A Lich is a sentient, undead being, and was most likely a powerful spellcaster or necromancer in life. Liches are created when said magician seeks immortality through mystical means, and chooses to house their own soul in a powerful, magical object known as a phylactery. As long as the phylactery is in existence, the Lich cannot die, and his/her soul is returned to the phylactery temporarily as their body is reformed.
