Echo Foxtrot was a young mutant whose powers largely precluded an ordinary life. A series of unfortunate events led him to the base of Foxtrot Company, where he has been living ever since. Under the care of Foxtrot, he managed to overcome some of the limitations of his condition. Then it was discovered that almost everything anyone knew about Echo Foxtrot was wrong...

Affiliations

Echo Foxtrot is one of the Twenty-Five core members of Foxtrot Company. As a natural stealth expert, he tends to take his marching orders from Foxtrot Romeo, but he is also likely to go and do his own thing at a moment's notice. He once kept the hero Haley Somerset pacified during the period of her unfortunate living demise by playing board games with her, and they have since met occasionally in Pocket D.

While Echo likes being part of Foxtrot Company, and generally gets along with the other members, he doesn't really trust them. He knows too much about them to feel truly safe around them - especially Foxtrot Charly, whose lies regarding her identity he accepted only because the girl whose identity she assumed was not killed.

Personality

Owing to Echo's unusual powers and bizarre origin, it is hard to say whether Echo really has a personality at all. He acts like your average 12-year-old kid most of the time, but this can change quite rapidly with his environment and situation. He is reckless, irresponsible, and immature - in other words, normal. He is, however, unusually cynical for a boy his age, owing perhaps to his lonely upbringing and the many things he has seen before he should have.

Powers

Echopraxia

Echo Foxtrot the mutant was a natural mimic, and can instantly reproduce with perfect fidelity any movement of the human body. This trait was copied by the replicant who now uses his name. For most of his life, he had only limited control of this ability, and spoke in repeated fragments of others' speech. In combat, Echo uses his abilities to anticipate his opponents' movements and slip around them while landing maximally-efficient strikes on weak points.

Perception Alteration

Something about the way Echo moves interacts with human perception in strange ways. Unless he deliberately announces his presence, he will never be noticed - he has taken to carrying a tennis ball which he bounces on the ground to keep people aware of him. He is also capable of moving from one place to another without anyone noticing the intervening motion, making it appear as if he can teleport. Cameras and other sensing systems which do not function like organic sight can sense him normally, however.

Abilities

Wuxia

Everything Echo knows about fighting, he learned by watching bad kung fu movies. It seems that his powers allow him to imitate even moves that shouldn't be possible at all without the assistance of wires and clever editing. After a marathon viewing session of a certain Japanese children's cartoon, he is also prone to announcing power levels in excess of nine thousand.

Equipment

Notebook

Echo keeps a battered spiral-bound notebook with him wherever he goes. He never lets anyone else handle it, but will occasionally tear out pages and give them to people. The full contents of the notebook are known only to him, but the pages have often contained hard-to-find information and closely guarded secrets.

Weaknesses and Limitations

Other than his aforementioned abilities, Echo is physically no stronger or tougher than an average 12 year old boy.

Character History

Echo's birth name and parents were not known to him. He didn't remember much of his earlier life, as most of it was spent in a dreamlike trance. It was assumed that when his powers manifested, he slipped away from his caretakers and somehow ended up in the Rogue Isles.

At one point Echo became involved in a Nemesis plot involving creating robot duplicates. When Echo found his own duplicate, he activated it out of curiosity. As it turns out, the duplicate is not actually evil at all - since it duplicated Echo perfectly, it took its cues from Echo. Other than occasionally blurting out "Hail Nemesis", and an unfortunate design flaw that causes it to burn off its outer coating when running at full power, it is entirely indistinguishable from Echo himself, at least as he was perceived to be.

As Echo gained more self-control and awareness, he came to discover something important. Although his eyes seemed blue to others, when photographed they appeared transparent - just like the eyes of his fellow soldier, Foxtrot Romeo. Further investigation revealed Romeo's link to the Gedankenmesser program, a Soviet project to create an army of psychically linked soldiers controlled by the mutant psychic savant Gedankenmesser Zero. Echo shared his information with Romeo, and together they determined that Echo must have been one of the last Gedankenmesser clones created before Romeo nearly destroyed Zero with a nuclear weapon. Somehow, Echo's mind had been warped into a shelter for a hidden personality, which had hidden inside him ever since. The only way to retrieve that personality would be to break open the layers of protection around it, in the process destroying Echo's surface personality.

After some consideration, Echo decided that he was not a fully human entity, and that therefore it would not be fair to keep the personality inside him imprisoned to allow his continued existence. With the assistance of Romeo and other members of Foxtrot Company, the personality was uncovered. It turned out to be a version of Gedankenmesser Zero, imperfectly stored in the moment when Zero believed she would die - a version that was only as old as the body it existed in. Calling herself Echo Null, this entirely different individual demanded that she be permitted to leave Foxtrot Company due to her traumatic memories of Romeo. Due to her psychic powers and the very real potential that she would grow up to be another Zero, she was placed in the care of Mercedes Danvers, aka Kusanagi, and her other adopted daughter Haley Danvers.

The name "Echo Foxtrot" is now carried by the Nemesis duplicate who, it is now understood, is a copy without an original. This version of Echo seems to have no objection to taking on his predecessor's role in the company - or indeed to much of anything. Whether the duplicate should, or indeed can be accepted as a Foxtrot member, is a question as yet unanswered.
