Personality

For the most part, Joanas Mueler seems pretty mild mannered and resigned to the predicament of being separated from his body. The only strong negative emotions concern Countess Crey or persons who treat him as a thing rather than a person.

Powers

Empathy

The Combat Medical Android is equipped with state of the art medical diagnostic and care systems. Using an advanced nanite delivery system, the android can diagnose injuries and illness efficiently and effectively.

Energy Blast

The Combat Medical Android is equipped with a sophisticated micro-fusion reactor. Plasma can be diverted to the weapons system to defend a location from attack.

Teleportation

The Combat Medical Android is equipped with a short range transport and retrieval system. It can transport to the location of a wounded soldier or lock on to the soldier and transport him or her to the android’s location for medical care.

Stealth Abilities

The Combat Medical Android is equipped with a stealth screen that renders it nearly invisible to most sensors. Additionally, the android can cloak up to seven members of an extraction team.

Character History

The Accident

Before the accident, people who knew Dr, Joanas Meuler would say he was driven to succeed to the point of obsession. He had no family, no relationships outside of the lab and those were strained at best. He saw the heroes of Paragon City as an attractive nuisance. His crowning achievement was to build an android that would be able to rescue wounded soldiers off the battlefield. This android would be guided by a revolutionary new artificial intelligence matrix, one that was intended to become self aware from the start. It would replicate the way a human brain processes information in a crystal lattice. Seeing no better candidate, Joanas mapped the first matrix using his own brain.

The first attempt was less than successful. The IA was fully determining, but lacked any sort of bedside manner or compassion. It was very efficient, but in simulations it would choose to amputate rather than save a damaged limb. This was especially distressing with head wounds. Joanas may not have seen it at the time, but the AI was successful. It was just like himself. With the project deadline looming, Joanas set aside the first matrix and made a second attempt.

And so it was that on the night of December 16, 2004 Joanas was connected to a portable MRI when Electric Eel and his gang broke in. After the attack, Joanas found himself alone in the dark. At first he thought he was dead, but quickly realized he was inside the android. He managed to escape in the android and take his unconscious body with him. He teleported from the lab in Steel Canyon to Crown Memorial Hospital, burning out several circuits in the process. Unable to speak or even move, Joanas was forced the watch his human body be carried away to the ER.

Within an hour Joanas had mastered motor control and was able to move under his own power. The nurses at the work station where he landed were grateful. Joanas watched over his comatose body for a few days, but eventually realized he wasn’t going to be able to reverse this situation without some high powered help. Upon hearing of a plague outbreak in the city, Joanas registered as a hero under the name Mediroid and went to assist.

In early February, the doctors at Crown Memorial decided to move Joanas’ body to a long term care facility. The body never made it to its destination. Joanas doubled his efforts to establish contacts and get to the bottom of who attacked him and why. He joined a supergroup called the Shield, but they mysteriously lost government funding within a month and disbanded. Shortly thereafter, Joanas joined the Guardian Angels Reborn on the recommendation of the hero Dreamkatcher. All the while Joanas was beginning to have problems with the android’s AI. It interpreted Joanas as a destructive program code. Joanas had to be watchful because the AI would strike from behind its firewall without warning.

On the Run

Not long after joining the Angels, Joanas was almost captured by Crey agents. He was forced to go underground and was set up with Estelle Brown, aka Cookie. Estelle was a veteran of the Rikti war who a fought with a group of enhanced soldiers. She was also the head of an underground railroad for people trying to escape Crey, Malta and other groups because of their abilities.

Estelle’s cybernetic parts had fallen into disrepair. Joanas had been one of the engineers who had worked on the human cyborg project a decade ago. Joanas was able to return the favor by repairing her systems. Joanas’ final solution was to build a different android body. Over the next six months he did just that while dodging Crey attempts to capture him. On August 4, 2005 a small team from the Angels successfully took out Dr. Vahzalok and used his lab to start up the fusion core of the Mark II android. Dr. Vahz was held in the Steel Canyon jail for less than 24 hours before he was broken out of jail.

Becoming a Family

During the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, Joanas, Estelle and several other Angels went to new orleans to assist in the recovery efforts. In preparation, Joanas collected all the information he could find on infectious diseases, vaccine synthesis, and public health issues. When Joanas and Estelle reported for duty, Estelle was assigned to a strike team trying to push the Banished Pantheon out of the grave yards. Joanas was assigned to the command center. Joanas expected to be working coordinating operations since he did not need to sleep. He was shocked to find out that the fuel convoy was late and they needed his fusion power core to power the command center. The military general in charge treated Joanas like an appliance.

Estelle decided to go after the missing fuel trucks and found an old friend in the process, RTMS. The Robotic Munitions Training System was one of Joanas’ earlier works in android technology. While not as sophisticated as the Mediroid, RTMS had a number of systems in common. RT helped Estelle liberate the fuel trucks from a bunch of Freakshow. When they returned to the command center with the fuel in tow, Estelle introduced RT to Joanas. RT immediately scanned a kinship through similar technology. When RT learned Joanas’ story, he became “Father.”

Evil Twin

Crey used the stolen AI Joanas created in their portable weapons command and control system. This android could control up to 100 combat drones on the battlefield. This short cut proved to be disastrous during the demonstration. After successfully fending off attacks, a Crey power tank got a shot through Replimax’s shield generators. The android went wild, attacking combatants and observers alike. Replimax was finally brought down by Black Scorpion and mothballed. And thus ended another chapter in Crey’s search for the perfect supersoldier, or so the Countess thought.

During the events that led up to the assault on the Hive Rikti home world, Replimax was accidentally set free by Karnage, Soulfyre and Burnt Heart. The android tracked the movements of the three villains and was led to the Guardian Angels Reborn. Mediroid, RTMS, Cyborg 112 and Replimax were assigned to hold the Galaxy Gate to Perez Park during the final assault. Both androids were nearly destroyed in the battle. To add insult to injury, during the inquiry after the portal to the Hive Rikti home world was closed, the City officials not only revoked the charter for the Guardian Angels Reborn, but also recommended that the Combat Medical Android be shut down permanently. Empathica appealed to Sister Psyche to help establish that Joanas was a human being, albeit trapped in an android shell. Sister Psyche was shocked to discover that the Freedom Phalanx almost killed a person by shutting down the android.

Since these events, Joanas has tried to keep a low profile and has resumed his search for his body. He recently shut down a Revenant Project lab and got a few leads on where to look next. He has also been thinking about what he should do regarding the villain Replimax.
