need to stay engulfed by this aura for roughly an hour before death occurs. She can live off of energy acquired this way alone and even use it to fuel a perfect although comparatively slow cell regeneration. It is assumed, that using this process, she can potentially live forever. Deathzone is furthermore unable to feel physical pain of any sort. She is capable of discharging a substance dubbed DOC (Death on contact), pitch black in hue, which she can produce in either liquid or gaseous form and make it switch back and forth freely. She can also control its spacial position, making it move at will. Getting into contact with DOC has the same effect as being exposed to her aura, only with it being massively accelerated. Three seconds of accumulated skin contact within ten minutes drains an average human body of all "life". The biggest difference between DOC and her aura is, is that the former is not able to penetrate air tight spaces as it has a physical presence, while her aura appears to be a metaphysical, all penetrating phenomenon that as of now can only be described as a dimensional anomaly.
Power armor
The high-tech armor she is wearing is a largely outsourced part of project "Deathzone" code named "Birdcage". It provides excellent resistance versus physical trauma, pure energy, environmental dangers of any sort and even psionic attacks. It also enhances Deathzone's strength and speed while allowing her to fly. Injectors administering her sedatives and mutant suppressant on a timer are installed along with fail-safes. It is also equipped with an internal waste disposal system, life sign monitoring, access to a fully functional computer, communications device, heat and night vision, basic cloaking functionality and is, aside from sealable, tiny openings all over it, which allow for DOC to get out, completely airtight. An oxygen tank is not needed as Deathzone can quite easily survive on drained energy alone. The armor is fueled by in internal fusion reactor based on Rikti technology, with an estimated run time of 702,461 years.
