Noii Merfolk

  • ((Pronounced No-eye))

The Noii are a species of Merfolk that once inhabited the waters bordering the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, building their small kingdom utilizing elaborate tunnels and underwater caves. They were a highly intelligent and relatively pacifist culture, as mention and creation of weaponry deemed a rarity. Superstitious and mystical, the Noii were priests, mages, scholars and seers, born with a natural affinity to magic, and a strong relationship with their Gods to whom they prayed to retain the safety of their people.

They were capable 'shape-shifters', and acquired an ability to physically adapt to their surroundings. After the events of "The Great Migration" offset by negative circumstances kept secret to their people, the Noii have since been found within scattered civilizations across the Atlantic Ocean, mainly caves and passages located in the deeper depths. They no longer possess a kingdom of their own, and most have adapted to the cultures and beliefs of their individual locations in modern time. An estimated population of 65 reside in Atlantis, and have accepted and lived their way of life - the percentage of Atlantean-born Noii has increased very slightly over the last century.

Noii are born with smooth, hairless flesh and varying amounts of scales (depending on their location of birth) ranging from a variety of blues, and are subject to head and/or facial hair growth during adolescence, as well as the final adaptions of their surroundings (rendering some with scales, no scales, body hair, no hair, etc). Barely visible "gills" are typically located around the ankle region, although necessary adaption may place them elsewhere. Though they once shared a similar physiology with Merridian Merfolk, most fail to adapt as defined fin protrusions within certain atmospheres, among other traits. Their flesh is smooth to the touch within dry conditions or shallow water, though glands with release a slimy substance while first submerging, becoming dry and smooth again once settled. In other words, most can be described as appearing as "Blue Atlanteans".

Their eyes are always pale in pigment, and take up shades of purple, grey and green. Any body hair is always black, and this trait has not changed since their beginning. Like Merridians they are long-lived, their lifespan ranging from 1000-1100 years, though females typically live longer. They are amphibious, and are capable of resisting the cold temperatures and pressures of the deep, while their superior sense of sight is adapted to see clearly within dimly-lit atmospheres as well as deeming them capable of noting details from very far distances.
