Becky Allen, aka the Benthic Avenger, has the power to channel the spirits of dead sea life. This is a totally awesome and not at all lame power, and she uses it to fight crime.

Affiliations
Benthic was deemed by Dawn Dancer as sufficiently shiny to become a junior member of the Brigands of Light. Some lady named Shadowstar keeps telling her to do stuff, even though she's tried to explain to her that she's not a warpshade or whatever she keeps saying. Of late, she's also been hanging out with the eternally depressed Angst-Bot, insisting that while he may be programmed to be sad all the time, he doesn't have to be, y'know, sad about it.
Personality
"Carpe Diem" are Benthic's watchwords. Her obsessive study of death and what lies beyond has not made her gloomy - on the contrary, she follows the advice of the Hagakure to keep death constantly in mind and thereby overcome fear of it. Every day that she is alive is a blessing and an opportunity, and when it ends it ends.
Benthic's twin loves are death and the deep ocean, and she will happily rattle off an endless stream of obscure trivia on either subject (or both) until told it's time to stop.
Powers
Deep Channeler
Benthic's mystic connection to the endless ocean of the afterlife allows her to channel the power of the spirits of deep sea creatures. This includes:
- Manifesting a ghostly squid which spits bursts of ethereal ink (while Benthic can be heard, as from a great distance, saying "Ptoo! Ptui! Ptew!").
- Manifesting a dread Claw Shrimp, a primordial deep-sea creature with an iron-hard carapace and pinchy claws.
- Summoning the Abyssal Tide, a wave of darkness that hurls enemies back and stuns them.
- Calling forth the souls of millions of plankton, who form a cloudy mass that lashes out with beams of ectoplasmic force.
- Opening a gate directly to the Abyss, releasing a massive wave of darkness from the endless ocean
Abilities
Ocean Knowledge
Benthic had a marine biology phase the way most kids have a dinosaur phase - and she never grew out of hers, even as her interests moved on to the realm of the dead.
Kickass Costume Making
Benthic made her costume herself, from $56 in materials bought at the Halloween Supply Outlet. She's very proud of it.
Weaknesses and Limitations
Benthic is, in the end, only human. Furthermore, her necromancy extends only to deep sea creatures - she might be able to summon other spirits if she tried, but her mother has told her not to in no uncertain terms.
Equipment
Kickass Costume
It's the best costume that $56 can buy.
Character History
Becky Allen never was a very girly girl. She lived on Talos Island with her mother, the owner and proprietor of Allen Bait & Tackle, and spent all her free time either reading or splashing around on the beach, looking for weird animals. She didn't much take to the cliques of public school, eventually filtering into the goth crowd due to her interest in spiritualism and her severe disinterest in ordinary ("booooring") people.
In any other town this interest would be a harmless diversion, but in Paragon City it's all too easy for a motivated teenager to get her hands on genuine books of necromancy, and Becky was very motivated. Her mother tolerated her studies up to the point when she discovered Becky in a trance, floating above her bed, her eyes glowing with ethereal light. Feet were put down, laws were laid down, and Becky was made to understand that dabbling in the dark arts was not going to be tolerated in the Allen household. This provoked a sulk of epic proportions, which ended in a compromise: Becky could continue to study the world beyond, but only under supervision from a tutor, only with benign ends, and never to channel the souls of intelligent beings.
Thus Becky began to receive weekly tutoring from Peter Stemitz on the ins and outs of proper channeling. Eventually Peter deemed her strong enough to rise to her true calling: fight crime with the power of the deep! And thus, one trip to the seasonal novelty store later, the Benthic Avenger was born.
