Empty Silence

I originally created Empty as filler. I just wanted to see what a blaster could do. After she was admitted into the Echelon, she actually slowly became my main and my favorite. Empty soon became a detailed character, with a lot of personal meaning to me. She can be silly at times, and always tries to lighten the mood when things get serious. Much like me, she is very lighthearted, and can sometimes take things a little too far, though she always means well.

History

From Russia to the U.S.A.

Lisa Devark was raised in Moscow, Russia. She lived a happy life there, but grew restless with a government that restricted her freedoms. So as soon as she became eighteen, she made a beeline for the United States of America. She was ecstatic at what she found, a land of free people enjoying life, able to succeed as long as they had the drive to do so. She decided then that she wold be a success story as well, and applied and was accepted into Harvard. Lisa quickly discovered a problem that put a damper on her dream: the lack of money. Looking for ways to make money to afford school, she answered an ad she saw on television, an ad for CyberKnetick Institution.

CyberKnetick Institute for Research and Design

Lisa's job at CyberKnetick was a design assistant to Dr. Richard Zuniga. Their primary task was to create a technologically advanced reconnaissance suit for the military. After a few weeks on the job, she began to suspect something strange was going on. Men in black suits calling themselves the Council began appearing around her lab, saying they were there in order to make sure everything was going well. Lisa began to notice that Dr. Zuniga would act nervously around the Council members, and one day he began to fight with the Council over ethics. Lisa became frightened that CyberKnetick was not disclosing the full truth of her project to her. The day after Dr. Zuniga's fight with the council, he died in a mysterious car accident. Lisa was assigned as lead designer of the project, as she was the only one other than Dr. Zuniga who knew the project so well. She decided it was time to do some investigating.

As Lisa began to investigate the truth behind her project, she discovered it wasn't for the US military at all, but rather for the Council members! They wanted a suit that they could equip their own soldiers with, so they could better achieve their goals. Lisa then decided to a brave but foolish thing; she confronted the Council with what she found. They subdued her, and the next thing she knew, she was lying in a bed, restraints around her limbs.

The Experiment

The Council member in charge of the project was named Werber. It was up to him to ensure that the suit was completed on schedule. Werber thought it would be entertaining to turn the projects lead designer, Lisa, into a test subject. He needed a live subject to experiment on, but didn't want to waste Council lives if he didn't have to. So, he put Lisa into a coma and implanted a mind control chip into her brain, essentially turning her into a remote controlled human. They slowly began to implant the suit and it's mechanics into her central nervous system. Over a period of time, Werber began to shut down her natural bodily functions, to see if the suit would be able to take complete control of the body. The modifications he performed allowed the suit to take control of almost all the natural processes of the body. It could nourish her, heal her, even breathe for her. As the suit continued to improve, Werber removed her body's natural abiliies to do all these things, so that Lisa, even if she did break free of Werber, would always be reminded by the suit of her hellish torture. To remind Lisa to never speak out against her "benefactors," he cruelly cut out her tongue. Lisa, awake and terrified, could only watch in horror as her body did whatever Werber commanded of it.

The Rescue

Statesman and Back-Alley Brawler were sent on a routine mission to investigate the CyberKnentic Institute. They soon learned of a special tech-suit that would allow it's wearers to be virtually invincible, and knew it must be destroyed. They broke into the headquarters, and after fighting there way to the basement, discovered Werber's newly christened project, Empty Silence. Empty, as her will no longer existed, and Silence for the words she could never voice again. Statesman and Brawler fought desperately against Empty Silence, and after a long and grueling fight, Statesman went to make the final blow. Just as he was about to kill her, Empty Silence let out one pitiful moan, "Help...me..." He looked into her eyes and saw nothing but pain and misery as she blacked out. They took her back to Paragon City, to a resident scientist named Rick Davies. There, he was able to deprogram her, though she lost most her fighting capabilities. He was even able to fashion a set of speakers for her suit, so that she could "speak" again. Lisa Devark was as normal as she would ever get now, and vowed to to prove to Statesman and Back-Alley Brawler that she would be as heroic as they were to show her gratitude.

The Echelon

Empty Silence recently joined a group called The Echelon. She admires the camaraderie and fellowship there, as well as the sense of good in the members hearts. While she dissaproves heartily of The Echelon's forced working with villains, she is beginning to understand that it may be for the greater good. Recently, Empty Silence has begun to show an amazing aptitude for magic, and some magic users suspect had her life taken a different route, she would have become a hero in her own right. As it is, with the help of her magic and her friends, she is currently able to adjust to life without her suit more and more, though as of now she must wear it at least a little everyday. Recently, she has achieved her goal of being able to function without the suit.

The Virus

Empty contracted a virus during some routine updates in her system mainframe. The virus completely wiped her system, reducing her to only the basest of functions. Her good friend, Parl Dro, was able with a series of questions to "remind" the suit's systems that there was an external memory bank aboard the Shade Sentinel. The whole experience shook her, as she was reminded just how Dependant on the suit she still is. She worries that all is not right, even now with the virus purged from her system. After all, the programming handiwork of the virus reminded Empty eerily of Dr. Werber's style...
