Melissa lived a pretty normal life before becoming a hero. The most eventful year of her life before becoming a hero was when her brother was born and the family moved to Sacramento, California. At this point, Melissa was 13, and she remained in Sacramento until she was 18, when she moved out to go to college. Even then, her life was uneventful. After four years of college, she decided that she'd gotten apt education and moved to Paragon to try and become a hero, something she'd dreamed about for most of her life. At this point she had no powers, and was hero-ing with a limited amount of Karate training. Of course, she was destined to be killed or at least injured pretty horribly that way, but she was approached by a representative of Portal Corps before that happened.
