Addam Smasher
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe
Addam was just an average guy, working 9-5 and trying to earn an honest living. He didn't have any aspirations of glory or being a hero, but one fateful day a pair of rival gangs started a brawl in the streets of the neighborhood where Addam was working, and a school bus full of kids got caught in the crossfire. Addam didn't even pause to think, he just took up the sledgehammer he was working with and fought his way to the bus, driving it and the injured driver to safety. The next day, it was all over the news about the "street hero" of Paragon City, and people began to take notice - including members of the two gangs he had busted up rescuing the bus. Madame Beauyea, a local neighborhood fortune teller and reputed voodoo priestess, keeps going on about "destiny" and "fate", but from Addam's point of view, he's just a guy with a knack for being in the wrong place at the right time.
In spite of his humble beginnings, Addam has achieved a considerable measure of fame and success on the streets of Paragon City. He was recruited into the superhero organization known as The Golden Mirror, and has been involved in a number of high profile situations including rescuing members of the Paragon City Council from an Arachnos hostage situation and working with a number of well known heroes, including Positron and Citadel of the Freedom Phalanx. Through it all, Addam has retained his down to earth, modest attitude, and has remained close to the regular citizens of Paragon City, being billed in the media as a "working class hero" and "man of the people". Recently, Addam even went up against members of the Cage Consortium in support of a Scrapyarder protest, demonstrating his empathy towards and roots amongst the working class. Ironically, it is Addam's "average Joe" approach to his own heroics that have brought him increased celebrity status with the media, who are all over the man who still thinks of himself as "that kid from the streets of King's Row". In a City of Heroes, where there are men and women wielding incredible powers in defense of the city and its citizens every day, the people of Paragon City have taken a keen interest in a man who chooses to fight the good fight with nothing more than his wits and an ordinary sledgehammer.
Even in the face of his numerous recent media and talk show appearances, Addam has kept himself fimly grounded, even going so far as to start teaching shop class at the University in Steel Canyon and working part time as a volunteer helping work with the city's youth, hoping to discourage them from being lured into the many street gangs and other criminal groups that plague the city streets. The combination of his street smart, easy going personality and newfound celebrity have made him extremely popular with the teens at the youth centre as well as with the students on campus, though some of the faculty and parents have expressed their fears and concerns that Addam's presence in these facilities may one day draw the attention of one of the many enemies he has made in keeping the city safe, possibly endangering the very people he seeks to help and protect.
