"It's Jones. Just Jones."

Investigate is just a man doing his job. He's not some super-powered vigilante, he's just a street-level detective, more suited to dealing with gangs and corruption than to dealing with super-powered villains. Investigate was originally going to be a dual pistols blaster, but when High Jinks told me that he needed a partner, I stepped up to the plate. I've always wanted one of those mysterious characters and that's just what he is. His inspirations are Rorschach, the Shadow, and all those noir detectives.

The man known as Jones is a mystery. He is careful to cover his tracks and for this reason, very little is known about him, which is just the way he likes it. What is known however, is that he is a private investigator and the second half of Smith and Jones Investigations. He met his partner, Smith while they were in college together. They were both interested in private investigating and decided to open their own detective agency.

Smith and Jones Investigations targeted small-time cases like societal corruption and gang activity. They had a reputation for never resting until they cracked a case. This brought them to the attention of one Charity Walton, wife of William Walton, a very powerful politician in Paragon City. She believed that her husband had been cheating on her and was trying to have her killed. The men were reluctant, but she eventually persuaded the men to investigate the matter.

Smith and Jones followed Walton to a lounge in King's Row. It was there that they saw Walton talking to one of the singers. He told her that their affair could continue as soon as his wife was "out of the way". Smith snapped a picture, and the duo ran to give Charity the evidence.

Smith went to confront Walton about his affair, but before he could finish, Wallace was shot in the heart and Smith was knocked unconscious and thrown into the bay in Independence Port to drown. Luckily for him, Jones had been running surveillance and as soon as he saw what happened, he rushed to save his partner.

Smith began practicing with his mutant ability again, determined never to be caught off guard again. Afterwords, Smith and Jones met with Charity one last time. Surprisingly, she pulled a gun on them and told them of how she had orchestrated the whole thing just so she could keep her husband's money. The men attempted to subdue her, but after a brief struggle and chase, she fell off a rooftop.

The case was solved, though admittedly, it had not gone according to plan. The men decided to continue with their chosen profession as partners in crime-solving. So if you ever need a case solved, you know who to call.

Jones is a mystery. He keeps information on a need to know basis, and most people, with the exception of his partner Smith, don't need to know. Of the duo, he's the "bad cop". He's gruff and to the point. Never beating around the bush, Jones can be as subtle as a punch in the face when he wants something, and his information gathering methods usually do involve a punch to the face, maybe even a kick or two.

At the same time however, when Jones wants something hidden, it tends to stay hidden. Clues to his past before meeting Smith are kept locked up tight. Even Smith doesn't know the full story. Several theories as to why he's so secretive have cropped up before, but Jones tends neither to confirm, nor deny any of them.

Always introducing himself as "Just Jones" he can be described as paranoid, and maybe that's the true explanation, either way, it is almost guaranteed that no one will ever find out.

A thinker and a skeptic, Jones needs proof to believe something. He is also a very determined man. These are the traits that make him such a good detective. Not only does he need proof, but he will stop at nothing to obtain it.

• Equipment •

Jones is known for always being prepared. No matter what the situation, Jones will most likely have something to help him. Without the use of hammerspace or a utility belt, Jones usually carries these items in his coat pockets, of which there are many. Several of the items he brings everywhere are:

  • Fedora: It's just an accessory, but Jones is never seen without his fedora.
  • Flashlight: A small, but high-powered flashlight. Never let it be said that Jones can't see in the dark.
  • Lock Picks: No door can keep Jones out!
  • Tracers: Small devices that Jones uses to track things. Also come equipped with a high-powered microphone so that Jones can hear what's going on.
  • Rubber Gloves: So as not to damage any evidence.
  • Evidence Bags: To hold evidence.
  • Handcuffs: To restrain people obviously. Standard-issue.
  • Hand Gun: Although he doesn't like using it, Jones carries it around just in case.
  • Cell Phone: For when he needs to get in touch with people. Usually used to contact his partner, or one of their clients.
