In 1878, Malthus Neville stumbled upon a collection of pitched notes capable of destroying the barrier between worlds. Of course, he didn't realize it at the time, he just liked how the pond at his country house rippled when he played it at night. It would be followed by a year of vigorous experimentation, first changing it from breaking down the surface tension of water, to the bonds of attraction between bits of matter, and quite suddenly to his surprise, the fabric of reality that keeps the outside from coming in. His surprise cost the lives of his household servants, two groundsmen, his wife Martine, and ultimately a small cabal of disgraced clergymen and spiritualists. At the end of the ordeal, Malthus was left looking down at the nearly imperceptible remains of an alien intelligence, shattered like layer upon layer of black glass across the floor.

It is said that Malthus sealed those fragments inside a music box from among his deceased wife's possessions and buried it within the Earth. That is what is said.

What isn't said is why some hear the playing of the music box in current day, when it should be long lost, deeply buried. Why is definitely not spoken of... but they hear it anyway. The howling beyond the wall, calling them to be its eyes, ears, and hands.
