As Maelstrom Force, Jake Cosgrove founded Anastasis as a safe place to land for the former residents of the Children's Hope Quarantine Hospital.
Character History
Like the other children of Celebrate Young America, Jake Cosgrove was quarantined in a hospital facility located on a remote Montana ranch following his exposure to a potentially lethal mutagenic virus. He entered quarantine at six years of age, and though he was cured by the age of thirteen he didn't leave the facility until it closed permanently one year later.
Having been in foster care when he was infected, Jake had no home to which to return after his seven year quarantine. When the hospital closed the lead virologist, a Doctor Tobias Kemper, took Jake into his own home.
Jake never had any formal education after leaving quarantine. He was home schooled by his new foster father. Like the man who directed them, Jake's studies had a narrow focus. The curriculum was limited to math, hard science and German literature. Doctor Kemper described it as "The concrete truths of the world and the ability to express them in a way that stirs the human spirit". To this day Jake's resulting knowledge is characterized by strange depths and even stranger gaps.
Jake became the family for which Doctor Kemper had never found time. He also became the virologist's assistant. The two spent more than a decade both in and out of the lab investigating not only the mechanism of the virus, but its source.
For a time while in the throes of the virus, Jake had been able to unerringly predict wind and weather. Never forgetting what it had felt like to touch that power, when it came time for Jake to find a life outside of the work he shared with Doctor Kemper, he looked to the skies. He became a pilot, and then a showman. He barnstormed in airshows for the money and flew an aerobatic glider for the sheer love of flying.
In the summer of 2007, almost two decades after the viral attack, the investigation into its causes began to bear fruit. The first substantive clues about the source of the virus and the agenda behind it surfaced. Then the Rikti invaded.
Alien energies blasting out of cannons and pouring from interdimensional tears in the sky tore through Jake, reigniting in spades the power he'd only stood on the edge of as a child. He did what any good citizen of Paragon would have done. He registered as a hero and stood with the others against the invading aliens.
He was fighting the Rikti when the men behind the long ago bioterrorism found and murdered Doctor Kemper, taking with them all of the research and notes the two men had gathered, notes that revealed the possibility of igniting real power in the now-grown former quarantine residents.
In September of 2007, Jake Cosgrove used the contacts and resources he and his father had gathered in their investigation to establish Anastasis. Anastasis, from the Greek for 'resurrection' was to be a haven for former quarantine residents. Jake knew that what had awakened in him would awaken in them, sooner or later, slowly or quickly. When it did he wanted them to have a place they could go to cope with and eventually control their newfound power, a place where they could protect each other from the men who had killed his father, a place where they could do great things.
