Character History

1986 - 1999

Michael Ichiro Yoshida was born on April 4, 1986 to Ichiro and Ellen Yoshida in San Fransisco, CA, USA during a business trip his father made, making sure he was there when his son was born, he brought Ellen with him. Yoshida Ichiro was an international lawyer dealing mostly with Asian cartel like the Tsoo. Helping to put many of them behind bars in the US and Japan. The Tsoo took objection to his repeated success in court against them. Many threats were put on his life and his wife. He knew of the dangers but refused any type of protection.

April 4, 1999 in Kyoto, Japan where Michael was celebrating his 13th birthday. Ichiro and Ellen had left to get the surprise birthday present for Michael leaving him to their butler Kyo Takayami. Their return was expected within the hour, but they never showed. Kyo became worried that he had not heard back from either one of them telling him that they were alright. The Kyoto police called at 9:32 pm verifying the death of Ichiro and Ellen Yoshida to Kyo. A supposed accident, Kyo knew better, it was the Tsoo, and they had finally struck back at the Yoshida family. Kyo moved fast. He had to tell Michael what happened, though the known heartbreak that would follow.

"Michael, we must leave." Kyo said.

"Why? Father and mother have not returned."

"I am sorry to have to tell you this Michael, but Ichiro and Ellen have been killed."

Michael said in a quivering voice "H-how?"

"It is best I tell you when you are older, I fear for your well being and will not let you suffer the heartache. It is my burden to bear. Dry your tears young master, I am now in servitude of you."

"Kyo, where are we going?"

"To the United States, at least, an exact place there is still unknown."

April 15, 1999 - 2004

Kyo and Michael make it safely to the United States in Seattle, Washington where Kyo finds a somewhat secluded suburb buying a slightly run down house.

"This is the place, I know it's not much now, but a little work will do wonders." said Kyo.

"So this is where I start over?"

"It's impossible to start over, it's only an opening to a new chapter in your life."

"So tell me Kyo, what of my father and mother?"

"Please, you are still not ready." "Why do you say that?"

"Someone of your age should not have to know such things. Trust me, I will know you are ready, the time hasn't presented itself."

Michael sighs, "Very well Kyo."

Kyo winks at Michael, "So are you ready to work a little bit on this house or not?"

"Okay."

It was only a matter of time before Michael understood what Kyo meant by knowing he was ready. Michael was in the kitchen fixing himself a sandwich late that evening when something came over him. He dropped the knife he was using his right hand began to turn blue-ish touching the sink and seeing a thin layer of ice over it. "KYOoo..!" Michael screamed. "I can still feel my hand, but it's.. like.. free-e-zerb-burn. It hurts."

"Here. Place your left hand on your right." Kyo said. "What were you thinking when this happened?"

"Father." Michael said.

"Now, think of your mother."

"What, why?"

"Again, you must trust me, have you not trusted me before?"

"Okay, let's see what happens."

Slowly white hot flames appear on Michael's left hand to extinguish the cold on his hand. "Why did the heat not burn my hand?"

"Simple. We naturally conduct heat from our bodies, so heat doesn't effect us as quickly cold does."

"So what does this mean?"

"I can't put my finger on it, but I believe you have some sort latent abilities that have just mainifested. In other words, you're a mutant."

"I'm going to turn into something big, ugly, and green, right?"

Kyo laughs, "What makes you think that? But in what I know in Tao lore, you are a living breathing equal to it, you hold two opposites within yourself."

"Taoism, you mean like male and female, the pheonix and the dragon, or good and evil."

"The last part is where you are wrong, Michael. Evil only occurs when there is an inbalance of opposites. Now then, about your father and mother, you will learn the truth."

Finally learning the truth about his parents, Michael wishes he would have been able to save his parents from the Tsoo. Kyo said that even if you did that time it would have little or no good. They are still untrained powers and the Tsoo would have likely taken your life if you had been present. "I don't care. I'll kill them, kill them all for what they have done."

"Anger is not a path worth taking, vengence will poison your mind. We must train. You need to be able to control your new found abilities and use them in the proper fashion. First though I need to make a call to an old friend, he'll be able to make a unit to help control your powers."

April 4, 2004

"It's time for me to go."

"I knew this day was going to come, but I'm glad I'm able to see it, since you father and mother had to miss it."

"I'm sure they appreciate you being here for me whenever I needed it."

"Michael, here. This is your father's will and this is what you have inhereted, use it wisely when you reach your desination."

"I've got a good idea, but don't I need to go back to Japan to do that?"

"Do not worry, they already know your whereabouts, so they know not to wait on you, but you have a place there if you ever want it."

"Thanks Kyo, I don't what I would do without you."

"Now get out of here before you miss you flight to Paragon City. Keep in touch?"

"You know I will, you've become more than just my butler. You're my father, my brother, and my friend, I cannot forget that." Michael looks at his watch, "I better go."

With a departing wave, Michael Ichiro Yoshida made his way to Paragon City, RI.

Creator Notes and Trivia

The history behind Hydrothermia started in Jr. High. Hydrothermia at first was a carbon-copy combination of Iceman and Human Torch, literally split into the middle to show both sides of his abilities. Being created by an encounter between Iceman and Human Torch, but I never fleshed that idea out. He eventually evolved into a more rounded character after leaving his forms absent giving cues from the King of Fighters Kyo Kusanagi and more Johnny Storm/Bobby Drake abilities to turn it on and off, but in a way that his abilities would leave him extremely cold or hot, an added a dampening jacket that allowed him to use both without hinderance.
