Simon Nasso was and still is a motorcycle enthusiast, even though an accident five years ago took away both his arms at the shoulder blade. It was a late evening in Lawrence, Kansas. The roads were slicker than usual with the fresh droplets of rain reaching the asphalt moving the oil deposited by the many vehicles that have passed over recent days. He saw it coming, but there was no way for him to avoid it other than attempt to drive through it. For survival's sake he tired to thread the needle between the two vehicle that were sliding towards him. As if time had slowed he saw himself pass between the two cars but the clearance to avoid the vehicle behind them was moving to fast for him to swerve out of its line clipping the front corner flinging him from his motorcycle. The forced arced him back towards the back of the trucks trailer tires. He tired to pull his arms up to protect himself as much as possible but his speed was too much. He was now facing the accident from where he had come from and felt something roll over his right shoulder. Nothing seemed painful, but numb, he reached for his right shoulder, but his left arm wouldn't move. Rolling his head over to his left arm, only the threads from his jacket had kept his arm from being flung off to the unknown areas of the road. Shock began to settle in, his body began to convulse and his eyes fluttered and closed out of consciousness.
Welcome to the Hydra Project Database, I am your guide, Albert. If you would like to access the logs please enter the correct pass codes to proceed.
You look at the piece of paper that was handed to you moments ago before entering the room, walking up to the large LCD touch screens. You find keyboard in the lower right hand corner of the screen and begin typing them in, you then hear Albert's voice. Thank you, you now have full access to the Hydra Project Logs conducted by Simon Nasso. A note of interest is that he did not have an entry for every day, only accounting for the days he used the recorder. I will go on idle until you have finished. You take a seat in the large cushy leather chair in the center of the room drumming your finger on its arm and listen intently to the voice of Simon Nasso.
"First entry, August 3rd, 2006," Simon paused, "This has been the first full day since receiving my cybernetic arms. They are relatively crude, but they're sufficient enough to continue my education at the University of Kansas. I only have a couple weeks before returning, though the possibility of changing my major would be advantageous, by not having to rely on someone else to do any repair work on my arms or any upgrades that could be performed to enhance their capabilities."
"Entry 18, October 14th, 2006," breathes heavily into the microphone, "I have been able to produce new cybernetic arms with the help of my Professor and some of my classmates. I am deeply grateful and feel greatly indebted to them in their abilities to help me pursue greater things. The procedure to replace my current arms will happen within the next couple of days. They should be as if I had never lost my arms and be able to do surgeon-like work on anything that can be taken apart or built."
"Entry 36, May 28th, 2007," the usual pause in his voice before talking again, "It's my birthday, the second since the accident, my education has been progressing as I had intended since returning, however I have a pet project I want to pursue. Though the likelihood of it being feasible is a long shot, but it's a chance worth taking, coaxing reptilian and amphibious cells to react and grow with metal and computer chip electrodes. My work in robotics and my research into reptilian regeneration have made me think, maybe it's possible to make techno-organic appendages."
"Entry 45, September, 30th, 2007," Simon sighs, "Still no breakthroughs. I've tried almost every possible metal element combination, copper, iron, nickel, silver, gold, etc. and cannot produce the effect that I am after. Despite all of the setbacks I have given this project of mine a proper name, the Hydra Project, naming it after the Greek monster the Lernaean Hydra, some days it seems as if this project is a Herculean monster to me," he laughs for a moment before finishing his sentence, "its ability to regenerate three-fold after a head was sliced off is a fascinating concept."
"Entry 72, November 16th, 2007," Simon had been sitting down and you could hear his chair squeak as he had gotten up to pace the floor, "I had never thought that Impervium would be the answer, considering on how hard it is to come by, but Professor Holland suggested that it might be the only thing to work," you could tell in his voice it was a joyous revelation, "he was right, it's the only metal than can produce the correct cellular structure that can be used in creating body parts. However its growth is much slower than anticipated, but it maybe a small price to pay considering this is the only breakthrough since the beginning of this project."
"Entry 108, January 22nd, 2008," Simon sounded groggy, "We have amassed enough impervium to begin our procedure. We have constructed two impervium skeletal arms that will fit into my shoulder sockets and we are about to place them on me. To control the growth, we have created impervium mesh sleeves to suspend the skeletal structure within it. We had initially hoped we could have grown the arms without having to use a test subject, but that wasn't an option. Considering it is my project I volunteered myself. Here's hoping all my work will be a success."
You hear someone else's voice asking if the recorder is on. Simon says yes and begins to speak, "Entry 153, April 10th, 2008," he said, "Currently my arms have not completely formed, within the impervium casing, but we have conducted scans to see the progress internally, The nervous system, veins and arteries, and muscles have started to slowly form. There seems to be a minor side effect to this procedure. A small mass near the base of my spine near the hips has appeared. We have ruled out that it is cancerous, but it's something else. We will monitor it with the progress of my arms."
"Entry 154, April 19th, 2008," he seems surprised. "I now have full range of my arms, it's odd, that they finished growing in the past nine days and they have created a red circular pattern on the palm of my hand. I still don't know if I subconsciously made it excrete a blast of liquid energy. I was unaffected by it, but the ceiling was partially eaten away by the liquid that didn't hit my face. The small mass on my back has grown four-fold and has created it's own skeletal structure from the third lumbar vertebrae on my spinal cord. At this point they are still relatively small, we do not know when or if they will even emerge from the top of the mass, but it is a very likely possibility. We've poked and prodded it to see if I had any feeling in it. I do, but it doesn't hurt, at least not that this point."
"Entry 155, April 28th, 2008," Simon seems content with what he's about to say, "Another nine days, and a month before my twenty-fifth birthday. I began to practice with my hands at shooting moving objects a couple of days ago, I have to make the proper corrections in my head to actually hit them, but it has become rather fun. Regarding the mass on my back it has created its own impervium mesh casing much like an exoskeleton and sprouted the four skeletal arms, being encased much like my arms were. They too have created a red circular pattern at the end of each arm. I still can't tell if they're moving on their own or I have complete control over them. Only time will tell."
"Entry 162, May 28th, 2008," Simon cheerfully said in a commotion that could be heard in the background, you hear a chink of glasses coming together, "Despite the unforeseen addition on my back, we can proudly say that the Hydra Project was a success. That being said, I'd like to thank everyone here in this room that have supported me through this entire ordeal. We can use this research to apply to many other things that may appear and confidently walk out these doors with heads held high. I have decided to take our work to Paragon, where I will use these abilities to help mankind on the front lines as the many heroes have before me."
You stop at Simon's most recent entry, saying he has left for the city of Paragon City, RI for additional testing. You have the power to decide what you want to do with this information, aid him in his efforts in Paragon or tear down what he has build up in the lawless Isles. You tell Albert that you have finished your research. Thank you for using me as your guide, when you are ready to leave the room I shall lock it down. You thank Albert and exit the room, hearing the chink and thunk of the door closing behind you.
"Are we making good time," Simon asked to his driver, "thanks again for helping me again, Professor Holland."
"Yeah, we should be in town in a couple of hours," Professor Holland laughs, "I said you can call me Dexter now, you are no longer my student."
Simon chuckled, "I'm sorry, I forget that now, and you've done so much for me I'd figure I'd still give you the honor."
The hours passed by quickly and the looming shadow of Atlas' statue signaled their arrival to Paragon City. Hopping out of the side of the van, Simon looked up the stairs where a number of hero were massed around the famous Ms. Liberty, the grand daughter of the great hero Statesman. He hits the side of the van and tells Dexter to take the van to his apartment and setup shop while he registers as a hero. Left, right and overhead people ran, jumped, and flew by as he made his way into Paragon's city hall. Coming to the desk where a young dressed woman in a business suit asked him if he was here for registration.
"Yes," he said.
"What name would you like to be know as," she said.
He thinks about it for a moment, "Hydra seems appropriate."
"Sir, I'm afraid you cannot use that name, it belongs to a disgusting group of gelatinous creatures," said calmly said.
"Oh, well then how about Enneagon," he quipped, "The nine-sided polygon."
"So Enneagon, the nine-sided hero, then," she asked as she scribbled on a piece of paper.
"Alright, now what," he questioned.
"Give us a couple of days to process it and it will be delivered to you to your address," she answered.
"Thanks," Simon said.
Taking the tram to Steel Canyon, he sees Dexter's van and trailer sitting in front of his apartment complex. Folding his extra four arms on either side of his back he walked up the steps into his new home. "Ah, there you are," Dexter said, "You're reran to go."
Simon puts two thumbs ups and smiles, "Awesome, if you ever want to visit just ask. I'll keep up my end of the bargain by trying to find a way to reproduce appendages without the added extension in our first test on me."
"Will do," Professor Dexter Holland said.
Soon to come.
