Early life

Caleb grew up in the care of his grandfather. He never knew his mother, and his father was at often times away on what he called business. The young boy pained to be with his parents, and his grandfather often wanted to share what he knew with the young boy, but was sworn to secrecy. As a result of being left alone most of his life, Caleb immersed himself into his studies and sports. He excelled at sports, and his grades were always top tier. Little did he know that both cases were a result of his mystic past. There was one area of his life that he failed in, and that was women. They made him nervous and for the longest time he just gave up on them all together, instead delving deeper into his love for sports and knowledge.

Upon graduating high school, Caleb enrolled in classes at Paragon U. After four years of learning, as well as staring on the school's sports teams, Caleb got his teaching degree. He wanted to give back to the young people of Paragon the way his teachers had made an impact on his life. At this time his grandfather also passed away, and it had been a good ten years since he had last seen his dad. Now Caleb was truly on his own, though his life was about to change dramatically.

Jessica Evans

Caleb's first year of teaching was going exceptionally well, the students responded wonderfully to his ways of teaching. He not only brought knowledge to his classroom, but he brought a sense of humor that he used in his teaching technique. Caleb lived in Steel Canyon, very close to campus, and on Halloween night came a knock at his front door. Upon opening the door, Caleb was shocked to see one of his students, Jessica Evans standing there before him. After asking why she was there, and her response that she needed to speak to him about something, he stepped aside and let her in. The young girl spoke of many things that were going on with school and various other things. Finally Caleb being uneasy with her being there, asked what it was she wished to speak to him about. After much silence and collecting her thoughts, she blurted out that she had feelings for her professor. Horrified at what he just heard, Caleb attempted to tell the young woman that her feelings were a mistake and that she could not feel that way for him. He also strongly told her that he did not feel the same way. Jessica left his house that night, a bit distraught, feeling rejected.

A few weeks later, a strange Ankh medallion had found it's way to his night stand. After it's appearance, Caleb started having strange dreams of his father calling to him, telling him to wear it and use it's powers. Finally he tucked it away in a drawer, attempting to forget it all together.

The next few months went by, and often times Jessica would ask for help after class, or to speak to Caleb when the other students were gone. Never was her feelings brought up again, but there was an uncomfortable feeling for Caleb when these sessions would take place. Winter break came, most students had left for spring break. Sitting in his home once more one night, his phone rang. Upon answering it he found it to be Jessica in hysterics. She was crying and saying that her former boyfriend would not leave her alone. Caleb attempted to calm the young girl down many times, but getting no where. Finally he agreed to come to her house to make sure that she was safe.

Getting to her house, he found the frond door open, stepping in he found Jessica crying in the living room with her former boyfriend standing before her. There were no lights on, so only dark silhouettes could be seen. He asked what was going on, when her former lover began to speak in an angry tone, claiming that Jessica had left him for another man and that he wanted to know who it was. Jessica said there was no other man, and Caleb attempted to calm the boy down. What happened next is mostly a blur for the young teacher. A flash of light, a loud bang, then another. His vision impaired, he called out both students names, getting no response. Making his way to the light switch and turning it on, he was horrified to see both students laying in a pool of blood, shot to death by the young man.

Drowning in a bottle

For almost a year after the death of Jessica Evans, Caleb had found solitude in the bottle. He would often times drink heavily, attempting to forget what had happened that night. He found himself wishing that he had acted more, that he was able to do more. Remembering the Ankh from the year before, he pulled it from it's resting place. What happened next was something that he thought was a dream.

"Wear it!" Caleb turned around sharply to find a small red demon like man, with horns, a tail and wings upon his back.

"Who are you?" He asked, unsure of where this person even came from.

"I am a friend of your father's, and he wants you to wear that. It was his you know, and he could wield it's power better than any before him. You have that potential, you just are too stubborn to see it."

"I'm sorry," replied Caleb, "Forgive me if I don't take the advice of a strange little man dressed for Halloween..."

"Caleb Hawkins," the little demon cut him off, "You are the son of Gregory Hawkins, the former War Mystic. I am sorry to tell you, but your father is no longer among the living. He gave his life to save a village in the mystic realm. A dark wizard took his life, and now the Ankh falls to you."

"How do you know my father's name?"

"Dear Gregory, your father did say you would be stubborn." The little demon lifted himself from the ground, his wings flapping. He came eye level with Caleb, his stubby hands grabbing his face. Peering into his eyes, he turned his head from side to side. "Your father was a man of magic, and upon his passing he was granted a seat on the mystic council for the deeds he has done in his time. I know, I know, you are a man of science! Everything has an explanation and magic does not exist. However answer me this, when I arrived you were stumbling drunk, but now you are sober right?"

Caleb looked down at himself, sure enough the demon was right. He went to respond but was cut off once more. "You also have never been ill, and you excelled in every athletic thing you have done. That is because magic runs through you. It heals, it enhances and yes it even makes a stupid drunk sober with a mere thought."

"That is..." Caleb was once more cut off by the demon. "Impossible? Yeah I suppose you could say that, or your could just say it was magic." The demons hand lifted palm up, a red glow to it before a helm appeared in his hand. "This is also yours, it's the War Mystic helmet, it allows you to better focus your magic abilities. Trust me and put them both on, what harm could it do?"

Caleb took the helm in one hand, looking at both items with a sense of caution. The demon may be telling the truth, all that he was saying had a sense to it, however magic was not something he believed in. He flashed the demon a smile, putting the Ankh around his neck, and speaking as he lowered the helm to his head. "I will do this, but only to prove you wrong demon." With that, Caleb's clothes changed, adorned in dark blue and gold, a long flowing cape behind him. He glanced down to his now gloved hands, astonished at what just took place.

"Was easier than you said it would be Gregory." The demon looked up at the ceiling as he said this, as if speaking to a spirit. Bringing his eyes back down to Caleb, his fangs glistened within his smile. "Your father stayed away from you, for fear that if anyone knew you were his son they would surely come to you and take your life, thus ending the line of the War Mystic. It's now your turn to take his place, and fight the evil and dark magic of the world." He lifted his hand, running it in a circular motion and a round blue portal opened. "Come we are off to the Tower of Serratus, it's your father's keep...well now it's yours actually." The demon stepped halfway into the portal, stopping to look back at Caleb. "Name is Charlie by the way. My demon name is too hard to be spoken in the human tongue, so your dad nicknamed me Charlie."

With that, the War Mystic was reborn.
