Alexander Mikhailovich Rabinovich (Александр Михайловмч Рабинович), or Alex, is a Professor of Theoretical Physics in Paragon City University, a hero, and a mad scientist. He is one of the few sufferers of SRMD (Science Related Memetic Disorder) to remain on the good (or at least ignorant) side of the law, though he still often skirts that line. He specializes in Portal Theory, with a background in Nuclear Physics. He has also dabbled in robotics.

Biography

Alex was born in Semipalatinsk, USSR on February 26, 1967 to Mikhail Borisovich Rabinovich, a nuclear physicist, and Anma Abramovna Rabinovich, an industrial chemist. He spent his formative years in the city before traveling to Omsk to study nuclear physics in the footsteps of his father. It was at Omsk State University that he met Sofia Oskarovna Kagan, who he married in the year 1986 after receiving their degrees (he in nuclear physics, she in linguistics).

They moved to the city of Chernobyl when Alex received a prestigious internship at the nuclear plant, and were present for the nuclear meltdown on April 25. Alex received near lethal doses of radiation, putting him into the hospital radiology lab, where he was treated (poorly) for four years.

In 1992, with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Rabinoviches found themselves free to move about and emigrated to the United States to seek out better medical care. At the University of California, Sofia enrolled Alex for experimental testing (in response to prognoses that Alex was not to survive another year), which uncovered the fact that his survival for so long was due to his body mitochondria being stimulated to abnormal levels and his cells actually converting the absorbed radiation into chemical blocks of trapped energy. He was transferred to the care of Doctor Nicholas Simon, an expert in abnormal mutations in human DNA, in 1995, and the two became fast friends.

With the extra time on his hands, Alex found a greater interest in theoretical physics, and completed his doctorate at the University of California. Unable to teach due to his physical condition, he focused entirely on research, and developed several radiological devices, many of which have since been converted into weaponry.

Even though the radiation levels were being dealt with in a manner that was preventing further deterioration of his cells, Alex was growing increasingly ill. The mystery was solved when Alex accidentally destroyed his hospital room wall with a large blue energy blast, after which his condition seemed to improve. Dr. Simon quickly connected this event to a latent energokinetic aptitude, and discovered that the built up energy, while dangerous to Alex if stored for too long, could be released at will with much practice. Alex was put on a regular regimen to exercise his new powers, but he did not use them in anything but recreational capacity at first.

In 2002, when the Rikti invaded, all persons with superpowers were drafted or enlisted, and Alex, who had been showing remarkable recovery (so long as he kept using his medicines on time), was assigned to the US Army Meta-Ops team protecting the Greater Los Angeles Area, alongside Dr. Simon, who had powerful cryokinetic abilities. Shortly after Dr. Simon was killed by a Rikti assault team, Sofia discovered her own pyrokinetic powers, and joined Alex's side to fight the alien menace. It was at this time that Alex became interested in dimensional physics, and after the war was over, the two of them moved to Paragon City, where they registered as superheroes as well as joining the faculty of Paragon City University.
