Darned Cat
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe
Suspect Coded Name: D0117
Suspect Aliases: DC, Darned Cat
Suspected Crimes: Arson(8 counts), Auto Theft(16 counts), Trespass(multiple reports)
Physical description: White with brown cat ears and a tail. 149 centimeters tall. Probable mutant or escapee from an illegal genetics lab.
Psychological profile: D0117 is fickle, careful, methodical in the commission of crimes as there is never any physical evidence linking her to any major crimes. Follows is a report by Officer 375068 (deceased) which may reveal some characteristics.
“This officer was called to the scene of a fire to assist fire department arson investigators. The fire was a high-rise office complex/warehouse at 4117 Largo Way. While the fire was in the process of being brought under control, this officer scanned likely vantages within 1 mile, using night-vision binoculars and found suspect atop a high-rise about 900 meters from the site of the fire. This officer proceeded to the subject building at 817 17th Ave. and gained access to the roof with the aid of the janitorial staff. This officer then approached the suspect surreptitiously and observed that the individual was facing AWAY from the fire, unlike most arsonists who would want to see their handiwork. Suspect appeared to be enjoying the breeze caused by the fire's sucking in air from all directions. This officer placed suspect under arrest for trespass and removed her from the scene, summoning Officer 434253 to assist arson investigators. Suspect did not request an attorney when read her rights from a Miranda card by Officer 349317 in this officer's presence, and agreed to answer questions voluntarily.
When asked why she was on the building at 817 17th Ave, suspect replied that she wanted to feel the wind on her face. When asked about the fire, she giggled and said she noticed it from seeing her jumping shadow. When pressed for more information about the fire, she hunched over in her posture and spoke slowly, as if through clenched teeth. “Leave me alone. I must be free.” Officer 434253 called in confirmation that the fire was arson, with evidence of an accelerant oxidizer and fuel. When suspect was presented with this evidence, and it was suggested that we would soon be able to link her to the crime by this officer, she smiled and said, “Then I suppose you had better put me in jail.” She laughed, giggled and almost purred, showing no fear and admitting nothing. At this point, this officer decided extreme measures were necessary and asked Officer 349317 to stay with the suspect, then to take her to the corridor next to the holding cells where there are no cameras. This officer then departed to mask his identity.
In the corridor, this officer appeared and began a systematic beating of suspect while Officer 349317 suggested that the beating would stop when we had a confession. Suspect appeared to fold in on herself, into a fetal position, and to hiss that the bunny would be paid back. After 12 minutes, with no confession forthcoming, suspect was given paper towels and escorted to a holding cell. Officer 349317 noted that an old man in the adjoining cell dressed suspect's wounds through the bars.”
D0117 was arraigned the following day for trespass and released on her own recognizance. She fled the jurisdiction and never appeared for trial. No pursuit was elected by the court, and none from the Department as we had used extralegal means of interrogation. Officer 375068 complained of tiredness and went home early, and did not appear for duty the next day. A routine check on his health found him dead in his apartment. The coroner suggested extreme and premature aging as the cause of death, saying his internal organs appeared to be those of an octogenarian. It is also worthy of note that the indigent in the cell next to her appeared very much younger in his release photographs. It is not known if this is corollary to contact with D0117.
D0117 has been linked to several auto thefts where a young woman with cat ears has been observed joyriding in sports car convertibles at high speeds. The abandoned cars never have any physical evidence, and officers have never been close enough to the muscle cars to make a positive identification. Suspect D0117 may be the perpetrator, or it may be a person unknown of similar physical size with a disguise.
Arson investigators have noted that thefts occurred from the buildings where the fires were set. No fences have reported dealing in any of the stolen items, so there may be some way of connecting D0117 to the unsolved arsons.
D0117 has no known residence. Family history is absent. Psychology suggests early trauma or torture. It is not known whether D0117 can be salvaged as a productive member of society, or whether she is actually without conscience. D0117 has been observed from time to time presenting food to street people and even assisting those with limited vision or mobility. It is unclear what compensation D0117 may receive in return, if any.
