Humble Beginnings

Dr. Malleus (Malleus Formicarius) was born in 1434 in Nienburg, a small village in medieval Germany. At the age of 19 he moved away from his parents to pursue an apprenticeship with a doctor in Cologne. After several years learning medicine, his mentor allowed him to work beside him at the small hospital in the town. He quickly became one of the best doctors around, and was regarded highly in the community. But when Malleus was 52 years old, long after his mentor had passed on, he grew tired of the ordinary medical practices and began to experiment with new ideas. One of his projects lead to his discovery of a way to bring the deceased back to life. The people of the town were appalled by such abominations. They demanded that he stop, and when he refused, they lynched him.

A New Life

Centuries later, in 2007, a young scientist purchased Malleus Formicarius's notes on resurrection from a popular online shopping website and traveled to the alleged gravesite of the old German doctor. After much effort, he excavated the corpse of Malleus, which was excellently preserved by the highley compressed soil. Using Malleus's own technique, the young scientist was able to bring the "good" doctor back to the land of the living. Malleus was still enraged from the event that lead to his death, and quickly turned on the scientist and began to strangle him. Malleus himself has stated that the murder of his "savior" still haunts him to this day, but he believes that it was unavoidable as his judgement was clouded by centuries decay.

After dumping the scientist's body in his old gravesite, Malleus started towards the town. He stopped at a lake on his way to quench his thirst, and was startled by his own appearance. He was disgusted by his gray, rotting flesh. He realized that he could not go into town looking like this, they would surely kill him again. So Malleus returned to the house in which he was resurrected, and searched for items that would allow him to pose as a normal citizen. He fashioned a cloak out of some old, faded drapes, and found some money that the scientist had left on the desk. Later that day he returned to the town once again. He could not help but feel like a stranger in his old town, there were so many foreign objects. What puzzled him the most was that even though it was almost night time, everything was so very bright, illuminated by strange devices. (to be continued...)
