Personality

Descriptions of Bayne Banzai are rare, but Reno recalls his first meeting with him as follows: "I have always found it remarkable how a confident and open person can make a strong lasting impression in the space of a single moment, but that was just what I found to be the case with Bayne Banzai. A ready smile and a firm handshake attached to a body that seemed to be made entirely of sinew captivated me immediately. I suggested that we walk outside, and he agreed."

"In the sunshine his face is smooth, unmarked. A smile plays constantly around his lips, but his eyes are deep and thoughtful, of an unusual color I cannot readily describe. Neither can I recall who spoke first, a phenomenon I have found common among others when they have been asked to recall their first encounters with the man. I tend to believe it is the eyes, of such an unusual hue and hypnotic intensity that they could make one believe almost anything. In short, within the first minute of our meeting I believe I had decided to follow him anywhere with the slightest hesitation."

Later in his book, still recalling that first meeting when he was inducted into the Cavaliers, Reno adds this observation: "Bayne, like most true geniuses, was utterly without arrogance, a simple man in the best sense of the word. Decency towards others was not something he had to work at; it was as involuntary with him as breathing. On the other hand, I have seen him an hour after killing a man in self defense and found him to be perfectly composed." The contradiction, Reno concludes, is apparent only to the Western mind.

Precious light is shed on the mystery of the man's personality by the following laconic note, which is apparently the only time Dr. Banzai has discussed himself in print:

"It was quite by chance that I became involved in scientific investigation and began to study the psychology of crime. Although I was born in London during a visit of my parents to England, I spent my early days on the vast regions of Washington and there was taught how to ride and fight by the Asian and Native American warriors, who strangely seemed to enjoy showing an Amerasian boy their tricks. Until I was fourteen I went to school in Seattle and later I continued my education in Massachusetts, and England, taking my medical degree from Harvard. In this way a love of travel and the craving for excitement and danger were stimulated in me from childhood."

"After my first introduction in Monte Carlo to the forces which wage unceasing warfare against the shadowy underworld of crime, I realized that in their ranks was a possibility of escaping from the dreaded monotony of a life of routine."

Powers

Coronae exhibits powers that point to a symbiotic union of human and a Kheldian sentient energy being. His powers follow the Kheldian Peacebringer template. This includes Luminous Blast and Luminous Aura powers.

Skills

The human side of Coronae is a world class physician and bio-engineering research scientist. He has designed and driven high-powered automobiles and aircraft. He studied bujitsu since his youth. He also has several patents in the field of particle physics. He speaks a dozen languages and has written songs in all of them. He also is a skilled musician and is able to play 14 different instruments.

Character History

Bayne Banzai was born in the winter of 1969 in London, the son of two scientists: Masado Banzai, a brilliant Japanese research physicist whose work in theoretical quantum mechanics is reported to have "rattled" Einstein, and Sandra Willoughby, the daughter of the eccentric Scottish-born Texas mathematician Edward McKay Willoughby. Sandra Willoughby fell in love with Masado Banzai when she was sixteen and married him twelve years later, after becoming an expert in her own right in the field of negative mass propulsion. The couple eventually settled in Washington State.

In 1971 Masado Banzai and Sandra Willoughby joined forces with Masado's old friend and colleague, Professor Toichi Hikita, who shared their belief that one day man would be able to pass unharmed through solid matter. Their researches culminated in 1975 in the Texas desert, when Dr. Banzai took controls of a jet car equipped with an early version of the Oscillation Overthruster. But the experiment ended tragically: Bayne Banzai's parents were killed in an explosion as the six-year-old child looked on. Hikita raised young Bayne, using the entire world as his classroom, and the boy grew up to be, among other things, an extraordinarily skilled neurosurgeon.

Dissatisfied with a life devoted exclusively to medicine Bayne Banzai perfected a wide range of skills. He designed and drove high-powered automobiles and aircraft. He studied bujitsu and particle physics. He speaks a dozen languages and has written songs in all of them. His band, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, was one of the most popular, hard-rocking bar bands in the Seattle area, though it's members were not professional musicians at all but rather cartographers and botanists, linguists and propellant engineers, an entomologist and an epidemiologist. All of these experts in the oddest fields of endeavor were drawn to Bayne, and all of them come and go like the wind on the prairie - Rawhide, Reno, the Swede, Perfect Tommy, Big Norse, Pecos.

In 1998 Dr. Bayne Banzai recreated the ill-fated experiment begun by his parents years before. Using a jet-car he designed by utilizing the lifelong work of Prof. Hikita, Bayne Banzai successfully navigated the eighth dimension by piloting his jet car through a California mountainside.

These pioneering experiments demonstrate that the eighth dimension may be breached by occupying the "empty" space that is normally shared with "solid" matter. Dr. Bayne Banzai explained to the press following his demonstration in California, travel through matter is possible because matter is actually comprised mostly of empty space. Subatomic particles take up only one quadrillionth of an atom's total volume -- "like a bee in the middle of St. Peter's Cathedral," Dr. Sinclair notes. Sinclair elaborates: "According to quantum field theory... the forces between particles are created by exchanges of other particles. The electromagnetic force is carried by the exchange of particles called 'virtual photons.' In other words, the empty space between the electrons and protons in normal matter is full of virtual protons. Furthermore, if virtual photons fail to travel all the way between electrons and the nucleus, atoms would no longer be prevented from passing through each other. Since virtual photons have no mass, they are able to travel the full distance between electrons and protons. If virtual photons had mass, they would be restricted to a very small region around the elementary particles that make up the atoms. The passage would be clear for Bayne Banzai and his Jet Car to pass through matter."

This unprecedented experiment was accomplished by the oscillation overthruster, a device created by Prof. Hikita and perfected by Dr. Banzai. The overthruster seems to be, in effect, a miniaturized particle accelerator, powering two colliding beams that mix electrons and positrons together, releasing energy as they annihilate each other in a continuous series of powerful subatomic explosions -- a "Baby Bang," as Dr. Molly Mounds of the Banzai Institute called it. One by-product of this "Baby Bang" is the creation of intermediate vector bosons, which are then magnetically directed to temporarily impart mass to whatever virtual photons occupy the designated target area. Within that target, electromagnetic force is suddenly and severely reduced. The effect is extremely short-lived (on the order of seconds or less), but within that window of opportunity a fast-moving object -- Bayne's jet car, for example -- is able to move through the disruption, effectively passing through solid matter.

Upon emerging from the far side of the Californian mountainside Bayne Banzai remarked "I've been ionized, but I'm okay now." That ionization was actually something far more involved than anyone realized. During his short time in eighth he had discovered the existance of sentient energy beings called the Kheldian.

The ionization that Bayne Banzai described was actually the results of a fusion between himself and one of the sentient energy beings who is believed to have been researching the eighth dimension itself.

It was after the dimensional travel that Dr. Bayne Banzai discovered that a fusion had occurred between the Kheldian and himself while in the eighth dimension. It seems that through extensive meditation he managed to communicate with the entity that now inhabits his body.

It is believed that Dr. Banzai realizing the threat that the Nictus posed upon the Earth so he chose to utilize the powers of his Peacebringer Kheldian symbiote to extend his crime fighting adventures into the realm of the superhero.

Dr. Bayne Banzai uses the crimefighting name Coronae to honor the dual nature of his existance and the aura of energy that is produced when he uses his new found powers.

In 2005 Dr. Bayne Banzai shifted his attention to Paragon City. His Kheldian Peacebringer half apparently sensed the influx of Nictus energies into the Rhode Island metropolis.
