Early Life

Young, foolish, and in love...I think we were all there at one point. Isaac Shields sure was.

In high school, he was the typical popular guy. Acing through JROTC and graduating after dating half the girls in the school, he went on to boot camp that summer and life looked good for him.

He arrived a year later to his assignment in the Middle East, one of about a hundred soldiers assigned to a desert outpost. At this point, he was engaged to one of the female soldiers that he had met in boot camp, and fortunately they ended up being assigned to the same base.

Gaining His Powers

Ellen Mitchell

One night, they went out with a small squad of about five other soldiers to investigate some strange, recurring signals they had been getting from a location in the open desert. About a mile out from the base, a geyser half a mile long suddenly awoke from its dormant state, frying half their team instantly. All that remained besides Isaac and his fiance Ellen was one soldier. They were trying to find the signal to radio back to base when the geyser opened again directly underneath Isaac and Ellen. They couldn't react fast enough - it burned them both.

However, the remaining soldier soon discovered that it was no ordinary geyser(of course not, geysers don't belong in deserts). A swarm of living rocks that we know as the Devouring Earth clambered out of the hole they had opened and killed the soldier, then scurried off toward the military base.

Meanwhile, Isaac and Ellen was not killed by the burst of heat and steam as their comrades were. Isaac survived, but the blast changed his body forever - he found that half his body had turned to brimstone. He could expel heat through the minute gaps in the stone crust of his skin, and he realized that with these two elements, he was now effectively a living volcano.

He saw the footprints of the Devouring Earth and knew that they had done this to him. He glanced at Ellen's body, made sure she was still alive, and took off at an earth-shaking sprint.

The Devouring Earth had almost destroyed the entire facility by the time he got there. He dispatched them quickly with his newfound abilities, but the soldiers remaining mistook him for another of the crazed golems. They fired at him, and, not wanting to hurt them, he was forced to run away.

He quickly went back to where he had left Ellen - but she was nowhere to be found, and the hole that the Devouring Earth had made was gone as well. He took off into the desert in a blinding rage as the soldiers approached his position.

Current Life

Eventually, he made his way back to the States, but he was already branded a war criminal, the military blaming him for what had happened to his comrades. Mutated and betrayed, he made his way to the only safe haven he could find - Paragon City. He now lives in Talos Island.

He has since found his way to other heroes like him - Mutants. Although the other heroes accept him, he has found that he is much more at home with others who share his tragedy of society's betrayal, and his since joined Maximilian Gold's personal team of mutant heroes, as well as his personal company, The Gold Corporation. All seven members of the team are part of the Midnighters as well, having once helped them develop a cure for the Lost.

He continues to fight unrelentingly, hoping that one day he will once again find the Devouring Earth that took his love from him...

Temporary Leave

Zeta during his training

After witnessing the death of Terry's close friend, he left Max and the other mutants for a time. During this hiatus from the Corporation, he retreated into the outskirts of the city to train vigorously on his own, as well as reflect on what had happened, as well as his own past.

After realizing what exactly had happened, and coming to terms with his own problems he'd had when teaming with Max before, he finally managed to overcome his weakness about his long-lost fiance. He still hoped to find her one day, but that goal was no longer the center of his person: protecting Paragon City was.

A few months later, he returned to the team, stronger than ever both physically and mentally.

Terrafall

Eventually, the group managed to track down Ellen's location, with the help of one of Zeta's old friends, Agent Omega, who now had his own powers. They fought their way deep into a Devouring Earth base, but just as they found her, Omega and Zeta were both struck with a strange thorn.

Omega managed to track down the minions who had taken her, and went on ahead while Zeta and the rest of the team followed behind later on. However, Zeta's powers had been disabled by the thorn in his body, turning his skin back into flesh. The team continued on, protecting him while fighting through the cave-base. When they again found Ellen, Zeta was shocked to find that a Master Shaper had been attempting to turn her into a full-fledged golem. They fought with the Shaper, but just as they were about to defeat him, Omega showed up with a squad of golems and attacked the team, the thorn in his body attempting to convert him into a Devouring Earth as well.

They subdued Omega and returned to the surface. Omega managed to remove the thorns from his and Zeta's body, returning Zeta's powers and his own will, but he insisted on staying behind due to his injuries. He did tell them where the Shaper was going now - Steel Canyon, to attack the city with the now golemfied Ellen at his side.

The team arrived in Steel Canyon and found a horde of Devouring Earth there. After fighting deep into the city, they found the Master Shaper sacrificing Ellen to the Hamidon to empower himself with unbelievable power. He succeeded, and mutated into a gigantic, towering monstrosity of a golem. The team fought with the beast, and with the help of Zeta's rage at the loss of Ellen, they were able to bring him down.

After the battle, Zeta had a long discussion with Omega and his friends from the Corporation.

He left a short while later, and has not returned ever since...
