Origins

The following excerpts are from the journal of Harold LaMarr, P.h.D.

May 3, 2007

-Today we have come across a most peculiar finding. While in the middle of dating some broken artifacts we found, one of the diggers called me over. As the Translator explained to me, the digger and his team have dug into what seems to be a sealed off room. The diggers refuse to go any further; they claim that some things are meant to be left untouched, and that this room is one of those things. Superstitious fools. I decided that I will begin drilling into the chamber tomorrow.

May 4, 2007

-Today, before the digging began, Gerald gave me more insight into the site we were on. Apparently, he has done some inquiring to the locals, and gathered that this is the ruins of a Sphinx. More specifically, this particular sphinx was made in the image of Bast (A Cat-Goddess of war in ancient Egyptian culture). Nevertheless, I ordered Drilling to begin. The Material is more resilient than I thought. It seems to made of some Marble/Steel hybrid. It is unlike anything I have ever seen before.

-Drilling continues, but I had hoped to have penetrated the room by today. The closer we get to our prize, the more uneasy the locals seem to get. I asked Gerald to do some more research on the site. From what he gathered, and much to my surprise, the Sphinx fell into ruin only recently (If you consider around 1799 to be recent). The site had remained relatively untouched until Napoleon came though with his North African campaign. Local lore tells of "men in red" who came to the land, and made the Sphinx collapse in one single night. Perhaps I will find more than treasure in these mysterious ruins.

May 10, 2007

-At last, we entered the room! What I found was more than I ever could have imagined. Here I was expecting to find treasure, when instead what I found was some form of Cat-man. The creature was unconscious, and I had him immediately rushed to the medical tent of the site. Amazing, that after all these years, this man, despite his unconsciousness, he seems to be in perfect health.

May 13, 2007

-The man awoke today. He seemed calm, but at the same time very upset. Upon waking up, he quickly overpowered the two attendants in his panic, but somehow managed to leave them unharmed. He seems to possess both superior reflexes and strength. He claims his name his Cyril Bardou, and that he is part of the 13th Expeditionary Force in service of Napoleon Bonaparte. This is all terribly confusing. I tried to explain to him where he was, and he was much more accepting of his situation than I though he would have been. He tells me that he was part of an expedition team that was exploring the Sphinx. As he described it, the Sphinx had been in great condition. Through his research, he found the location of a secret antechamber inside the Sphinx. He divulged his findings to his superiors, but was angered at their decision completely excavate the site. He snuck into the Sphinx the night before the excavation began, and entered the antechamber by himself. He described the inside of the chamber to me, and went into great detail about a "white light" that he approached. In my opinion, this "white light" he described is a dimensional rift, much like the ones that we see at the famous Portal Corp. in Paragon City. Anyhow, he told me that when he approached the light, he was filled with an incredible power. He felt himself changing. But before he felt the energy leave him, he felt the presence of others, and blacked out. The next thing he knew, he was here, with us.

-While we may not have discovered the treasure I had hoped for, what we found instead is worth more than I could hope for. Seeing as how this is the site of a former homage to the Cat-Goddess Bast, I have decided to name our discovery Bastus. As the days go on, Bastus seems to be more and more depressed about his situation. The other day, I showed him to a mirror. His reaction wasn't violent, simply heartbreakingly depressing. He showed me a picture from his pocket today, a picture of him, standing next to a woman. He said that her name was Annette. I inquired about her further, but he told me that she was,” just a friend". I knew though, by the look on his face, that this Annette was far more than a friend. In an effort to change the subject, I asked him about his language. See, Bastus is a native of France, so it was strange to me that he was fluent in English. He told me that he had no idea what language he was speaking, he just simply trusted that the person he was speaking to would understand him.

-I would love to have our guest stay, but I cannot complain about what he has given us. When I told him of the recent developments in time-travelling, it seemed that his only intention was to head off to the famous Portal Corporation to find his way back to his time. I fear that his quest might be in vain, but I try to remain hopeful for him nonetheless.
