Footnotes
Demetra is generally drunk off wine. She can be rude and crude but isn't too hard to get along with. Just don't call her "sweetie"

Origins

Demetra was born during the height of the Neoclassical period, also known as the Greek Revival period. It was a time when the classical Greek art, architecture, and festivities returned to the mortal world. And of course, this meant that the great and festive parties of the god of wine, Dionysus, would return. And they did, with a bang. Lots of wine, lots of women and men, lots of fun and ecstasy. That was how he partied after all.

March 16, a day during the Roman festival, Bacchanalia, 1821. According to some accounts, she was created when wine fell on the sand on the shores of Crete. Whether or not the accounts were true didn't particularly matter. Demetra had now been brought into the world, practically nursing off a wine bottle.

Demetra was raised on Crete in Ancient Greek ways (with a blend of Modern culture, as well). She lived with her father but was generally raised by his consorts, learning literature, math, languages, and how to fight. She knew little of the power she had within her, as the times when she saw her father were at parties, where she learned the ever important skill of distinguishing the quality of wines simply by sight and smell.

When Demetra was 20, she got into a fight with one of her father's consorts. He had a bad mouth on him and Demetra took it onto herself to break his face for it. Demetra had caught him mouthing off about the gods, talking some modern blasphemy and Demetra just wouldn't take it. So a full-on fight ensued, punches thrown on both sides, a full battle in the mud. Push came to shove and Demetra and the consort fell into a well. But this well wasn't a normal well. The two began to fall through time.

Modern Era

Demetra woke up face down in the mud in Sharkhead Isle. The consort was nowhere to be found and this definitely was not Crete. It was the Rogue Isles, a primarily dirty, rundown place that was nothing like Crete. She spent several years in the Rogue Isles, beating up whoever challenged her in underground fighting arenas. Winning those fights paid well and got her whatever wine she wanted (even though it just wasn't as good as what her father had). Demetra was undefeated; she just wasn't happy. The Isles just sucked. Badly.

Four years later, she got the hell out of the Rogue Isles. She'd adjusted somewhat to the modern era, the technology, the alcohol, the differences in speech. Fortunately being fluent in English helped. But anyway, she was finally out of that hellhole and found her way to Paragon City. She'd heard of America back on Crete but had never been there. The city was nice, tall, definitely modern. And had good wine. So she decided to stay. The place was much nicer than the Rogue Isles, and she could make plenty of money with arena matches and beating up purse snatchers. Worked out well, right? Nah, she still wasn't happy, just a bitter drunk.

Sometime after her 25th birthday, she ran into Charon on vacation. Yup, the Charon. And she also met some other demigods. Well this was an interesting turn of events.

Psychology

Demetra is almost always drunk. She keeps a flask somewhere (usually in a pocket or something) and is usually drinking wine from it (though Charon has been giving her ambrosia lately). She can generally tell how good wine is just by looking at it or smelling it.

Demetra is also generally violent, a trait she did not pick up from her father. She threatens to punch people in their faces and challenges people to try to best her. Her anger stems from being left by herself for a good deal of the time. Her father didn't pay much mind to her and she doesn't know her mother. Being raised by his consorts left her from feeling any sort of love. Her anger turned into violence, that being the only means to get attention. Her fighting manner is self-taught and raw yet incredibly powerful.

She's not entirely sure how to act human either. Her only role models were the consorts (who weren't exactly the most humble and honorable of people), and after falling through the time well, Arachnos and people attending the arenas. It's given her somewhat of a nasty personality.

Demetra has serious trust issues. Given the way she was raised, she hadn't really grown attached to anyone. The consorts came and went. She watched her father at parties, seeing how love was so fleeting for the sake of partying and ecstasy. Love meant nothing. Trust meant nothing. Nothing was permanent.

Deep down inside, Demetra longs for happiness. For now, it's something she can't reach yet, something impossible to find.

Demetra also has a tendency to nickname people. She nicknames them for how they look or act or where they come from. She has no trouble remembering names at all, but she expects people to simply leave, so remembering names seems somewhat pointless.

Charon is one of the few who has actually gotten her to believe something other than how nothing was permanent so she calls him by name. She is willing to give him more than a fleeting chance. Why? She isn't entirely certain, but he actually cares, something so foreign. Maybe listening to him will finally make her happy.
