Phlogista

From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe

This page is a work in progress - much more to come, so please be patient! Originally her name was "Promethaea", but I was forced to change it because it was too similar to the Alan Moore comic. She was created with the Technology origin because of her close association with the titan Prometheus, but she should really be considered a Tech/Magic AT.

Personality

Phlogista is forthright, friendly and compassionate, but somewhat innocent and inexperienced when it comes to dealing with other people. She can be quite gullible and naive when it comes to misdirection or suspecting motives. She is still struggling to deal with the concept of dishonesty, hypocrisy and the many social games people play on themselves and others.

Powers

Phlogista is a homonculus, an alchemically crafted golem - in this case created as a beautiful Greco-Egyptian woman. Sometimes referring to herself as a gynoid, Phlogista was given life and powers by a spark from the Fire Primordial, which her creator acquired from the titan Prometheus after helping to free him from Zeus' curse. Due to her amnesia, Phlogista herself remains ignorant to most of her nature or true potential.

Invulnerability

Phlogista's body is composed of solidified dynamic phlogiston, a stable substance that almost perfectly mimics human flesh but is nevertheless highly combustible and nigh-invulnerable. Her bones and tissues are constantly being immolated and regenerated internally, and this nearly instantaneous cycle of metabolic creation and destruction makes her resistant to almost all forms of physical injury. She is capable of surviving almost any hostile environment.

Fiery Melee

Phlogista can summon the Fire Primordial in a variety of manifestations, and can manipulate this plasma-like energy into almost any shape, which she often forms into a flaming sword.

Fitness

Phlogista derives her sustenance and vitality from her inexhaustible link to the Fire Primordial. Tapping into the source of the phlogiston gives her incredible stamina that allows her to maintain continuous strenuous physical action for an undefined period. She can also hold her breath indefinitely.

Leaping

Infused with the element phlogiston, she is capable of jumping great distances by making her body lighter than air.

Weaknesses and Limitations

Phlogista has temporarily lost most of her memories and remains rather ignorant about the modern world and naïve in social interactions. She is honest to a fault and has trouble dealing with the idea of things being not as they seem.

Other Abilities

Oddly, despite her amnesia about her origins, Phlogista has perfect recall since coming out of her long sleep. She can remember the minutest details with photographic accuracy, although her awareness of her environment is not always total. If she perceived it, she can remember it.

She speaks Ancient Egyptian, Latin, Greek and Hebrew in addition to modern English and Classical Arabic.

History

Phlogista was created in 639 A.D. by the physician and philosopher Neoplotinus of Alexandria, one of the greatest alchemists to be forgotten by history. After the tragic death of his young wife to plague, Neoplotinus devoted himself entirely to crafting a perfect copy of her, which he wished to use as a shell for her shade to inhabit. Unfortunately, before he could wrest "the means of life" from the titan Prometheus and bring his beloved back from Hades, disaster struck . . .

The following year the city of Alexandria was laid siege by an invading Arab army. After fourteen grueling months, the city fell to the invaders and was sacked. During the chaos, Neoplotinus hid his creation in the catacombs underneath the city to avoid her destruction by the angry mob of Muslim converts. Centuries passed, until, early in the 20th century, she was discovered in a state of perfect suspended animation by an archaeological expedition working for Nemesis. For nearly a century she remained unconscious and on display in the private collection of the notorious arch-villain, until she was accidentally activated by Agent 3-X during her infiltration of Nemesis headquarters.

As of this time, Phlogista retains few memories of her past.

More coming soon . . .
