Personality

Red Photon lacks the ability to understand the subtleties of some human emotions and the ability feel any true emotion. When he was initially built his data banks were filled with combat strategies and military information. As his role in society expanded his programming too was changed. He was made to be able to interact with the “normal citizen” and programmed with such niceties as politeness and respect and the ability to perceive deception and trust. Since his "rebirth" Red Photon has expressed in interest in becoming "more human".

Character History

Red Photon Project

Even before the United States officially entered World War II the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) began developing weapons to counter the Germany Military. Once such weapon was classified the "Red Photon Project". The Red Photon Project was to be the first super soldier; a robot designed to replace troops in extremely dangerous and deadly missions. The thinking was that robots were much more expendable then human life. After several failed attempts a prototype exoskeleton was built. A seperate team of Allied Scientists developed the a highly experimental atomic power drive that would fuel the robotic creation. Finally a third group was at work using the cutting edge of computer and electronic technology to build the "brain" of the robot. Finally on March 5th, 1942 the prototype was complete and sent into action in the fields of Northern Africa.

World War II

Red Photon after defeating a panzer tank.

Red Photon first encountered the Wehrmacht in the north eastern border of Morocco. Red Photon had been sent by Allied Command to engage a Panzer Division holding position near Ceuta. The USS New Jersey delivered Red Photon to a position about three miles off shore. Red Photon disembarked from the battleship and swam the three miles to the coast. When he came ashore he encountered four Nazi machine gun nests. Because of his armored plating, the Nazi weapons were unable to stop Red Photon's advance. Red Photon quickly dispatched the gun nests and moved towards Ceuta. One mile outside the town's border Red Photon encountered three Nazi Panther Tanks. Because of Red Photon's speed and maneuverability the Nazi tanks were unable to accurately target him. Charging his fists with atomic energy, Red Photon was able to tear about the three tanks. After all was said and done, Red Photon had dismantled the panzer division and returned safely to the USS New Jersey. His first mission was a complete success.

Red Photon had over a dozen other sorties into the North African desert. Eventually the newspapers got word of Red Photon. The quickly publicized (possibly at the behest of American Propaganda) the success of this "marvel of American know-how" and made Red Photon out to be a hero. In fact by the end of the war Red Photon had been honored with the American Campaign Medal, the Bronze Star, and the Silver Star. The later actually awarded by President Roosevelt.

Post War Era

Protesters rally in Washington DC to dismantle Red Photon for fear of an atomic accident.
After the Allied Victory in World War II, Red Photon was transferred from the USAAC and placed inside the FBI as a special agent in the fight against crime. His programming was updated to included crime fighting techniques and "diplomatic protocols. Several of his physical systems were also upgraded at that time. For nearly a dozen years Red Photon was just as successful in fighting criminals on the streets of downtown USA as he was fighting Nazis in the deserts of Morocco. However in the "Atomic Decade" of the 60's popular opinion quickly shifted against him. People began to fear atomic power and its destructive capabilities.

Red Photon was still powered by his atomic power drive and was now seen as a potential safety hazard. Citizen groups were worried that he was an atomic bomb just waiting to go off. Organized protest followed Red Photon were ever he went. HIs ability to fight crime became hampered by the protesting crowds. Briefly in November of 1964 Red Photon was again sent to War. This time he was sent to Korea to assist the troops stationed there. However at home the pressure against Red Photon was too great and on December 29, 1964 President Johnson ordered Red Photon dismantled.

Red Photon was immediately recalled from the war in Korea. Instead of the hero's welcome he received at the end of World War II, Red Photon was met with protest, fear and disgust. Military scientists shut him down, dismantled his components, carefully crating each piece separately and stored in him a secret government facility. The great hero was no more.

Rude Awakening

Red Photon's arm recovered from the Clockwork.
In November 2008 several heroes working for DATA (Department of Advanced Technological Applications)in Paragon City received word of unusual Clockwork Activity in Paragon City. Rick Davies began an investigation sending several teams throughout the city. Davies uncovered a plot by the Clockwork to activate a new device which promised to bring deadly consequences to Paragon City. The deeper Davies dug the more clues were unearthed. Eventually one of the heroes recovered an arm that was being repaired by Clockwork for use in their new mechanical menace. The arm showed signs of wear, tear and aging. Tracking a serial number found on one of the servos Rick Davies determined that this arm was part of Red Photon. Apparently the Clockwork were trying to reassemble the long forgotten hero!

Quickly mobilizing a team, Davies recovered the parts of Red Photon from various Clockwork Safe houses scattered around Paragon City. Davies then lobbied the mayor to rebuild Red Photon. After several months of pressure the Mayor agreed and Davies began reconstructed Red Photon, replacing obsolete parts and upgrading his software.

Current Day

On March 5th, 2009 exactly 67 years to the day he was originally activated, Red Photon was once again in service of the people of the United States. Grateful for having been "reborn" Red Photon has dedicated himself to protecting the people of Paragon City.

Recently Red Photon's activities brought him to the attention of a hero named Living Flare. Living Flare as it turns out is a member of the superhero team, the Justice Squadron. After having a meeting with Living Flare in the superteam's mansion Red Photon was asked to join the Justice Squadron. Red Photon graciously accepted the honor. Almost immediately Red Photon, Living Flare, and two other members of the Justice Squadron; Avant Guardsman and Shadow-Sparrow were sent to rescue a kidnap victum. After the success of the mission, Red Photon knew that he had made the correct and logical move in joining up with the Justice Squadron. After all, there is strength in numbers.

Powers

Atomic Powerplant

Red Photon is powered by an atomic powerplant built during World War II. The design of the power plant is so good that when modern day DATA Technicians review the system they left it untouched. The powerplant is one of the few remaining pieces of Red Photon that comes from his original design. Red Photon can use the energy generated by the power plant to charge his fists with energy. The charge is so great that it can stun enemies with just a touch.

Flight

Microbooster Rockets attached to Red Photon's subdermal support structure give him the ability to fly at near supersonic speeds.

Superhuman Vision

Telescopic lens attached to the ocular processors in Red Photon's skull casing allow him to see great distances with fine accuracy. A thermal lens gives him the ability recognize heat patterns and low light optics allow for perfect vision in near total darkness.

Creator Notes and Trivia

Red Photon is inspired by Red Tornado of DC Comics and Pinocchio.

Red Photon was originally created as a Force Field/Radiation Blast Defender on the Liberty Server before I moved to Virtue.

Red Photon was first created as an Electrical/Electrical Blaster on Virtue, but the power set was changed in favor of the Tanker Willpower/Energy Melee set.

Red Photon has appeared in a pen and pencil rpg I have run.
