History
Early Life
There really isn't much to say about Ian's childhood. Of Irish descent, he grew up in a small town in Nova Scotia with his parents and siblings. Like others his age, he went to school, hung out with friends, and heard the stories about the adventures of heroes in the cities of the world, but especially Paragon City. From a very young age, Ian was always enthralled by everything to do with superheroes, an interest which he would carry later on in life.
Arrival in Paragon
Years later, Ian was finishing up his history Masters in university when he got a call from MAGI. Despite being in a fairly straight forward field, Ian had applied his childhood interest to it and had specialized in the history of the arcane. Mystic artifacts and the like. MAGI had gotten their hands on one of many papers he had written on the topic and, seeing his potential, offered him a job. A few weeks later, he was on his way to Paragon City at last.
From there, things went well for quite a while. For all the difficulties in the city, Ian settled fairly well. He managed to avoid any trouble as well as any civilian, though the threat of the gangs was always in the back of his mind. Over with MAGI he was assigned to work at the local museum, assisting with a continent of other MAGI officials who dealt with the identification, preservation and study of any artifacts deemed "of interest". It was while acting in this capacity that it happened.
The Event
2 years later, Ian was working late again, absorbed in his work, as he was oft to do. Absentmindedly he waved off the last of his collegues as they departed for the night. In the silence of the darkened museum, he continued his observations of an unsual artifact, a small statuette, that they had recived the day before. MAGI mystics could sense a latent magical force within it, but as of yet there was no indication of what it did. Always one for a good mystery, Ian took it upon himself to solve it. After yet another search for information through the museum's database provided no results, Ian let out a long sigh in frustration. Lifting up the small statue, he looked deep into the tiny figure's face. "You are proving to be very troublesome. Do you know that?" he said to it, not expecting a response. However, a response is exactly what he got. The statuette exploded.
As morning rolled around, Ian groggilly came to on the floor of the lab. The statuette was sitting pretty on a table a short way from him. Grabbing his temples, he sat up as he struggled to remember what had occured last night. It suddenly arrived to him in a flash, along with significantly more. His mind flooded with information from the statuette, information of a hidden power. As he slowly caught his breath after the sudden headrush, he raised a hand before him. Snapping his fingers, he let out a loud laugh as a bright sphere of light appeared in the palm of his hand.
Over the next few weeks, Ian better learned to control his new found power with the help of both MAGI and GIFT. As it turns out, the statuette did not grant Ian any power, but mearly acted as a catalyst activating an inate power that he possesed all along.
Ian still works at the museum, though it is only part-time now, or when they really need his expertise. The majority of his time is now devoted to a little hobby of his that he'd been hoping to get into for quite a while.

Personality
Brass Lantern has always been identified as an intelligent individual. He has a deep curiosity about the world around him, which in turn gives rise to his love of mysteries, something which is by no means in short supply in his field of work. Generally level-headed, he is still capable of unwinding and letting loose when the time calls for it. On the other side of things, he is capable of becomming very, very wrathfull to those who provoke him sufficently. This is rare however and most of the time, even when in combat, he will maintain a calm, playful, if a bit condescending, exterior.
Motivation
In addition to the simple thrill of heroing, Ian takes up the mantle of The Brass Lantern because he trully belives that it is the right thing to do. He knows that with his powers he can make a phenomenal difference in Paragon City for many people who may have otherwise been lost. He was always taught that although everyone needs to learn to stick up for themselves at some point or another, sometimes they need an example first, and those who are able to lift them up are duty-bound to do so.
Powers
|
The Brass Lantern is capable of generating powerfull electro-magnetic fields at will. These fields have a variety of potential uses. The one that he makes the greatest use of is energizing the air around his hands to create the energy bolts that he utilizes to combat villany. Another use he recently stumbled upon, to his delight, is flight. He's still not entirely sure how it works, but that's just another mystery that need solving. |
