Character Summary

Gerad Octavius Gantert is a character with a very complex and chaotic history. Often swinging from one side of the moral compass to the other for no apparent reason, he has changed considerably over the years. An educated, wealthy man with a noble upbringing, as well as extensive military and criminal experience, he is a true gentleman, and conversely, the consummate villain. His often composed and civil demeanor masks a sinister and primal hatred of the human race, which fuels his drive to scour all forms of life from the face of the earth, in order to re-create it in his own image.

Background - Before CoX

Born on December 11th, 1962 in Riga, Latvia, Gerad was fortunate in that he was born into a great deal of wealth. While the vast majority of Latvia's people were considerably impoverished, especially when compared to the rest of Europe, Gerad's family had managed to maintain a great fortune through exploitation of the lower classes through generations of serfdom and indentured servitude. Additionally, the family had ties to the original Latvian royal family and were thus considered nobility. Since the early 1900's, the Ganterts had also operated a profitable pharmaceutical company, which had grown into one of the leading corporations of its kind in Eastern Europe by the time Gerad was born. Through questionable dealings and political ties, the family managed to hold on to most of their financial resources despite Soviet occupation of Latvia at the time.

These wealthy beginnings afforded Gerad an atypical education, with a curriculum consisting of the arts, literature, theater, advanced mathematics, and science. As he was a precocious child with genius level intelligence, Gerad began college at age 14 and completed his master's degree in sociology by the time he had turned 18. However, his education and wealthy parentage did not exclude him from his military obligations, and at age 19 he was forced to join the Soviet military.

Rather than begrudging his fate, Gerad looked at military service as but another trivial challenge for him to overcome. He served admirably, and though he saw little combat in his first few years, he was punctual, professional, and able to solve problems with novel solutions. His superiors saw a great deal of potential in the young man, and he soon became an officer. With the Cold War looming over the world, the Soviet Union would continue to claim smaller nations through economics, politics, and combat. Gerad's higher ranking allowed him access to special training in infiltration, interrogation, and strategy, skills which would serve him well later in life. However, at the height of his military career, the Cold War ended, and he was discharged from the Soviet military when Latvia regained independence in 1991.

Always cold and distant, Gerad had little to no contact with his family in the past five or so years, owing partly to the secretive nature of his military duties. When he finally returned to Riga in 1992, he found things to be considerably different from when he had left for Moscow over a decade before. Gerad's mother, Brigita, had grown ill and feeble, as the later stages of pancreatic cancer were taking their toll on her. His younger brother Ludis had come of age in Gerad's absence, and also entered the military. However, his parents had heard nothing of his arrival in Moscow, and to this day the man's whereabouts are unknown. Like Ludis, Gerad's father Nikolajs had also gone missing under mysterious circumstances, and before his departure he had sold Gantert Pharmaceuticals to a Danish corporation and given the majority of the family fortune to the Latvian people.

Both heartbroken and enraged at the current state of his family, Gerad came to the conclusion that his brother's disappearance, and his mother's illness had driven his father insane. He stayed with his mother for several months, and at the same time went through various legal channels and family ties in an effort to reclaim as much of the family fortune as he could. However, he was unsuccessful, and following his mother's death in 1993, he left the withering estate for good.
