Blindfate
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe
Affiliation
Blindfate started his own supergroup, Fate's Warning.
Personality
Cold, sarcastic, but oddly enough, sometimes funny...His demeanor is a reflection of his inner conflicts. Incredibly corageous, sometimes bordering on foolhardy, his passion for his “job” can sometimes get the best of him, but likewise, makes him a feared combatant.
Story
From what's little known from him, Hauer had a normal childhood until he reached his teenage years. The son of an influential industrialist in the weapons and defense field, he had a privileged childhood and was destined to follow the steps of his father.
Unfortunately this ideal life didn't last long; unknown to his family, greed got the best of Blindfate's father, who started dealing and supplying technology and materials to high members of the criminal underground. But after a couple of deals gone wrong, he regretted his actions, but it was too late...
On a quiet November night, the fantastic mansion where Hauer's family lived was invaded by what seemed to be sadistic criminal members of some sort of gang. No regular gangsters these—they had extraordinary powers and skills, being able to shoot fire from their bare hands, rocks, even ice!
The invaders were merciless, killing the mansion's staff and security, until they reached Blindfate's family...And then it seemed the plan changed. After almost killing Hauer's parents, the group's leader decided on a different way to avenge his Master. He picked up Hauer, who was hiding behind a large, toppled dinner table, and raised him up in the air by his jacket.
Not saying a word, but with an evil smile, the leader of the gang raised his other hand, put it over Hauer's eyes, and the last thing the poor boy felt was an intense cold as shards of ice pierced his eyes. The gangster ordered a retreat, leaving the house with Hauer still in his grip.
Hauer was found in the middle of Death Valley, almost dead, by an old Japanese man who wandered the inhospitable terrain by night. He called himself Shisou, and he took care of Hauer, helping him recover from his wounds, and afterwards teaching him how to deal with his new life as a blind man.
Shisou went beyond, though. He taught Hauer how to channel his chi to be aware of his surroundings, and how to fight enemies with this newfound power. Even Shisou was amazed at the kids innate ability to channel this energy, to the point where Hauer was able to use the katana in a skillful and deadly way, and protect himself of attacks by amplifying the natural electricity of his body to amazing levels.
Throughout those years living near the desert, training by night, Hauer always wondered why Shisou helped him? Did he know who he was? What was he looking for? He never got to ask those questions out of respect for his caretaker and mentor, though, and made himself forget about it when the doubts arised.
But those questions came back one day when Shisou gave Hauer a letter written in Braille. The letter mentioned that the answers he seeks were in a city far away called Paragon City. He remembered his father mentioning that city, and he felt a sudden chill in his bones. The letter concluded with this:
“Be strong, my child. Remember, Fate is blind, inscrutable, and inescapable.”
As he read those last words, Hauer sensed that he was completely alone. All that was left of Shisou was his venerable katana. He felt fear, but also an odd sense of fulfillment--he knew his purpose in life now.
And he was going to create his own fate.
