Aviates

Biology

Aviates appear to be a mix of a bird and a human. This is a result of their evolution over centuries of living in flying, floating cities in the sky. The most noticeable features of an Aviate that differentiate them from normal humans are their wings, their ears, and their eyes. Their wings are to help them traverse the skies of Skyreach. Their ears to hear over longer distances. And their eyes to likewise see over longer distances.

In general, Aviates are smaller than humans. Females have similar heights as humans, their average at about 5'4" but rarely get over 5'5" and rarely under 5'3". It's also rare to meet a female who weighs more than 130 pounds. Male Aviates are generally shorter than human males, their average height falling at about 5'6" and rarely getting over 5'8" and rarely under 5'4". Aviate males usually weigh around 150 pounds.

The differences between the two races isn't simply external. Internally, Aviates are different as well. They are made for flying, possessing hollow bones and an increased lung capacity. Though their bones are still relatively strong despite being hollow, they are hollow, which means they are more susceptible to breaks than humans are. Each Aviate is also capable of making his or her voice incredibly powerful, potentially causing their voice to travel over great distances. Comparatively, Aviates also have better balance than humans, which enables them to perch on positions that a human would normally not be able to.

Compared to humans, Aviates have a much greater variety of eye colors and hair colors. It's not uncommon to see an Aviate with near-white hair and violet eyes. The most defining feature of an Aviate - the wings - also vary greatly, from black, to gold, to brown, to white, and even more.

From birth, each Aviate possesses an ability which they have labeled as their Call. A Call is unique to each individual, and it is rarely used outside intimate company. It is usually reserved for close family and significant others and is rarely heard in public.

On average, Aviates live longer than humans, their average lifespan being at around 150, with some accounts of Aviates living up to 250 years. They mature at a similar rate as humans, but they age slower for the rest of their lives. This makes it possible for the head of a family to have several generations of relatives within their family system. (See below.)

Society

Aviate society is, by and large, an oligarchy. Power in the society is largely determined by the power of the family and the head of the family, known as the Matriarch or the Patriarch, depending on gender. Power can be gained in any number of ways, including military renown, monetary gain, or the general betterment of Aviate society. The Matriarch or Patriarch of a family must be a powerful figurehead. If they are not powerful, it's possible for a family to lose its status within society. That's not to say they could never regain their former standing. There is a stigma attached to those who are the heads of their family and aren't ideal, particularly with powerful families.

All Aviates speak a language that equates to English, but they also know other tongues, which are only used within certain circles. Depending on their standing and where they may go, many Aviates know several languages, with the head of the family generally knowing the most languages out of the entire clan.

Aviates are normally peaceful towards fellow Aviates, even those of other clans. There have been numerous wars between clans for dominance, but currently all families have (at the very least) uneasy truces with the other families. However, pirates remain a looming threat over all clans and cities, even the more powerful ones. Aviates have created a semi-sentient race of (comparatively) low-tech automatons for protection against pirates.

For many generations, the strongest family within Aviate society has been the Windsoarer clan, followed by the Sharpeye clan, the Strongwing clan, the Brightsky clan, and the Silvercloud clan. Though, the actual strongest shifts occasionally, it has been quite some time since any of the five have not been in the top five.
