Character History
Kate Tanner was a normal teenaged girl (how original...) who one day had an accident in a science lab (really original!) and gained super powers as a result (Ding ding ding! No one's EVER thought of THAT before!)!
Kate kept her powers a secret at first, as she actually didn't have much interest in heroics. However, the guy she had a crush on, Ricky, had a pretty significant fascination with the heroes of Paragon (particularly the female ones), so she hatched a plan to get his attention: She'd become a hero, make sure he became a fan of hers, then reveal her secret identity to him and she'd sweep him off his feet and she'd be irresistible and he would be hers 4-EVAR!
Going by the name "Tough Love" and adopting a uniform similar to Statseman's, Kate went out to start busting crime. But she felt her progress was too slow... she wasn't going to impress anyone, let alone Ricky, just by beating up purse-snatchers. She misconstrued her invulnerability for invincibility, and decided to go after the big man himself: Lord Recluse. The only problem was getting to the Rouge Isles: it's not like she could just take a train.
Kate's chance came when Arachnos raided Talos island to cause Mayhem as cover for one of Recluse's "Destined Ones" as they robbed the bank. A trio of Arachnos Drop Ships came loaded with troops to clash with Heroes in the streets, and it was then Kate saw her chance. She made her way past the containment field and jumped up onto one of the Drops ships as it prepared to retreat. So far, her plan was going great!
Well, until she got to Grandville. She was instantly found out and captured, her powers being useless against the more powerful and experienced Villains. Lord Recluse, amused when Kate declared she was there to defeat him, beat her to a pulp, but allowed her to live. He had her chained up and tossed out to sea, with Ice Minstrel providing a makeshift "raft". If she made it back to Paragon, good for her, if not... well, then her death could only be blamed on Nature.
Kate didn't make it to Paragon, but only because she was found by a Longbow carrier along the way. Not having a proper hero ID or Security level, she was held for questioning for several days before they believed her story and allowed her to go home. Embarrassed and withdrawn, Kate's depression turned to anger when Ricky started making fun of "Tough Love"s failed coup (not knowing it was Kate), which was all over the news. Kate questioned how Ricky could so cruelly mock a hero when he supposedly loved them all, to which he replied something along the lines of just wanting to have sex with the female ones, "...except for that Tough Love ditz, she looks kinda flat."
That was the last straw. After a short bout of being utterly depressed, Kate officially registered with DATA, and keeping her torn up costume and chains as a reminder of her failure, took the name "Disgruntled Ex" so that she could be the best Hero she could. She'd make all the doubters and haters eat their words, and Recluse would eat her fists...
...When she's actually ready, of course.
Current events
Kate eventually met up with and befriended a rag-tag group of heroes who's members include Patty-Sue Ivanova, Pynx, Balaka, and others. She helps them on occasion, but usually just teams up with anyone who needs her help.
As a Hero, she was also given the opportunity to enroll in Paragon University's advanced Hero curriculum program, an opportunity she literally jumped at immediately. She's not 100% sure what she wants to do as a "normal" occupation when she grows up, though she's given some thought to teaching.
Disgruntled Ex also recently joined the Vanguard, though she has yet to make much of an impact.
Personality
Despite her name, Disgruntled Ex is actually rather chipper. Having gotten over her defeat and simply thankful to be alive, she revels in being useful to teammates and the small tokens of thanks she gets from citizens she rescues from thugs. She tries to see the bright side of things, and always makes sure to learn from any mistakes made, whether it be hers or someone else's. And while Tanks are stereotypically supposed to take the lead into combat situations, oftentimes charging ahead before anyone's ready, Ex tends to hesitate and wait to make sure the team is with her. Though she does have a penchant for whining when the chips are down...
Powers
Disgruntled Ex has a wide array of Invulnerability powers, coupled with the ability to hit foes with bursts of energy. She can also leap high and far. As a "Tanker", and having a big mouth, she has the ability to enrage foes to confront her, instead of running away or fighting any of her friends. But that's pretty standard fare for a Tank.
