Darkestrike (a.k.a. Samuel Temple) is a magic-user who has made a name for himself in Paragon City and other places for his powerful magical abilities, especially for his knowledge -- and skills fighting against -- demons.
He owns and lives in a large building in the southwestern part of Founder's Falls.

Affiliations
Darkestrike is the founder of Nova Watch. While he oversees the group, the day-to-day operations are in the hands of Domina Pyra. Through Nova Watch, he is allied with AFAR and The Sodality in what is called the Renascent Alliance.
Both Dottie Quinn and Sylanna live in Darkestrike's building.
Physical appearance
Darkestrike is quite tall for a human, and well-muscled. He has shoulder-length red hair, and an impeccably trimmed goatee. He has piercing blue eyes, an angular face and a smooth, deep voice, though his most distinctive physical characteristic is his blue skin. This strangely-tinted skin is a "curse" from a demon (see History, below), a mark left upon him. Some think he possesses the magical ability to undo the curse, but when he is asked about his skin, he often replies that it is "a reminder" to avoid becoming too prideful.
He is most frequently seen dressed in suits of excellent workmanship, though he occasionally wears more "casual" outfits of slacks, a button-down shirt and vest. When he is "on duty," he normally clothes himself in a long, black trenchcoat, cowl and fedora.
Personality
Darkestrike has a reputation (well-earned, some would say) for being stern and aloof. His mannerisms are often quite formal.
He holds a particular dislike for the Circle of Thorns, primarily for their arrogance and greediness in increasing their own magical powers, without concern for consequence.
Main powers
Darkestrike's magical abilities are widely varied, as he has learned to channel them in myriad ways. When he is in combat, however, he primarily channels his magic into powerful blasts of magical force and electrical discharge.

Alternate powers
He has recently begun learning to create and manipulate both illusions and weather forces. In order to use his abilities for these new purposes, he must perform a small ritual. This prevents him from using his magic as he is must accustomed.
In this state he lacks the sheer destructive power, but is growing progressively more powerful as he grows more familiar with these new talents.

Other abilities/skills
Through tutelage under Gidget Fusion, Darkestrike has become a formidable psychic.
History
Before arrival in Paragon City
Early life
Darkestrike was raised in comfort and luxury, the son of a wealthy family somewhere in the Midwest. While he had no lack for material possessions, there was an aloofness and emotional distance from his parents.
When he was young, he showed an interest and talent in the arts, specifically music. Unbeknownst to many, including his family and most of his close friends, he also had an innate talent for magic.
College years
While attending college, he met someone who claimed to be part of a "circle" of practitioners of magical arts.
Putting aside what few fears he had about what could happen to himself, he delved deeply into an intoxicating and often dark and dangerous world.
He was initially careful with how he used his nascent powers, but that changed. His experiments grew bolder, as did his power -- and his ambition for more.
Despite these new destructive impulses, he formed tight bonds with several members of this circle, and they worked together on dark, powerful magicks. They all hungered for more – undoubtedly that is what spurred them to perform the summoning.
The Summoning
It’s a commonly held belief amongst magical practitioners, with some basis in fact, that summoning some being from a nether plane can yield great rewards. Those rewards vary –influence over others, riches, the fulfillment of desires, but there are constants.
It is always dangerous, and there is always a price.
Samuel and his friends gathered late on a November evening to begin the incantation to summon what they considered to be a demon perfectly suited to their needs. It worked.
None of them, however, were prepared for what happened next.
The demon appeared, and almost immediately broke through the warding spells meant to keep it in check. It tore into the mind of one of Samuel’s friends and within seconds, left her mind a wasted wreck. The demon passed from person to person and, despite resistance, destroyed four minds before finally reaching Samuel.
Even to this day, he isn't certain how he managed to fend off the worst of the demon's attacks. The demon's violent intrusion into his mind left him almost mad, but Samuel was able to rally every last shred of his power and send the demon back to the plane from which it came.
When he finally awoke, nearly delirious, he saw his friends splayed on the floor, insensate and ruined. Records indicated the other four members of that circle remained in comas for some months, but later died.
As he recovered, the sheer horror of what had happened sank in, and he resolved to never use his powers for such selfishly destructive purposes again. He packed a few of his belongings and left town.
He remained haunted for many years by the memory of his lost friends, and searched not only for a new purpose in his life, but for redemption for what he had done.
There were still nights he would awake screaming.
