The Cards of Fate
The Tower
Cecilia was born in Laval, a large city named after the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Quebec. The first six years of her childhood passed with fond memories of her family and the quiet life they shared. She went to school, had friends, and enjoyed the simple pleasures of youth. It seemed perfect, like a little girls dream. But like all dreams, this to would come to an end. It was fall, the air had cooled and seasonal trees had changed from green to brilliant reds and yellows. Cecilia had just turned seven and was in the back yard playing in the leaves with Tamara, the girl from next door who baby sat when her parents were out. This was her favorite time of year, when the world seemed to transform around her. It was like magic. But then the phone call came baring terrible news that would end it all. The official report said that her parents had lost control of their car which slid off the road and down a hill where it crashed into some trees. The accident was fatal and removed the only family Cecilia had ever known. Amidst the chaos of her life at this dark time emerged a man by the name of Alexander Ried. He was Cecilia’s uncle and guardian who had flown to Laval the moment the news of his sisters death had reached him. She was placed in his care and after her parents funeral they left Canada and returned to Alexander’s home in Paragon City.
The Hermit
The man Cecilia came to know as her uncle was a stern old man, many years older than her mother and as cold and emotionless as stone. Over the years they lived together she would rarely see him as most of his time was consumed with work. He was an established scholar of arcane sciences and member of a group known as the Midnighters. Filling the void between them was Elaine, Cecilia’s nanny. Elaine was a beautiful young woman with a quick wit and infectious smile. The two quickly became good friends and for the first few years they were every close. As Cecilia grew into her teens she was officially inducted into the Midnighters, a decision more or less forced on her by her uncle. Although Cecilia didn’t completely understand her uncle or the order, she didn’t feel like she could trust them. A feeling made stronger when she learned that Elaine was also a member but had never told her. This came as a surprising reality check and reinforced Cecilia suspicions about her uncle and the group she was now a part of. When she began to manifest supernatural powers shortly thereafter, Cecilia’s immediate reaction was to blame the Midnighters and her uncle. A belief that drove her to run away in an attempt to free herself from her uncles mysterious order and the magic within her.

Despite her heroic persona and bold personality Cecilia tends to be cautious and slightly withdrawn from others. A trait that has helped keep her life as a college student separate from being a supernatural heroin and Midnighter. But this often creates a wall that very few can pass making it hard at times for others to relate to her. At her worst, feelings of being misunderstood and detached from people can make her cold, jealous, and resentful. More often however, Cecilia’s strong personality allows her to tackle most situations with energetic determination. She can be very passionate and forceful about what she believes in which can cause her to be bull headed or obsessive at times. But it also makes her a relentless and intimidating force for good against the villains of Paragon City.

College
Cecilia attends Steel Canyon Community College as a student of applied arts. Outside of class she can be found volunteering at the library or around campus working for the school paper. Those within her social circle typically share simple interests that allow Cecilia to easily divide her civilian life from everything else. Out of everyone at SCC, only one other student knows the full extent of Cecilia‘s secrets. During her first year at the school she got involved with a boy named Emesto. Even though they had little to nothing in common the two become very close. He was her first and only serious boyfriend who has remained a loyal friend even after their relationship came to an end. Despite her efforts for secrecy there are members of the school faculty that are aware of her family ties to the Midnighters. Luckily, the mysterious nature of the order and status her uncle holds has been enough to keep rumours to a minimum. Even with this knowledge in limited circulation she has never been approach by any of her peers or suffered any kind of backlash from it.

Powers & Abilities
Reaching into Oblivion
Cecilia is capable of tapping into an internal source of supernatural power that allows her to manipulate and even conjure pure darkness. This is more than a simple absence of light however, as she is able to draw forth actual mass into her shadow constructs. Appearing as black mist, this magical darkness is very cold when in contact with exposed skin and can act as a conduit for spiritual energy. Prolonged use of these powers has a number of side effects, the least of which include head aches and an unshakable chill. In extremely rare cases, Cecilia can weaken to a state where the shadow spirit bound to her powers will take over often resulting in short episodes of possession. This leaves her so physically drained that she often becomes sick and needs a day or two for recovery.

- Through subtle manipulation of shadows, she can become difficult to see allowing her to pass unnoticed.
- By channelling life energy to and from living targets, she can cause or heal physical injury.
- Increasing the density of the mist allows her to snare or slow her enemies in pools of darkness.
- Able to summon a shadow spirit. The shade communicates through an empathic bond and will fight to protect her.
- ~ Ice Blast ~
- By greatly magnifying the density of her shadow constructs she can form crystalline objects. These glassy purple constructs are brutally cold and form the bulk of her offensive abilities. Although sharing similar traits to ice, it is in fact super-solid negative matter and dissolves into shadow leaving no trace.

Subversive Content
I reference some mystical systems, and Greek mythology in this characters background as a way of adding substance to the story. But given my limited knowledge on the subject matter I chose to keep things simple and minimize the amount of research I needed to support the character. Thus, I decided to focus on the very basics of Tarot and the Zodiac as a source of inspiration. My goal was (and still is as I continue to write..) to provide a sense of real world mysticism to her story the reader can relate to.
I understand some people might find these things offensive, so I've placed the "subversive" warning in the character box. Thanks for reading.
