Character Concept
- I had found the name Wavebreak on a list of names in the Virtue Character Name thread on the Official forums and wanted very desperately to make a character out of the name. The initial problem that I was faced with was the blatant lack of water powers (outside the Villain Patron pool powers).
- And so, I looked at the options that were available to me. The first challenge was picking an appropriate archetype. I wanted a class that could be easily soloable, and something I haven't played before. The original options that I saw were blaster and defender (or corruptor). Powers such as Dark Miasma, Energy, and Kinetic would look exquisite as water powers. Incidentally, I've even seen powers such as Gravity set and Radiation effectively used as water powers... but none of them really spoke to me.
- I took the opportunity to play in the character creation screen, changing colours and choosing powersets at random. I finally decided on Scrapper. The new set, Kinetic Melee, looked to be promising. The only other option was to choose a secondary set that was appropriate. I have a Regen character already, but I enjoy it very much and decided that perhaps it was time to try it again.
- Setting Kinetic Melee as a water power is looking promising. It won't be until level 32 when I've chosen all my powers that I'll really notice how well it works, but at level 22, it already appears vibrant and fluid. I find it refreshing to be able to use this basic element of the planet as a melee power. The other powers would have worked well, too, but I am very happy with the choice.
Personality
- Wavebreak was created as a Silver Age style character. She may not be an extremely classic, super happy shiny character, but I'd like to think she's fairly realistic and pleasantly mild-mannered. She is confident in her abilities, courageous in her endeavours, and thorough in her execution. She works well alone or in a group, taking the well-being of her colleagues and the people she protects into account.
- When faced with a decision, Wavebreak will always pause and consider the consequences. She will not endanger the lives of innocent people if it is within her power and sees not only herself, but other heroes as tools for the public. As far as she is concerned, people who have a gift who can help humanity, should help humanity. The very idea of Supervillains confuse her. She cannot understand how some people can do such terrible things to others for their own gain.
- Above all, Wavebreak places great value in life. She has never killed a man, and if is ever faced with the choice, would rather see a person live and be rehabilitated. She understands that the justice system is flawed but has a naive hope that one day it will be rectified. It is difficult to guess how she would react if she should ever kill a person. She would likely turn herself in right
- Wavebreak has a strong sense of loyalty to the community but has no desire to make her true identity public. She works hard to juggle hero work and real life; as a result of her moonlighting, often finds herself late for class, appointments, and other civilian obligations. Her hero persona is almost always on time -- unless something unlawful catches her attention while she's on her way.
Sabrina's Secret
- Wavebreak's secret identity is Sabrina Saint. She is a shy young woman who has difficulty making friends. She longs to be close to people but is almost terrified of human contact. She moves quietly with her head down, wanting only to navigate from point A to point B. She often "swims" through crowds of people like a salmon upstream to get to where she needs to go, and she never looks back. She often wishes her mutant power was invisiblity.
- As a child, Sabrina was outgoing and vibrant. She had her goals in mind and worked hard through school to achieve high grades and commendations from her teachers. It wasn't until middle school that she began to develop a serious case of apprehension around people. The girls in her school were typical teenage girls. Many were far more interested in fashion, gossip, and the media than in academics. Sabrina was often teased and bullied growing up and decided that it was best to keep to herself. When confronted, she would cry, cower, or run, even if the person confronting her had no desire for ill-will.
- Sabrina has always had a passion for reading and writing. She currently studies English at Paragon University and aspires to be an Editor one day for a newspaper, a publishing company, or another mass-print organisation. When she isn't heroing or studying, she is either reading a book or swimming. The one thing that Sabrina will never be able to hide is her love of water and the ocean. If she wasn't such an introvert, she would likely have joined a swimming team.
OOC Note
- The player requests that Sabrina not simply be recognised as Wavebreak when in civilian clothing, and vice-versa, considering the huge difference in personality when wearing the mask and not wearing the mask. Even a person who gets to know Sabrina may have a difficult time linking her secret identity to her hero face. Any blatant linking of this information will be labeled as meta-gaming and promptly ignored.
The Water Within
- Sabrina's powers manifested at the age of twelve, but even before they surfaced, she always had a strong affinity to water. Her parents always took the family out on the boat unless the water was too frozen to sail. She learned to swim at a very young age and getting her out of the pool as a child was an exercise in futility. She breezed through swimming lessons and became certified as a lifeguard at a very young age and seriously considered a career in Marine Biology.
- She discovered her powers three days after her twelfth birthday when she took her parents' boat out into the ocean. This was not particularly unusual, as her father taught her everything she needed to know about driving the boat. She often went out to the middle of nowhere and dropped anchor so she could read a book in true silence. This day, she did exactly that, and time melted away as it always did. It was almost too late when Sabrina noticed the clouds rolling in. The sky turned a terrifying green as the winds picked up. She had failed to check the news before leaving as Hurricane Nadine rocked the Atlantic and was sending storms their way.
- The tiny boat capsized and Sabrina was thrown into the water and giant waves. The force of the current was overwhelming and any regular person would have been washed away, but despite being sucked under, Sabrina seemed to have no problems breathing. She swam strongly to the surface and clung to the boat until the storm subsided. By the time the winds and water calmed, there was already a rescue party looking for her. She radioed for assistance and drove the boat back to the harbour.
- Sabrina explained to people who asked that the boat avoided the brunt of the storm and that she was all right, but had no explanation for the fact that she was NOT soaking wet or drenched. Her clothing, yes? Her skin, no. She was horribly confused by what had really happened and needed to further investigate. She had no idea what the reaction to her story would be; her friends and family would likely label her as insane and send her away for life, she figured.
- It took Sabrina a year of testing herself to become fully aware of her body, her powers, and exactly how they worked.
Water Works
- Sabrina's abilities are not limited to the ability to breathe under water and the ability for water to simply roll off of her. Her body thrives on moisture. If Sabrina was in a desert, she would have no special abilities, as the air would be far too dry. As long as there is water nearby or moisture in the air, she can condense this vapour into physical water.
- Sabrina uses a form of Tai Chi, combined with the physical manifestation of water, to fight criminals. Often times the water forces her foes to the ground and knocks them off their feet. Every scene she is at is left dripping wet.
- In addition to the obvious physical qualities of her attacks, her body constantly takes moisture from the air or nearby water sources to replenish itself. She loves the rain, as it is a constant refreshment for her.
- On days forecasted to be low humidity, Sabrina carries several bottles of water in her backpack to stay sharp and hydrated.
