Dreamwalker

The invariable mark of a dream is to see it come true.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

When we dream, we enter a private world of sound, images, and sometimes even emotion. Sometimes these images leave us feeling pleasant upon waking. Other times, our dreams are nightmares and we wake in a cold sweat, cursing the images that linger within our minds. Are our dreams really as private as we would like them to be? Or can others with special gifts witness our most intimate personal imagery?

For all her life, Maya Jensen walked amidst a web of dreams from the moment she closed her eyes to the second she awoke. She danced through the mental netting interconnecting each and every living creature that dreams. Never intrusive, she would simply watch in silence. She would analyse, enjoy, or fear the elemental thoughts in the psyche of men and women she did not even know.

Remaining unknown to the people whose dreams she frequents, she has no bias towards them. She does not know them in the waking world, nor they her. She prefers to remain in the distance as an afterthought. She is often forgotten more quickly than the actual dream. In times the dreamer takes control of his or her own vision, she avoids contact, vanishing when approached and questioned.

Deja Vu

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time.
I think I’ve forgotten this before
- Steven Wright

Maya's presence in dreams can be disorienting for a person who sees her in the waking world. Often times, she will meet people from their dreams, and she will get an odd look. "Don't I know you from somewhere?", they would ask. She would simply shake her head. "It must be a coincidence. I have a memorable face."

It is not uncommon that someone whose dreams she may inadvertently frequent may experience strong feelings of deja vu if they came into contact, or may even recognise her if the dream is particularly memorable. This is not a choice for Maya. She simply skips between minds as the night goes by. It is the blessing and curse of being unable to dream her own dreams while others are around.

Career

Dreamscapes-work2.jpg
The conscious mind may be compared to a fountain playing in the sun
and falling back into the great subterranean pool of subconscious
from which it rises.
- Sigmund Freud

Her proximity to the unconscious mind and exposure to the dreams of millions of people has given Maya a unique insight to the human psyche. She focused her studies as a teenager and young adult to the science of psychology. She interned with many reputable San Francisco doctors, completed school, and moved to Paragon City to open her own practice.

The rumours of a city filled with horrors showed promise of many thousands of people having horrific dreams. She wanted to do something to help these people whose nightmares ruined their lives.

Maya, in conjunction with her private psychiatric and dream analysis practice, works closely with the Paragon Police Department. They employ her to slip through the minds of the sleeping for clues and hints of misdeeds: unconscious admissions of guilt, buried witnesses to terrible crimes. An excellent memory, paired with full control of her own recollection of the dreams she walks through, gives Maya the ability to consult a sketch artist and offer identities as possible leads.

Finally, because her specialty is the analysis of dreams, she often accepts clients whose dreams have been troubling, and encourages them to sleep in her office while she watches in silence. It is often after witnessing their dreams that she can help them find the underlying problem which bothers them.

Psyche

Dreamscapes-avatar1.jpg
Perception is a clash of mind and eye,
the eye believing what it sees,
the mind seeing what it believes.
- Robert Brault

The exposure to unspeakable nightmares and traumatised psyches has hardened Maya. She is not easily rattled by much. Her main abilities do not lie only in the unconscious world, and she can, if needed, peer into the mind of her assailant to retrieve his or her most terrifying subconscious image. She is nothing but professional during working hours, preferring to be polite, friendly, and pleasant.

In the off hours, she tends to relax. She does not know many people, as she is still new to the city, but is not against meeting strangers and making many acquaintances.

her psychic powers are kept mostly in check. She does not intrude where she is not welcome, but she often picks up on the emotions of people around her. Her empathic nature prohibits her from ignoring someone in distress, but despite her own inner objections, if the person who is upset does not wish to be helped, she does not force.

Trivia

  • Maya has always been psychic. It is not a mutation. It is an ability she has always inherently had.
  • Maya is something of an illusionist. She learned at a very young age that she can manipulate the way a person perceives her. She can make them believe that her appearance is different than it really is, or she can even appear completely invisible to them.
  • Maya can confuse an assailant into believing she is one of their cohorts. She often uses this trick to pass through gang territory or other hostile areas of the city.
  • When seriously threatened, Maya can rip images from a person's subconscious and manifest those images into seemingly coherent images: friendly images from one dream, or demons from a nightmare.
  • With enough focus, Maya can put a person to sleep. She often does this to read their dreams.
  • Enough exposure to a person's psyche will almost energise Maya. It is this positive disposition which seems to rub off on the people around her. She has a way of making others feel revitalised when she, herself, is positive and lighthearted.
  • Maya's favourite colour is blue and her favourite food is lasagna

Miscellaneous and OOC Notes

Amy Adams
  • Actress to play her: Amy Adams
  • Songs (still looking. Will post when I hear something appropriate)
  • No ERP please. I know that the idea of a woman who can be anyone you want is really alluring, but it's just not my bag.
  • This character isn't an idiot. She won't fall for your super bad boy villain who thinks he's super suave. It's not easy to fool a psychic - even a non-intrusive psychic.
