Susan ( Sushi) Ellis Cray
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe
Susan Ellis Cray is currently a resident of Paragon City. Born in Los Angeles to Margaret and Phillip Cray,(no relation to the Crey of CreyCorp) a pair of brilliant physics students who were at that time in the UCLA graduate program. Making their mark in interdimensional physics, the pair took positions in the R and D department of the then burgeoning Portal Corporation. Margaret, the brains of the pair, pursued theory, effects and research while her husband, an imaginative and brilliant engineer, worked on technological implementation. They were a team who were soon recognized for their innovative approaches and designs.
However, when Susan was only three they were at ground zero when the portal containment system they were working on failed and in the ensuing explosion and interdimensional rift were killed along with everyone in the building. She became the ward of Portal Corp., who took in all the children of the employees killed in the incident, maintained them in a private orphanage, and her school and welfare was completely paid for. While her life was spare it was also comfortable and secure, if insulated.
When she graduated high school, she was on her own. And so, with a small trust fund supporting her until she was 21 she now lives in Paragon in Founders Falls. She is independently wealthy, as her parents patents pay considerable royalties to her in an escrow, but while she will always be comfortable and never lack for comforts, she is not vastly wealthy – having a couple of million may seem a lot, but maintaining her hero activities it doesn’t stretch as far as one might think.
She works as a hero for the simplest of reasons – because she can. She has seen the turmoil around her in the City, and between invasions, the Praetorian War and various criminal elements she has stepped up and fought them on the idealistic principle of believing that if she can, she should.
Sushi’s strengths are entirely based on her intellect. She’s a super-genius mechanically and in terms of physical sciences and energy physics. An irrepressible tinkerer, she comes to conclusions and solves problems intuitively –some plod along with doing painstaking research, crossing the I’s and dotting the T’s, coming to valid and irrefutable solutions. Susan, on the other hand, jumps from concept to execution in an eyeblink, interpreting by leap of intuition, knowledge and a little bit of bit luck to the same answer. If analysis and research are the mainstay of the serious science or tech hero, Susan could be said to follow the practice of leap before looking because what’s on the other side is bound to be interesting! Granted it’s risky, but that’s half the fun!
This is most frequently typified by her devices and armors. She builds them on the fly, frequently from what junk, salvage or random parts she can find, and they almost always work.
Usually.
Practically every time!
Mostly!
This haphazard approach is due to her technical brilliance, raw talent, a completely unshakable faith in her ability to build anything to do anything, and a total lack of risk assessment skills. The usual result is she’s generally successful, and when she suffers the inevitable spectacular failure its almost always merely an overlooked design flaw, readily remedied on her next trip to the shop. That is, assuming she doesn’t get sidetracked by some other equally shiny problem to solve along the way.
This, then, is Sushi’s one and only real superpower – all of her abilities are simply devices she’s built or tinkered together, ranging from her rocket boots, piston jumpers, rocket board and many pouches of tools and bits for in the field repairs, to the power suit/armor Pink Bruno. (Once you see it, the reason for the name is obvious)
She is a past master of teleportation technologies. Naturally gifted at abstract mathematics she thinks on the quanta state as a matter of course (which is one reason she is sometimes regarded as functionally insane – it’s her preoccupation with so many abstract concepts that it tends to put her in an autistic state when she gets on a roll) and uses teleportation tech on a frequent basis. This can be seen in a variety of her favorite functional tech gadgets, from her personal teleportal grid sewn into her clothing (Instantly porting any outfit from her closet! Yay tech, and ever so fashionable!) to being able to summon Pink Bruno on demand, to the portal beacons mounted in all her weapons systems allowing her to resupply and replenish ammo and power cells on the fly.
It’s not unusual to encounter her using energy blasts, directing a small herd of robots or even super strength tasks in her armors. She simply directs her tech to the task at hand.
It’s also typical of her usual approach – she hates fighting but does it as necessity, and as such sees it not as a heroic solution but one that involves pain and bruises. Therefore, it’s easier to avoid it, leading to her preferred weapon, the Snotgun. This device fires blobs of sticky gel laced with nanotechnological portal beacons, and by piggybacking the global GPS and teleportation grids, she then simply sends her opponent far away.
Far, far away.
A preferred point of arrival is low orbit – she figures if they can survive reentry, she’ll have been long gone by the time they get back on the scene. (And a good thing too, since they are bound to be pissed!) Another favorite point of arrival is the bay in Independence Port, smack on top of Lusca. Everyone likes seafood, right?
All her energy blasters and zero point energy manipulations are dependent on her tech – and she’s constantly fiddling, tinkering with and improving her gadgets, with the results that her tech usually looks like a mixture of everything she finds and a strangely elegant but half melded look of composite devices.
As such, this also sums up all of her weaknesses – without her tech she’s just an abnormally bright hyperkinetic 24 year old girl, physically. Permanently hyper kinetic, her metabolism is locked into overdrive – she never sleeps, or when she does it’s so seldom as to be inconsequential – and also accounts for her borderline nuttiness. Sushi is deathly afraid of having nothing to do and as such is always looking for some new project. It also is the reason for a certain degree of fatalism – due to the hyperkinetics, she can expect a lifespan of thirty years, perhaps thirty five, and she knows it. Thus, she lives her life at a breakneck pace.
She’s no stronger than you’d expect a skinny, 94 pound five foot two inch girl to be (not very) and is as likely to go down from a club to the head, fire attack or gunshot as any mundane. Her only really decent defense is against psychics, as physic emanations and such can be shielded by the gear she wears, implanted psi-shields that scramble the brains electromagnetic emanations. They don’t prevent a psychic from detecting her presence but handily stop even the most powerful psychic from reading her mind and discerning her thoughts (she has real privacy issues where psi is concerned) but it offers no defense at all against physical psi attacks, like telekinesis or pyrokinetics. It simply prevents people from reading her thoughts.
She’s a moderately skilled hacker and programmer, as it’s necessary to manage hardware/software interfaces – but no more than moderately proficient, and there are far better hackers than her out there. She compensates for this by means of her direct neural input jacks behind each ear – there’s many better hackers than Sushi out there, but very few faster at equipment interface and data mining and analysis.
In all other respects she’s physically frail, being no stronger, faster or more agile than any typical teenager. While she physically fights on a regular basis, what little ability she has is, as noted, augmented by her armor. She has no training or intrinsic skill, and her martial style is best described in her own words – “I bop ‘em in the snotbucket till they say uncle."
Sushi's Technologies
Sushi has a variety of tech and gadgets at her disposable, these are some of the ones she most commonly can be seen employing.
Pink Bruno
Powered by a salvaged Rikti antimatter power cell, Pink Bruno was conceived as a protective suit to avoid the inevitable injuries common to hero work. ( In other words, Sushi took a serious beating and decided that was enough of that.) Why she calls it Bruno is a mystery known only to her, but its coloring is simplicity in itself - she built it during Breast Cancer Awareness Week, and painted it in support of the cause. Having done so, she decided she liked it that way, and its been Pink Bruno ever since.
Pink Bruno is 3.1 meters tall, operated as a powersuit. Sushi rides inside, Landmate style ( she was inspired by the giant robots and hard suits of PPD and Vanguard as well as years of anime viewing) and much like Positron the suit provides all her protection and offensive and defensive capabilities.Weighing in at almost two tons, its also a heavyweight piece of hardware, and she's cautious when using it indoors, having fallen through the occasional floor. It is equipped with zero point energy projectors, Snotgun launchers, uses millimeter band radar, light intensification and infrared, as well as a wide range of sophisticated sensors. It can handle her plasma rifle ( adapted for size of the suit) and employs antigrav technology recovered from an Arachnos flyer for its flight capability. Its loiter time is seven hours, can maintain speeds of 230 miles an hour (374 KPH) and uses Chobham and salvaged Vanguard Impervium plating for it's protective panels. It also has a completely sealed internal cockpit, being capable of operating in the vacuum of space and underwater to 100 meters, providing protection in toxic and hazardous environments and has its own coffee maker.
Robots
Sushi frequently employs robots, drones, remote fliers and all sorts of surveillance devices. She will often disdain guns ( she's actually afraid of them, but tries to deal with it as they are a common problem in the hands of enemies) but will stoop to their use, usually while piloting Pink Bruno. Her preferred method of attending to enemies is a swarm of bots, and the base literally crawls with her bots as they manage all manner of tasks from fabrication to housecleaning to other, less obvious chores. ( She has a small bot called Shemp that she built from a toolbox that is dedicated to collecting, picking up after her and keeping track of all her tools, for example)
Linked to them by direct neural input/output, they can be both a blessing and a curse - while linked they are eyes, ears and hands at distance, but the trade off is she can be vulnerable to a neural hack if she isn't careful. While this is a known worry, and she has defenses in place its her weakest technological defense due to its nature, and she regards it an acceptable tradeoff for its usefulness. But she's been brought down by a neural assault before, and while cautious is aware that its her most vulnerable technology.
Portal Technologies
Sushi is a past master of portal tech, having studied and expanded on her parents patents and uses them in a vast and often bizarre variety of ways. This is evidenced by the Snotgun, which when fired spatters her target with a sticky blob of gel laced with teleport nanonodes, and which then ports the target to a distant point. The weapon is nuerally linked, a "smartgun" and she can switch its target/delivery destination at a thought. These destination points thus far have been revealed to be the following:
1. Low Orbit ( 120 miles above Paragon in geosynchronous orbit)
2. The bed of the Marianis Trench
3. The Zigursky Prison
4. The bay of Independence Port, directly at sea level to Lusca's lair.
5. The nearest hospital linked on the Emergency Medical Transport System ( useful for getting friends out of harms way while injured)
6. The center of the lions cage of the Paragon City Municipal Zoo.
She routinely uses teleporter tech for travel, to port clothes, items and weaponry to herself and away, and at need can use her personal beacon to return to her base from almost anywhere she can link to the global grid.
Backstory
Sushi's back story has both known and unknown elements, as she has on occasion worked on both sides of the street.
