Portrait of a Goblyn Girl

At 5'3" and just under 100 lbs, Sally is short and slender, but long limbed for her height. Her skin is pale gray/near white, and her generaly shaggy hair is naturaly deep black with a purpilish luster. Her ears are pointed and her mouth; which is able to open noticably wider than a human mouth; is filled with sharp teeth. She has stark features with a slim, pointed nose, tapered chin, high cheek bones, and shadowy, deep set eyes. Sally's eyes are a solid blood red in color with verticaly slitted "catseye" pupils. She habitualy dresses in black goth/punk attire and is especialy fond of heavy, impressive looking boots. Both ears have multiple piercings often filled with nails, large safety pins, or various skull, penticle, or macabre figurine earings. Her right nostril has a dark metal stud, and her left brow has three iron rings through it. Her only noticable tattoo is a black thorn vine band around her upper left arm.

Getting to Know Sally

Crass, caustic, crude, rude, fowl mouthed, ill tempered, and vile mannered are just a few of the adjectives that describe Sally Fletcher. She drinks like four sailors, eats disgusting foods, and chain smokes cigarettes that smell like a composte heap doused in toxic chemicals and set on fire. All with little to no regard for the discomfort of anyone around. Her table manners alone are enough to make you go blind. One of her favorite pass times is the fine old English tradition of "Taking the Piss" in which she is utterly ruthless with anyone daring to cross verbal swords with her. And when she "dances" she's like a ninety-odd pound guided missile with steel-toe boots.

Despite all this, it would be unfair to label Sally as actualy being "evil". She does have a strong sence of personal morals and a respect for individual freedom. Sally's hatred of bullies and other "wankers"; as she would say; is only outstriped by her deadly loyality to her friends and others she deems worthy of respect. Thoes in Sally's inner circle of friends and loved one may be comforted to know that they have on hand a surly, sharp toothed witch who would eagerly and happily eat the living eyeballs out of the skull of anyone who attempts to do them harm.

Sally's Story

Beginnings

Sally Medea Fletcher was born to mild mannered working class parents in the East End of Goblondon where she grew up. Her childhood was fairly typical of the lower middle classes, though she quickly gained a reputation as a sharp minded and feisty little girl. One interesting note was her occasional habit of telling fanciful stories about strange people or things that didn't quite belong in their world. Of course this was chalked up to childish imagination.

By her teens, Sally's growing sensitivity to strange, otherworldly phenomina had convinced her that something was fundamentaly different about herself. As a young adolecent Sally first tried seeking out others among her peers who claimed to have some expierience with the super natural. This was predictably disapointing as her intelect and natural scepticism soon revealed them to be the delusional "believer" and shallow "poser" types that any genuine article cannot help but regard with contempt. So like any true phenomina surrounded by mundains, Sally kept quiet about her expieriences and grew increasingly frustrated, pessemistic, and anti-social.

Fortunately, in her senior year one of Sally's teachers; who was secretly an actual witch and NOT a new-age pagan hippy veegan; noticed something familliar in the surly teen. After delicately establishing a mutual trust, Sally's teacher became her first mentor and began teaching her what was really going on.

This was a time of revalation for Sally. She learned that the world was much stranger, more wonderful, and also more sinister than most people would ever believe. She learned that magic and psionics were true powers and not just the tricks of charlitains and hucksters, and that thoes rare few with true power kept themselves and their abilities secret from the world and history. Most out of fear of persicution by the mundain world, but some out of necesity so that they could more freely act to protect the world from others who would use their abilities in selfish and harmful ways.

Also, goblyns were not alone in the world. Beings only describeable as spirits, demons, or gods walked unseen through the world, and some fairy tale monsters turned out to be all to real. Aliens truly had visited from the stars, and creatures of myth and legend like elves, fairies, and humans traveled the invisible gates between worlds. The secret worlds were a realm of wonder and power, beauty and terror, and Sally was destined to become a part of this.

By the end of her senior year, Sally was casting her first spells. She also learned to hone her innate ability to detect time and space phenomina and the invisible gates between worlds. She was becoming not just a witch, but a natural dimension traveler, a truly rare and potentialy powerful ability. That's when her mentor offered to patron her to a singularly unique university, a pan-dimensional university located not wholy in their world, but in a crossroads of infinate paralel Earths and even other stranger realms, the Illuminati University.

Traveling the Sideral String

After graduation, Sally set off into the multiverse; hitchikeing across the sideral string of worlds as it were; in search of fortune and adventure. Each paralel had scimilarities to her home Earth, but also differences; some barely noteable, others quite dramatic.

Among her many encounters and adventures Sally has sailed the solar winds on a martian pirate ship, danced at the Beatles sixteenth album release party, fought cyborg nazies in the palaces of lost Lemuria, had tea with the evolved dinosaur queen of England, become an urban legend to a race of civilized possims, and drank a Thing Man Was Not Meant To Know under the table at a cross-dimensional saloon.

Then one day, Sally learned of a new Earth. A paralel where fantastic powers ran rampant and paranormal occurences were a daily happening. This strange world on the frontier of the pandimensional community had great potential for fortune and adventure, and Sally decided to go there and see what she could make of it.

Paragon-Earth and the Rogue Isles

Unfortunately for Sally her entry point to Paragon-Earth got caught in a Causality Sink; a sort of temporal anomily of cause and effect occurences that can draw in time travelers like swimmers in a swift current; and she was deposited smack into the middle of an Arachnos raid on Zigkorskie Prison. In the mass confusion of the prison riot, the guards and arriving Longbow agents mistook her for one of the escaping prisoners.

After a few scuffels and a lot of running from indescriminate weapons fire, Sally was able to fast talk her way onto one of the departing Arachnos flyers with the line, "Destined One? Sure, whotever ye say squire. Now scoot over!"

During the flight From Paragon City to the Rogue Isles Sally grilled her "rescuers" and quickly decided that these "spider fetish gits" were just as bad, if not worse than the "red, white, and bollix wankers" who had been shooting at her moments before.

Determined to make her own way in this world (or indeed any other), after touchdown Sally marched right past Kalinda with her two fingers held high and into the first seedy, back alley bar she could find. A gallon of whiskey and six gangers beaten senseless later, and Sally's reputation on this Earth as a freelance witch was born.

One interesting and important note is the fact that at the exact same moment Sally gated into the Zig, another Sally Medea Fletcher gated right into the middle of a Circle of Thornes ritual in the Hollows. This other Sally ended up trouncing the angry mages and was granted a hero licence in Paragon City. The two Sallys are dimensional doubles of each other. Cross referencing their stories would seem to indicate that before arriving on Paragon-Earth, they lead almost exactly the same life (Somewhere out there is a Thing Man Was Not Meant To Know whose friends chide it for loosing a drinking contest to a little slip of a girl TWICE!). They've never met each other (Indeed, quantum physics says they may never be ABLE to meet each other!), but they do know of each other. In fact it is suspected that these two Sallys may have in fact been the same Sally until fairly recently. Best estimates put the origional Sally's point of divergence at some time in her university years. This would certainly explain several discrepancies in her finals weeks exams.

So far the two Sallys are each content to go their own way, and they are so nearly identical that the only reason one is sometimes refered to as "Bad Sally" and the other as "Good Sally" is by the accident of their arrivals and current addresses. That and "Bad Sally" has been known to steal "Good Sally's" laundry from time to time.

Regarding Goblyns

There are many legends of goblyns (or more commonly "goblins"). They have been described as everything from rather stupid little monsters to magical yet ugly farie folk. They are also, often as not said to be green. None of these descriptions is necessarily wrong. In an infinite multiverse practicaly anything is possible. For our purposes here though, goblyns are a mortal, humanoid race scimilar in many fundamental ways to humans, but from a different dimension (dimensions) and a different evolutionary path.

Goblyns average just slightly smaller than humans, with a little less muscle mass, but better dexterity than human norms. Their skin is universaly gray, shading from dusky black to chalky white. Eyes are solid red, shading from pale pink to dark crimson, with verticaly slitted "catseye" pupils. They have sharp features, pointed ears, and a mouth full of sharp teeth. Hair color is always some shade of black or gray and often shaded with some other color (blue, purpil, or red/crimson shaded black are the most common). White hair is rare, but not unheard of.

Goblyns seem to be decended from some type of large, scavenging, nocturnal rodent rather than primates. Evidence of this is in their biology and physiology. Goblyn teeth grow throughout their lives like thoes of rats and mice, and must be worn down by grinding or gnawing or else become uncomfortably long and brittle. They are voratious omnivores capable of eating nearly anything organic including spoiled foods and rotten meat, thanks to their high resistance to natural toxins and disease. In darkness or dim light, goblyn vision can shift to the infrared. They have little to no body hair and do not grow beards. And their finger and toe nails are in fact small vestigial claws.

By human standards, the base line goblyn mentality may seem somewhat devious and vile. This may be attributed as much to the goblyns' oppertunistic nature and comparitively shocking social habits, as to humans' innate distrust of someone with cruel looking red eyes and sharp teeth. Despite their sly personalities and sinister appearance, goblyns are no more "good" or "evil" than humanity as a whole. Point of fact, due to their oppertunistic natures, goblyns are much less likely to be bigoted by such things as race or physical appearance. To their minds this would be needlessly and foolishly denying themselves a chance at gaining something from someone for no appreciable reason. Goblyns are less influenced by things like social mores, prejudices, dogmatic thinking, and blind fanaticism. They still have all these traits, but they are less likely to act on them if there is an opertunity for gain by ignoring them.

This is both a blessing and a curse for goblyn society. On the pluss side they are very nondiscriminateing. So race, religion, nationality, and gender are not so much an issue for them. The down side is that they tend to be more selfish and fractuous than humanity and this leads to competition and/or conflict between individuals and groups on a much more regular basis.

To illistrate this; humans would find goblyn politics incredably confusing with its' plethora of groups, factions, cells, and individuals all plotting, scheeming, double crossing, bribing, spying, stealing, cheating, fighting, and switching sides at the drop of a hat. By comparison human politics is two old men debating debating between fish or chicken for dinner. Goblyn leaders are thoes who can scheem and swindle their way to the top while keeping the majority of the population relatively happy with the job they are doing. Goblyns know and respect that their "leaders" are crooked and that this is as it should be. Goblyns don't so much follow as more sort of go along with if it suits their interests, but so long as the leaders are crooks who are "on their side" they're happy. Unpopular leaders never last long in goblyn society before they are replaced. One way or another.

Goblyn-Earth

Goblyn-Earth is one of thoes paralel Earths that is very scimilar to our own (Real Life) world, but with one or two fundamental differences that affect the details of every specific scimilarity. The Devil, as they say, is in the details.

First and foremost is the obvious fact that goblyns, not humans, are the sole sapient race (as far as they know) to have developed on their world. Their nations, cultures, and history are very scimilar to ours (Egypt, Rome, Shakespear, the rise and decline of the British Empire, the United States of America, two World Wars followed by the Cold War, Einstein, the Beatles, Star Wars, MTV, cell phones, 911, reality TV, etc etc etc...), but the specific details of nearly all of these events are some what skewed due to the different nature of goblyns from humans.

For example. During Goblyn-Earth's World War II, there was a plan by their nazis to eliminate jews and other "non-desirable" types, but it was mercifuly much less effective than on our world. There were several reasons for this. For one it was much more difficult to stir up so much unreasoning racial hatred among the general population. Gentile goblyns may see jewish goblyns as competition for wealth and resources, but they are also their neighbors, and more often than not their friends and business partners. Killing or driving off the people you do business with makes no sence after all. Also once word got around of the nazi's "Final Solution" (and word on what they were up to got out much sooner than it did on our world) the jews and other "non-desirable" types were quick to flee, hide their identies, or fight back. And they had quite a lot of help doing this. The death camps were under almost constant attack from resistance fighters and the Third Reich war effort suffered daily from sabotures and spys so much so that they were forced to abandon their racial "cleansing" efforts due to necesities of resources and man power when the Allies set foot in Europe.

The above is just one example of how scimilar events on Goblyn-Earth play out somewhat differently than on our world. Their entire history reads this way with nearly all the same major events happening, but the specific details of them being quite changed due to the nature of the goblyn species. At first glance their world and ours seem quite the same except with goblyns replaceing humans. If you scratch the surface however you will immediately see the differences. All of wich just goes to show that no matter how you slice it, there realy is nothing new in the multiverse. And so it goes.

Notes on Sideral Physics

Causality: The universal/multiversal law of cause and effect. Causality plays a key role in the generation of divergences and paralels. The full measure of this is not entirely understood, but it is believed to be a direct relation to the Uncertainty Principle that states that not only is it possible for a single particle to exist in more than one place at the same time, but that according to quantom physics it MUST.

Divergance: The point at wich a time line splits and generates paralels with different outcomes to the same event.

Multiverse: The near as infinite number of paralel universes/dimensions existing along the Sideral String.

Sideral: (side + temporal) Meaning literaly "sideways through time" rather than linearly. Measuring time along all the various paralel "nows" instead of from past to future or future to past.

Sideral String: The "path" of sideral time through the paralel universes. Close paralels with more recent divergance from the base line, or "home" universe are nearer on the Sideral String than thoes paralels that diverged farther in the (linear) past. This is not necessarily a quality of "sameness". A paralel that diverged in the late 1940s with the Axis powers winning World War II would be more different than a paralel that diverged much earlier, but aside from some key differences had history play out much the same as our own. ie: Earth-46498759-4 is nearly identical to our own except that clovers are normaly four leafed and a five leaf clover is thought of as good luck. Goblyn-Earth also diverged many millions of years ago with evolution favoring a group of rodents rather than primates to become the planet's dominate sapient race, but still had all the major historical events closely paraleling thoes of our world.
