Childhood
As a child growing up in Independence Port, Trey Orren was a fairly unpopular student throughout elementary and middle school, making a choice few friends but always staying on the fringe of the social circle. He was always interested in radiation and ionized atoms, partially due to his parents both being workers at the Terra Volta reactor, and this fact was commonly brought up and mocked by his peers.
He was always aware of the Heroes that fought to protect the city on a daily basis, as were all the citizens of the city, and he idolized Positron in particular.
Deadly Mutation
One fateful day, during his junior year in high school, he awoke and found that his head felt strange and fuzzy. He went and found his parents dead in their room, though seemingly unharmed, as well as his younger brother. Confused and distraught, he called an ambulance. His entire family was diagnosed with radiation poisoning when the medics arrived, but on the way to the hospital with their bodies, everyone in the ambulance except for Trey suddenly went into fits and the vehicle veered off the side of an interstate.
Trey was able to crawl his way out of the wreckage, but everyone else was dead. Scared and alone, he wandered around the outskirts of the city for a few days, barely surviving.
The Aid of a Hero
Luckily for him, destiny decided to intervene. Positron stumbled upon him a short time later, following a Rikti signal he had detected in the area. He took him back to a secured area in the Vanguard base in the Rikti War Zone, and after an examination of his body, found that his body was now giving off deadly amounts of radiation at an uncontrollable rate. Positron's own suit was shielding him from the effects of it, but nobody else in the city was so lucky.
Positron kept him at the base for a few more days as he constructed a new suit specially designed for Trey. When it was finished, he had it fitted to the teen's body, and found that it was a complete success. The suit monitored and controlled the radiation his body was giving off and dispersed it in relatively small, safe amounts, as well as giving Trey the ability to cause spikes of output at his will to fight with.
Trey thanked the Hero for all the help he had given him, and the two departed as friends.
Taking an Identity
Trey's life as he knew it had irrevocably changed forever. He missed the simple life he had been forced to leave behind, but he took to being a Hero just as well. He named himself Metal Fission not long after departing from Vanguard, and has since become quite adept at controlling his powers, being able to use his radiation in more ways than just to fight.
He fell into the grind of a low-class hero after that, spending his days fighting crime on the streets, all while keeping his friendship with Positron strong.
