Variabelle is a level 50 Mind Control/Thermal Radiation Controller, with a Mutation origin. She has recently agreed to help lead a new supergroup and has been in Paragon City since early 2010. Her full name is Ryan Elise West, and she was born in Atlanta, Georgia on on May 12, 1980. Ryan's telepathy and pyrokinesis manifested during her late childhood, but the girl and her parents decided to keep her abilities as quiet as possible. There were few complications with her growing abilities as the family invested in training her discreetly with the help of a meta-human specialist for much of her adolescence. Upon graduating from high school, Ryan attended University of Virginia and earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. She then went on to study at UCLA and eventually earned her PhD in psychology.

In 2006, she applied to the Federal Bureau of Investigations and was admitted to begin training as a criminal profiler. Despite Ryan's lifelong commitment to avoid the use of her meta-powers, the FBI felt her special abilities gave her insight into super-human criminals. After two years in the Bureau, she was assigned to a task force that had been tracking a series of bombings that had been carried out against federal offices and construction sites. During the course of the investigation, Ryan was attacked by one of the men behind the bombings. Her physical injuries healed in a matter of weeks, but the assailant had also used mental powers against her. As a result, Ryan's control over her telepathy changed dramatically. She is no longer entirely sure what will happen when she attempts to control an individual's mind. They could sleep when she means for them to be afraid, or they could lift into the air when she means to confuse them. Ryan left the FBI in 2009 and moved to Paragon to continue working for justice.

Details, Details

  • Ryan is 5'5" and weighs about 125 pounds. She's the older daughter of Philip and Felicia West. Her younger brother is named Matthew, and he's living at home while attending graduate school.
  • Ryan was named after her paternal grandfather.
  • Even before her accident, Ryan has never been able to read someone's mind. She can gain impressions about intentions and emotions, but she cannot determine specific thoughts. For example, she might be able to tell that someone is lying, but she won't be able to tell what exactly they're lying about.
  • She considers her training as a psychologist and profiler to be as important as her mind control and pyrokinesis to her work as a hero.
  • The case that led to Ryan's injuries and departure from the FBI remains open. The man who attacked her has not been caught.
