Coming of the Final Night

For one to be able to understand the being known as Denique Nox one would need to know where that being came from. To do this we have to look at the two people that merged to become Denique Nox. The Nictus, Darkstar, and the human, Amelia Jacobs.

A Dark Star Rises

Millenia ago a creature came into existance in the depths of space. True to it's kind this Nictus had no qualms about taking control of the lesser species, using their bodies as it saw fit then casting them off when it was done, leaving a broken husk behind, only to repeat this attrocity on another hapless victim. Displaying a casual cruelty and cold indifference to others, even it's own kind, this Nictus became known as Darkstar. Always searching for new and better species to use as hosts, Darkstar traveled ever further into the depths of space, conquering planets and informing the other Nictus of new places to aquire suitable slaves, until it reached the outer rim of the galaxy and happened upon a small star orbited by a planet inhabited by a simple and relatively primitive race, Earth. Finding humans pleasing to it's senses and relatively easy to control, Darkstar settled in what is now known as Eastern Europe and gathered a herd of humans that worshiped it as a god, living in idle luxury and taking it's hosts from among it's flock, discarding each in turn whenever another was born among it's followers that Darkstar preferred. This practice continued for centuries, even through the inquisitions, lasting almost to the modern day and might have even continued if it hadn't been for two things. With the modernization of man and the subsequent decline in spirituality it became more and more difficult to hold onto Darkstar's followers and.. the Nictus grew bored. It was no longer enough for Darkstar to simply wallow in mindless hedonism as it had for so many years. It wanted more. It wanted others that it could associate with that would, if not understand it, at least appreciate it's experiences and be able to do more than bow and scrape at it's every whim. Darkstar wanted equals. Fortunately it had heard rumors of others that had abilities similar to it's own and traveled to Germany, following these rumors in search of other Nictus, where it encountered an odd human calling himself Requim who introduced it to the 5th Remanent and it's bretheren who remembered the name Darkstar and welcomed it into their midst. Here Darkstar stayed, sharing the knowledge and experiences it had accumulated throughout it's travels and might still remain if it hadn't been for the second world war. Shocked at the sheer breadth and scope of the mindless brutality and pointless genocide of an entire group of humans for no true discernable reason forced Darkstar to look back upon it's own actions throughout the millenia. Finding little difference between itself and those it now looked upon with disgust, the Nictus decided to take it's leave only to discover there was a complication with this decision. Darkstar had proven itself an asset to both the Nictus and the 5th Remanent, one that they were willing to use force to hold onto. Feinging compliance, Darkstar simply waited for them to grow lax in their security and then slipped away into the night, waging a shadow war against those it once called allies that continued until this very day, taking the very people Darkstar fought as hosts and following them to America where their battle continued to be waged behind the scenes.

Just a Girl

While having a much less grandiose beginning, knowing about Amelia Jacobs, the human half of the Warshade, is no less important in attempting to understand Delique Nox. Born in Seattle, Washington, Amelia Jacobs was orginally Amelia Walthers, and less than a year ago would have laughed in someone's face if told that she would wield power that some can't even comprehend, let alone rival. Unlike some of those that can be seen wandering Paragon City or the Etoile Islands, Amelia was not born to a family of mutants, her parents weren't genius inventors, nor were they rich and famous, dedicated practitioners of some exotic martial art, brilliant military strategists, or wise and powerful wielders of magic. Amelia's mother, Carol Martinez, was a dancer at a nearby gentleman's club and her father, Jeff Walthers, was a struggling musician in a failing local band and it wasn't until years later that she finally understood that the sometimes erratic behavior they displayed was due to heavy drug abuse and that it was that very same reason that, when she was five years old, her father drew a gun while they were walking back home from one of his performances and explained to her and her mother that he had to kill them both or the world would end then shot and killed Carol before leveling the gun on his daughter, drawing the hammer back just as she saw a tightly formed series of bullets exit his chest, fired by a police officer who decided it would be better to save the girl from the same fate as her mother than try to arrest her father. For the next seven years Amelia went through a series of foster homes, some kind and nurturing, others cruel and abusive. The constant moving and loss of friends, compunded by the fact that some children would tease her for her druggie dad killing her druggie, stripper mom when they found out why she was an orphan, caused Amelia to grow ever more jaded and withdrawn until she finally turned towards drugs to escape from the realities of her life, potentially traveling down the same self destructive path her birth parents had traveled, and that would have been the end of it had she not been taken in by the Jacobs. Rebecca and Michael were unable to have children of their own and were overjoyed to have Amelia living with them, showering the troubled girl with affection and never seeming to mind that she never really returned these feelings towards them. Less than a year later the Jacobs brought a younger girl, Sandra, home to live with them. Having gone through this before, Amelia assumed she would soon be on her way out and not wanting to have to start all over again decided to simply run away and try to live on her own. It didn't take long for her to realize this was a mistake with no money to buy food or put a roof over her head and simply wandered the city, sleeping anywhere that seemed safe. Not even a week later she was sitting at a bus stop when a car came screeching to a halt in front of her and her foster mother climbed out, running over to her and insisting that she come back home. The two talked on the way back home during which Amelia explained why she left and as soon as they got there the Jacobs made the phone calls necessary to begin the adoption process. As soon as things were finalized the Jacobs moved from Seattle to Paragon with both children in tow in an attempt to give them a new beginning. Years passed, the children grew, and while Amelia never did come completely out of her shell and occasionally came home late with eyes that were a little too glassy, an odd odor about her, or behavior that seemed out of the ordinary, she was finally home.

The Beginning of Endings, the End of Beginnings, and a Bargain

After Amelia finished high school she found herself associating with what would be considered the misfits of society, drug users and dealers, graffiti artists, music and software pirates, and others of that sort. None of them people that would actively harm others, but most considered criminals by societies standards. She began using drugs once more and became a regular at many of the local raves and underground parties. After one rave she found herself in a deserted alley, spray painting on a wall while waiting to sober up enough to go home and face her parents, never considering that a Nictus might come running down that alley in an attempt to escape the Freakshow armed with quantum weapons that were being paid to kill it when in fact that was exactly what was about to happen. Amelia turned towards the sounds of running just as Darkstar rounded the corner and ran straight into her, sending them both tumbling to the ground. The two stood up, Amelia trying to gather together her spray cans while Darkstar yelled at the innebriated girl to just run, when the Freakshow rounded the corner and leveled their weapons, opening fire on both human and Nictus. After the flashes of light dimmed down and the smoke cleared the Freakshow examined their handiwork, concluding that if either the Nictus or the potential witness was still alive it wouldn't be for long and left to collect their pay. Darkstar lay there in agony and waited for them to leave before rolling over to check on Amelia, silently agreeing with the Freakshow's assesment. It was then that the Nictus realized the dilemma it was in. It was dying, of that there was on doubt. It's host had been too thoroughly damaged to even pretend otherwise. Adding insult to injury was the fact that it had brought about the death of someone who's only crime was being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Complicating the matter even further was that the only place for the Nictus to go to escape it's own demise was the girl who was dying on the ground next to it and it found itself unwilling to simply take an innocent so it could preserve it's own life as it had done so many times in the past. Not seeing any other choice, Darkstar spoke to Amelia. The Nictus told the human that it knew of a way to save her life, but that she would cease to be what she was now. That while she would still live and retain all her own memories there would be new memories as well and that she would have new abilities. Amelia lay on the hot asphalt and stared at the sky as her body grew cold. She tried to listen through the pain and the drug induced haze, but only really understood two things. She was dying. Someone was there that could save her life if she agreed to something. She agreed.
