Kalderash is the granddaughter of a Golden Age heroine, also named The Chovexani. |
Elena Kalderash is a graduate student in the music department at Paragon University. She is a proficient herbal healer, and formerly ran the Kalderash Apothecary with her grandmother, Sara Kalderash. Sara tragically passed while ministering to the wounds of heroes on the front lines of the Rikti War. Of late, Elena has worked as a secretary for M.A.G.I.
The Chovexani is a golden age mystic heroine, the Light of the Rom and protector of the Romani people. She was a prominent force in World War II, and the first hero of Romani heritage to attain Omega Clearance. She retired from heroism in the 1980s and vanished completely from the public eye. In 2005, she seemingly reappeared in Paragon City.
A Light in the Darkness
The Chovexani (Romani, 'witch') was a prominent mystical heroine during World War II, mysterious as she was powerful. Rising to defend her people during Porrajmos ('The Devouring', aka the Holocaust), she lent her significant mystical skills to the Allied forces. After the war she remained a frequent aid to various heroes in America, and was well-respected in the magical community for her extensive talents at elemental magic and herbal healing. She disappeared entirely from the public eye in the early 80s, and was never seen again.
Sara Kalderash, a Romani-American woman who had emigrated from Spain in the 1940s, and the mystic known to the world as the Chovexani, retired in 1985 after the death of her daughter Maria and son-in-law Django at the hands of the Fifth Column, who had discovered her real name. She never revealed her true identity to the public. Taking their infant daughter Elena into her own care, Sara raised her to be conscious of her heritage while making allowances for the modern world; she did not want her daughter to be entirely lost in old tradition and unable to succeed in America. She trained the girl in the magical traditions of the Romano Drom ('the Way of the Rom'), though not extensively, and encouraged Elena's interest in the music and dance of her people.
The Candle is Snuffed
Elena Kalderash grew into a beautiful and intelligent young woman, and while her interest in the magic of her people was strong, she never truly possessed the skill required to wield it. She was content as a youth to help her grandmother in running an herbal medicine shop in New York City. All was tranquil in their lives until the Rikti War began.
Sara was delivering medicines to heroes on the front lines, when she was struck and killed by an alien blast meant for someone far more capable of shrugging it off. She was buried with distinction as an honorary war hero, though no one knew that she had been the Chovexani. Elena was remanded to the custody of her aunt Janna for the remainder of her high school education.
Janna was a strict but loving caretaker, and encouraged her niece to pursue her interest in the Romani culture. Elena secured a scholarship to the Conservatory of Music at Paragon University. She had been keeping secrets from her aunt, however; secrets which would soon change her path.
The Light Restored
Upon the death of Sara Kalderash, Elena was suddenly imbued with the magical aptitude her grandmother had borne. In secret, she had spent years with Sara's old grimoires and spellbooks, learning the ways of Romano Drom and how to wield it effectively.
Elena became an intern at M.A.G.I. during her senior year at Paragon University, and it is no coincidence that a woman resembling the original Chovexani and wearing her costume has appeared in Paragon City. Many believe her to be the old witch returned, still youthful and still a beacon of glory for her people. Others believe the recent sightings indicate that a new sorceress has taken up the mantle. Whatever the truth may be... the Champion of Sara-la-Kali has returned.
