BACKGROUND

Growing up in the Rogue Islands, Fenikusu has learned the harsh reality of the world, and so soon.

She had to watch herself as she was constantly bullied, teased, and harassed. She had few untrustworthy friends, and her parents didn't give her the time of day, if anything, she feared them the most.

By the fourth grade, her mother took her out of school. Feni was forced to do all the house work, and when she slacked, one of her mother's boy toys was there to teach her a 'lesson'. Her mother decided that Feni would never leave the house again.

By age fifteen, Fenikusu had been abused, overworked, and sexually mistreated for the last time. When her mother and boy toy when drunk asleep, she found a way of sneaking out of her home. She found her way down to the docks and slept in one of the abandoned boats.

In the morning, when she awoke, an older gentleman was standing over her. His deep voice cracked as he proclaimed, "This is no place for a young girl to sleep." Startled, Feni got up to run, but lost her footing and fell in the water. The man pulled her out of the water as she struggled to get away. "I don't want to hurt you, girl." He told her as he watched around the docks, "But being out here in plain sight might not be the best of ideas. Come with me, please?" Frightened and unsure of how to get away, Feni followed him to a small sail boat, the kind with the living quarters underneath. After they both were inside, he closed the door and turned towards Feni, "The name is Jacob." He sighed as he walked over to one of the seats, "You may make yourself at home." Fenikusu watched Jacob's every move and spoke silently, "Why so kind?" Jacob took a minutes breathe, "There are kind people out there, kid. I'm just one of them." He looked up at her, "And sadly I must tell you that this is the last time you follow a stranger into his home... I'm not going to hurt you, but the next person might." "Why do you live here on the docks?" "I'm hiding here. There are lots of people who would pay big bucks to see me dead, kid. But enough about me for now, how about the reason you are on the docks?" Fenikusu lowered her head and became silent and still. The old man, feeling her pain, spoke in a joking manner, "Heh, if I didn't invite you into my house, I would have mistaken you as an assassin." And Feni replied softly, "How I wouldn't mind being on, though."

Jacob sat up straight and spoke firmly, "What reasons do you have to say that?" Fenikusu paced the small floor space that there was, "People who can harm others with no reason should die. Parents who abuse their children, let them starve, and hide them away for most of their childhood shouldn't be locked away in some jail, they should be killed right where they stand. Your mother's boy toy shouldn't be allowed to lay his hands on you because you're defenseless," Feni paused and recollected herself, "I should continue... I must go. I am sorry. i must leave now."

Jacob stood up and blocked the only exit with his body, "You don't have to answer, but by listening to you, your tone, that happened to you, didn't it?" Jacob glanced down at Feni as her eyes started to water, "Like I said, you don't have to answer. But please, you need a good nights rest. Stay here for one night to gain your strength back." Feni just nodded as she found her way into one of the chairs.

Fenikusu ended up staying there for a couple more days. Jacob told her his story of how his childhood, and how he became an assassin. He went on and taught her some of the basics. On her last nights stay there, he sat her down for their last conversation. "Feni, I am glad that I could teach you these things. I am glad that my story is with someone else now. I know that I don't have much longer to live, "Jacob held up his hand as Feni tried to interrupt, "Everyone dies, Feni. You will too one day. It is just all of a matter when, and how." "You taught me much, Jacob. You were more of a father, a parent, to me then my mother has ever been... Should I stay with you - until you - die?" "No...I don't believe that you should."

Later that night as she packed her things, they didn't speak. She left and headed up towards the pier. When she got there, she took one more look at the sail boat. She was ready to walk away and continue down the road, but she saw something on the docks. It resemble a human figure, dressed in all dark colors. She stayed and watched. The figure was heading towards Jacob's boat. Feni climbed back down from the pier and headed towards the boat. The figure was no longer in sight.

Feni opened the door to the inside of the boat, just as the figure stabbed Jacob. This 'man' looked up at Feni and started heading towards her. She crouched into a little ball, hiding. The assassin's body fell limp over Fenikusu. "Come hair, kid." Jacob was gasping for air on the ground, "I have something to give you." "Jacob, you're hurt. What can I do to help?" "It is my time to die, and it looks like this is how. But I don't want you to cry. I want to give you this," he reaches over to the dead body and pulls out a kantana, "This is for you." "Jacob, it's..." She looks over at Jacob as she realizes he is now dead.
