Natalia Kuroshnova was an orphan in the northern Russian city of Murmansk. Growing up in an orphanage was bad enough with out having an natural aversion to the cold of the region. The Russian military routinely tested orphans for special skills. One such test involved meta-human testing. The SOBR (soviet rapid responce unit) had started a new program that found these children and conducted secret experiments on them to boost latent powers. When Natalia tested positive for possible energy powers, it was an understatement. When subjected to the experimental drugs, her powers blossomed. At first she could not control them and killed 4 scientists and 3 soldiers when she uncontrollably went nova. The SOBR technicians secluded her in a controlled environment and kept her partially sedated until she could control herself. The SOBR leaders thought they had found what they were looking for; a living weapon. They had already had success with the cyborg Redstar as well as the quasi-magikal twins, Scythe and Hammer, and the natural meta-human Great Bear, but their powers were not on the scale of Natalie's. She joined the new team of meta-humans with the code name Crimson Fury. The team proved successful, but she was young and her powers were still developing. With the fall of the Soviet Union came reorganization, which included the military. The SOBR was dismantled and replaced. The meta-human section was disbanded. This posed a problem for the government. They couldn't allow meta-humans with military training to join the populace. The SOBR commander, Colonel Nikolai, took it upon himself to secret the metas as his own personal hit squad. As they eventually found out their commanders true intentions, as well as the command from the KGB to 'destroy the evidence' of their existence, the group fled. They ended up each going separate ways. Natalia managed to use black market contacts from the SOBR's heyday to get passage to the US with proper documents and joined the masses of heroes in Paragon City to start a new life.
