History

Lucas Armstrong was a born to fly. So when it came time for him to start the next chapter of his life, the Air Force was the logical choice. After an injury got him discharged from duty, Lucas took a job flying air-freighters for a small pan-atlantic company. Though he was content, Lucas missed the excitement of flying 'real jets'. That all ended when a freighter he was flying lost an engine and had to make an emergency water landing. Lucas was knocked unconscious and woke up alone on an island somewhere in the north atlantic.

Lucas spent the next few days exploring the island and searching for food. After the seventh day without food, Lucas collapsed on the beach, only to be awoken the next morning by the waves splashing against his face. As he slowly arose, he found that a great beast had washed up on shore. The creature appeared dead, and with Lucas in his starving feeble condition, he didn't much care about what it was or where it came from. He survived for the next few weeks feeding on the creatures flesh and using its scales to fashion clothing and covering for the cold nights. Over the time he began to grow stronger, faster and more resilient. He began to notice that he could hold his breath underwater for hours at a time, and that when he entered the water, his body seemed to coat itself in an oily substance that allowed him to move more freely in the water.

Knowing that he was unlikely to be rescued, Lucas decided to swim for it. About 200 miles out, Lucas encountered a school of sharks. Not knowing what to do, Lucas decided that this was his time. He tried to remain calm, but his nerves got the better of him, and he made a swim for it. The sharks proved more cunning than he had hoped and encircled him. Then a strange thing happened. A poison mist shot from his fingertips and immobilized his attackers.

Lucas made a break for the safety. After three days of swimming, Lucas made it to shore in Rhode Island. Paragon City, Rhode Island to be more precise. As he wandered ashore, he found a group of hoodlums breaking into a warehouse. Feeling tired, he had hoped to simply pass by unnoticed. Unfortunately, due to his outfit, the thugs assumed that he was a hero there to break up their theft ring. As the thugs began opening fire, Lucas' frustration began to grow. And as it grew, the weather aroung him began to worsen. The rain intensified and the wind rose. Suddenly a bolt of lightning struck in the center of the thugs. They scattered, and Lucas all but wet his pants.

Lucas went in search for answers as to what was going on with him. He tracked down Phoenix Stormhawk. He described what happened to him and the creature in detail. Stormhawk surmised that one of two things had happened. Either Lucas had encountered the mythical Jörmungandr, or he had encountered a species on which the myth was originally based and that the venom in the beast had caused a chemical reaction in his body that triggered a latent DNA strand that gave him access to his powers. Seeing as the whole magic story was more interesting and easier to explain, Lucas opted to believe that one despite the scientific evidence that the latter explanation was right.

Lucas didn't want to be a hero, and still doesn't. He just seems to keep stepping into trouble and running into troubled people that keep him knee deep in heroics.

Character Evolution

Originally named Sea Man, Man O' War got his new name after goading from others about the inuendo laden name. Other than that, he is exactly the same as when he was orginally envisioned. Then after stupidly letting the name Man O' War go, the old name became available again and here we are.

Influences

Sea Man is influenced mainly by Aquaman, but not in a good way, and Namor. Since most undersea themed characters seem to hail from Atlantis, it seemed appropriate for a new undersea character to avoid those cliches. It also seemed appropriate to give him powers other than the usual super strong stereotype that they seem to fall into.
