History

Nicholas Caine was a soldier in the Great War. Upon its conclusion, he found himself directionless and something of a drifter. Finding himself in New York, he dropped in to visit his uncle Theodore, an archeologist with Museum of Natural History. There he met Gianna de Rossi, an Italian exchange archeologist working with his Uncle. He was smitten instantly.

For the next several months, Nick traveled with his uncle and his team as security and muscle. They traveled the globe as a team and during their adventures Gianna and Nick fell in love and married. They were expecting their first child while traveling in southern Europe.

During this expedition, Theo and Gianna discovered the Helm of Pluto, an artifact believed to be a rumor. During the night, their camp was overrun by thieves seeking the artifact. Nick fought them off to the best of his ability saving the Helm, but the scientific team was slain. Overcome with grief and covered in blood, Caine lashed out at the artifact which began to glow with an eerie green light.

Nick saw a vision of the Roman God Pluto who explained that a time was approaching that would blur the lines between life and death, and as protector of the Underworld, he could not allow that to stand. Impressed with his skills as a warrior, Pluto offered the lives of Caine’s wife and unborn child in exchange for his service as his champion. Caine readily agreed, and per Pluto’s instructions placed the helm upon his head.

Caine was taken to Hades where Pluto trained him in the use of the mystical Helm, and granted his champion use of two additional magical items: Charon’s Aureus, a medallion that controls the power of the dark river Styx and the Cloak of Janus, a robe allowing him or his companions to open doorways through reality. Caine was a willing student and time passed quickly – or so he thought.

When Caine was returned to Earth, it was 2007. What seemed mere months in Hades had actually been nearly 80 years!

Caine, taking the name Dr. Quietus, served exclusively as Pluto's avatar for a number of months, but through his battles began noticing the disruptions to what he has come to call "The Gate" - the barriers that separate our plane of existence from all others. To combat the multiple threats to the Gate, Dr. Quietus began to assemble a group of magically-attuned heroes whom have come to be known as the Guardians of the Gate.

Now, either with his allies or alone, Dr. Quietus battles those who elude the natural cycle of death, while Nick Caine tries to reassemble his life and track down a family he’s never met.

Affiliations

Dr. Quietus is the founder and current Archmage of the Guardians of the Gate, a mystical supergroup operating out of the Tower of Shadows in the Dark Astoria section of Paragon City.

Personality

While wearing the Helm of Pluto, Caine becomes detached and somewhat aloof. It is unknown if this is a direct relation to the power of the helmet, or if it is merely an affectation Caine puts on while fulfilling his duties as Pluto's avatar.

Powers

Without the three gifts of Pluto (See Equipment) Nick Caine has only minor supernatural abilities - levitation and slightly increased strength and stamina. He is, however, an extremely capable man and with his arcane studies and being magical attuned, his mystical abilities may increase in time without his patron's gifts.

Abilities

Using the gifts of his patron Lord Pluto, Dr. Quietus displays a number of arcane abilities including the mastery of dark energies and a magical form of radiation. Additionally, Dr. Quietus is able to warp space-time to teleport himself and his allies. Dr. Quietus is able to project an astral form with which he is able to channel his mystical abilities through. Without the artifact, Caine is a capable hand to hand fighter and student of the arcane. Given the vast library within the Tower of Shadows Caine's mystical abilities are limited only by the time and attention he pays to his studies.

Equipment

As Dr. Quietus, Caine carries three primary mystical artifacts, each a gift from his patron Pluto.

Helm of Pluto

This golden helmet was worn by the Roman God Pluto during the deity wars with the original Titans. Imbued with a fraction of Pluto’s godly might, the Helm allows Dr. Quietus to cast a number of offensive spells. Effects of the Helm result in symptoms similar to Plutonium exposure. The Helm also grants Quietus with premonitions and communication with his Patron.

Charon's Aureus

A golden coin worn around Quietus’ neck provides him with the ability to call forth fragments of the river Styx and its muddy, obsidian banks.

Robe of Janus

As a favor to Pluto, the God of Doorways, Janus, crafted the robe of Dr. Quietus allowing him the ability to open portals on the mortal plane. Quietus can use these portals to traverse distances or pull allies near him.
