Introduction
The Crey security guard walked through the sticky, summer night like he had countless times before. He wasn't alone. Tonight would be the first night that his partner worked for Crey Industries. The two turned the corner, coming to the Devouring Earth containment units. The superior officer showed the rookie the access code. The door unlocked, a rush of cool air hit the two men as the door cracked. Suddenly, a power failure caused the metal door to stop in its tracks, only have traveled a few inches. The two men looked at each other with a puzzled look on their faces. At the end of the dark hallway, two tiny orbs of light illuminated a feminine frame, the face smiling devilishly.
The men were quick to report the break in over the radio. When only static responded, they knew they were alone against whatever was at the end of the corridor. Drawing their weapons, they quickly began to force the door open. Once able to squeeze through, the globes of light disappeared, along with a clear shot at the girl. They two guards began firing into the darkness, the spark from the end of their gun barrels gave tiny flashes. In the brief bursts of light, they saw the girl, appearing harmless in a constricting white t-shirt and tight blue jeans, arms crossed across her chest as she stood there. As for the bullets, thick vines came from the ground, taking the hits that were suppose to stop the girl in her tracks.
The guards emptied their clips, and once they began to reload, the young girl took the opportunity and the vines darted towards the men. The guns were slapped from their hands as the vines were quick and delicately bound them around their wrists, ankles, and mouth. It appeared the teen had no intentions of harming them whatsoever at this point. Unable to speak, the only sounds the two men heard were the steady clicking of her shoes as she walked towards them and horrific cries of the Devoured as she passed.
Each step she took, small patches of grass broke through the concrete floors, more thorny vines erupting from the ground. Each one penetrated through the cells' hinges, causing the doors to fall to the ground with a heavy thud. When she stopped inches from the two men, her hands glowed once more, giving them a clear look of her short, ebony locks, angelic face, and piercing crystal stare.
She raised the glowing hands to cup both guards' face, the various specimens of the Devouring Earth now lumbering into the hallways. She noticed one of the guards shaking uncontrollably as lips puckered, a soft 'shhhh' escaped. Eyes then look towards the senior security officer, that wicked smiling coming back over her face. "No more." was all she said, before leaning in, giving the man a soft kiss on the lips. In an instant, the man's eyes rolled into the back of his head, the whites of his eyes turning a deep green.
Sultry eyes turned back to the new recruit as she leaned in, about to kiss him, holding her lips dangerously close to his. "Free the Devoured Earth or else." she told him as the vines released him, letting him fall hard onto the floor. She took a step back, sitting on a vine behind her. It embraced her gently as it began to pull her back down the hallway, past all the now free Devoured creations. The other vines plowed through the thick wall leading outdoors. Out the hole she went, alarms unable to sound, the Devoured Earth following obediently behind her. Once the last one exited through the large gap, the lights flickered and power slowly came back on. No trace of the girl, or the Devoured Earth, remained.
Background
Spoiler Warning: Events listed below are the secrets Jennifer has kept to herself.
Jennifer was always the environmental activist. Surprisingly, she made P.E.T.A look like a little child in comparison to her deeds. But she wasn't always this way.
A scholar at Aeon University, it was no suprise that Ms. Ackland was a hermit, shunned from society for her academics. It didn't bother her, for you see, Jennifer liked to study witchcraft in Vagabond Hills. She'd frequent the forests behind the university quite often, carrying her books and back pack of ingredients with her. It was her sanctuary for most of her freshman year.
Jennifer seemed to be doing well, both in her studies, and her witchcraft. But, one fateful night while deep in the forest, Jennifer fell victim to the mindless deforestation. Not knowing the girl was there, a bulldozer pushed over 3 trees right on top of Jennifer. Pinned, and scared for her life as the bulldozer pushed its way towards Jennifer, she recited a spell she knew she dare not speak. In an instant, vines shot from the ground and tore the bulldozer to pieces.
When she arouse off the ground, Jennifer was no longer the sweet innocent college student. No, she had invoked a spell to summon a demon to save her from the bulldozer. What she didn't expect was for the demoness, who called herself Cex, to possessed her body.
Though Jennifer was delighted that the bulldozer didn't kill her, Cex was even more excited that she had escaped Hell. The two personalities conflicted at first, but when Jennifer confessed to Cex that she was angry about losing her forest, Cex offered to make sure that it didn't happen. With the demoness' power, Cex laid waste to the demolition equipment in the surrounding area with little difficulty.
Cex didn't stop there. Once the threat seemed to be nuetralized, she quickly forced Jennifer to continue their deadly campaign of conservation. The more Cex destroyed, the more Jennifer seemed to enjoy it. But all good things must come to an end. The demoness soon grew tired of having to share the same body as Jennifer. Once she was powerful enough, Cex seperated herself from Jennifer. As thanks for liberating Cex from Hell, she gave Jennifer a small amount of her power.
Jennifer wasn't about to stop the undertaking the two had started. The rush was too enjoyable to stop now. Alas, the power Cex had left her was less than be desired. That didn't stop Jennifer from trying to find other ways to fuel her mission. One day, while breaking into a small Crey lab, she found some Devoured Earth research. This gave her an idea.
For weeks, she studied a sample of rock taken from a dead Bedrock she found while out in Nerva. Finally, she was able to find the connection the Devoured had with the Earth. This substance, which was called the Essence of the Earth, was slightly altered by Jennifer. After a few minor set backs, Jennifer had successfully found a way for her to harness the Essence of the Earth, enhancing her plant control ablities to unimaginable heights! The vendetta was back on schedule, Jennifer was ready to wreck havoc on those who threatened the environment once again. Her next target....Crey!
Complications
The edge of the forest looked like the front line of a war. Dawn broke on the horizon as the loggers showed up for their shifts. Hundreds of men climbed into their bull dozers and picked up their chain saws. In unison, they walked and rolled past thousands of stumps to the forest edge. It is there they stopped, the army mounted and readied their weapons for today's battle, moving into lines and await the order to advance. On the other side of the battle ground, the forest flourished. The only sign that man had set foot under the canopy of leaves was a single greenhouse. The roof had been compromised. Moss had began to cover the glass walls, preventing anything from seeing in. One would pass the greenhouse and think no more, unless that day was today. For today, dozens of Devouring Earth, towering beasts made out of rock, some made of grass, scratching patches of moss away.
The Devouring Earth were the reason the loggers had stopped the past few days, the reason the loggers stood by the forest edge awaiting further orders. Back at the greenhouse, the creatures had little success breaking through to the inside of the greenhouse. When the structure was jeopardized , thick vines would shoot out, violently attacking the monsters, forcing them away.
If one were able to see past the thick crowd of Devouring Earth, and managed to peek inside, they would find a young woman. Dressed in an oversized lab coat, she frantically ran back and forth between multiple Bunsen burners, glass tubing and beakers in sneakers. "Way to go Jenny, wait until the last minute! Stupid!" she cursed to herself.
When she heard a glass break, her charcoal colored hair would twirl around her face as she spun to find where the facility had been compromised. Once found, she'd raise her hand to the broken glass. She concentrated those beady blue eyes at the ground beneath. After a few tedious seconds, another vine would erupt. It flew through the broken glass to push the abomination back.
The sleeve of her lab coat pulled across her sweaty forehead, as she let out a sigh of relief. Turning away from the burners, she came to a counter that she turned into an examination table. There, lay a dead Devoured grass underling. Jenny, in haste, grabbed the scalpel and began to cut open the small creatures chest. The teenager tried desperately to focus as the cries from outside would crescendo. Once the sternum was cut by the blade, fingers dug in. Jenny forcefully exposed the organs. Wiping the green secretions off on her lab coat, she picked up a syringe near the examination table.
Hands shook uncontrollably. Her mind focused not only on her syringe's target, but keeping those defensive vines from letting the Devouring Earth in. As one hand called forth her defenders, the other hand shifted organs out of the way until she found the heart of the creature. Moving it aside, she saw the two tiny glands and in haste, picked up the syringe and quickly stabbed one of the creature's glands. Thumb pulled back, extracting the black liquid out of the creature's gland.
The urgency of the situation had Jenny back to the Bunsen burners in a flash. The contents of the syringe were squirted into a beaker full of a bubbling red liquid. After using the syring to mix the two ingredients together, she went back to the examination table to grab a much larger needle off of her tray. Slowly, the two contents mixed into a green serum.
As she made her way back over to the beaker, a major breach occurred. The vines had failed and the Devouring Earth started to make their way inside. Shards of glass showered down as the Devoured roared in triupmh. With pieces falling all around her, Jenny dipped the large needle into the green mixture. The girl filled the empty cylinder with the concoction. Tucking the burning liquid into her lab coat pocket to cool, she tried to escape down the row of potted plants to the exit.
The blundering creatures gave chase. Jenny thought she escaped until a beam from the ceiling crashed in front of the exit. Frantic, she turned around, facing dozens upon dozens of these horrifying creatures. As they closed the gap between them, Jenny cowered in fear behind a tipped desk. She knew the end was near. There was no way they would show mercy, not after what she did to them all. The beasts were inches from her now, and the brute strength from one of them tossed her across the room with one slap.
Dazed and confused, she felt a sharp pain in her hip. Looking down, she saw the needle penetrating her hip. "Not my arm, but it'll do," she told herself. Her thumb pushed the green liquid into her body. Eyes winced in pain as the seering fluid entered her body.
The angry beasts turned towards her, ready to go in for the kill. Their cries for justice echoing as the greenhouse crashed around all of them. As they approached, their pace slowed, swaying back and forth. Then, once again they lumbered towards Jenny, but this time, with different intentions.
Slowly, the juvenile stood up, dusting herself off. Those green eyes glowed with power. "Stop them." the youthful voice said without hesitation. Obediently, the Devouring Earth turned and headed into the forest, leaving the building to collapse atop of Jenny.
"All right men, let's go to work!" The foreman yelled. The rumble of chain saws and motors filled the morning air. The loggers looked at the other with uncertainty in their eyes. When one bull dozer driver bravely pushed forward, he would be met with a towering rock monster! With ease, the machine was flipped. The forest edge now lined with hundreds of Devoured Earth. Soon the sounds of machine was replaced with the screams of man, but soon after the forest was silent...
A Villain is Born
With the Devouring Earth syrum finally perfected, Jennifer took the alias Cex back. It was only suitable, seeing Cex was the one who started it all. With this newfound power, she was through fighting the small fishes. It was time to go for the big one. Countess Crey, look out. Your enemy now has a name, and that name is Cex!
