Bright Lotus was created by Rose in Winter for use in RP in the City of Heroes game. Originally created to add some hitting power to the two players who played her brothers, she grew on her own after the other players deleted their ninjas. Her history is strange and uncertain, more like something from a legend than real life.

Personality

Bright Lotus is rather shy, in part because of her cultural background, in part because she feels insecure about her ability to speak English, and in part due to her nature. In addition to that, she feels that she does not really deserve to be at P.R.I.M.E and worries she will never fit in. Lotus is not exactly metahuman; she has simply trained hard all her life. P.R.I.M.E. accpeted her due more to her unusual background than for any inability to pass as a regular human. She has just entered P.R.I.M.E. as a sophomore, but still lives at home with her grandfather, mother, and two older brothers.

Character History

Hikari Megumi and her older brothers were born of a forbidden union between the eldest son of a samuri family and a beautiful kunoichi (female ninja). When Megumi was 13, her father's father discovered his son's secret marriage and ordered his son's wife and children put to death. Alerted by her husband, Megumi's mother Tomoko took the children and escaped to her home village. There, she spoke with her own father Hattori Menosuke, who was a powerful sorcerer. Knowing that the samurai Hikari family would not stop hunting his daughter and grandchildren, he transported them into the far future.

The family emerged from the past in the year 2005, in Kyoto, Japan. The Hikari children were enrolled in school, where they quickly learned modern Japanese customs, which they passed on to their mother and grandfather. The three also studied martial arts with Tomoko. Although she was ninja, she did not let them forget their samurai half, and ensured that they also trained with the katana in a local dojo. Megumi especially excelled in these lessons, but found that she preferred unarmed martial arts. The three also learned some magic from their sorcerer grandfather; the two boys developing magical skills that outstripped their skill with martial arts or arms. Megumi's own magical gifts were limited; the only skill she mastered was that of flight. The family settled into the rhythms of Japanese life. They thought they were safe from retribution.

They were wrong.

When no trace of the family could be found in the land, her father's family hired another sorcerer. This sorcerer disovered where the family was -- in the far future. The second son of the family, Megumi's uncle, offered to follow them into the future and put them to death. The sorcerer sent Hikari Daisuke into the future as well, with the order to destroy them and regain the honor of his family. He chose to travel to the year 2006, giving the family time to feel safe, planning to use surprise as his ally.

His first attack was unsuccessful; while her brothers and grandfather prepared another spell, Megumi and her mother fought off Daisuke. The family was able to escape again. This second spell moved them not in time but in space; they were transplanted to Paragon City, Rhode Island, in the United States. The children spent the summer studying English, and were enrolled as ESL students in the local Public School. Kageyoshi and Date learned English quickly, but Megumi found it much more of a challenge. She became more and more withdrawn; she only appeared happy during her continuing Martial Arts lessons. While her brothers made friends easily, Megumi's trouble with the language prevented her from doing the same.

It was during that time that the name Bright Lotus was first heard. The young hero attained security level 20 rapidly, facing villains fearlessly and completing assignments with timeliness and competence. In her role as Bright Lotus, Megumi found happiness. She appears sometimes dressed as a Samuri and sometimes as a kunoichi, respecting both traditions as her mother has taught her.

This new occupation of her daughter's worried Tomoko, of course, but she was more worried about her daughter's inability to master English, which she and her father learned from her sons, and to make friends. She saw that the thing that made her daughter the happiest was being a hero -- but her grades were suffering. Tomoko began searching for another option for her youngest child and in the process heard of P.R.I.M.E. At first, school officials were skeptical, as she could not claim her daughter was metahuman; however when, with reluctance, she revealed the family's history and her concerns for her daughter, she was told, "She'll fit in just fine." Bright Lotus, aka Hikari Megumi, applied and was accepted at P.R.I.M.E., her entrance scheduled for Fall, 2007. Her mother has institued a new rule, however -- Megumi may only be Bright Lotus as long as her grades stay high!

Again, things seem to have settled down for the misplaced family. Hattori Menosuke and Hikari Tomoko have applied for American citizenship. The children have adopted American clothing and many American customs. All family members still speak with a lilting accent, the adults' and Megumi's more pronounced than the two boys, but they are content with their slow integration into American society. Yet they are not as safe as they hope. Hikari Daisuke, humilated after his defeat at the hands of the two women, traced the family to their new home. They are unaware that in the Rogue Isles, Hikari Daisuke plots against the family, gathering allies of his own, that he may become victorious in battle and fulfill his father's command.

Trivia

As a child, Bright Lotus's father often called her "Hana," which means "flower" or "blossom." She has many memories of Nippon, of her father and of morning sunlight on the beautiful lotus blossoms outside her home. She often uses these nostaligic references to a pleasant time in her life to cheer herself up, and drew her hero name from them.

Weaknesses and Limitations

A burning desire to defeat Hikari Daisuke and send him back to the past.

Strict rules imposed by her mother (grades staying high, curfew, schoolwork first).

Limited skill with English.

Hobbies

Bright Lotus composes haiku, although she never shares them with anyone outside her family.

Bright Lotus studies the art of bonsai with her grandfather, an accomplished cultivator of the delicate plants.
