Background
Firegon’s history began in the waning years of World War II. The scientist Dr. Howard Marshall and his and assistant son Edward Marshall had preliminary designs for a battle suit that could be used by rank-and-file soldiers to go toe-to-toe with nazi war machines, and aid the Allied superhumans in fighting nazi supervillains. Dr. Marshall received a grant from the government to begin work on the suit, codename: Dragon-1. The prototype, dubbed the Irongon, proved to be successful in the field but the cost to design an army such a machine was impractical, at best, for the Allies to afford. The government locked the Irongon away, and Dr. Howard moved on to other projects.
5 years after the mothballing of the Irongon, Edward Marshall’s wife was murdered in cold blood by the minor supervillain Black Sky. Edward went to the police for aid, but his father Dr. Marshall had other plans. With his government I.D.s, Howard was able to gain access to the Irongon and steal it. He tracked down Black Sky, and fought the supervillain in the Hollywood hills. Black Sky had control over the weather, and the barrage of lightning severely damaged Irongon. However, Black Sky could not stand up to the strength of the battle suit. In the end, both Black Sky and Howard perished in the battle. The Irongon was destroyed, but Howard was able to avenge the murder of his daughter-in-law.
Edward followed in his father’s footsteps and became an engineer. He obsessed over improving the Irongon’s design. He felt that it was the best way to honor the sacrifice of his father. He had left the raising of his son Henry, who was 4 years old at the time of his mother’s death, to nannys and teachers. Henry grew up resenting his father, and hating the Irongon. Edward completed a new design for the battle suit, dubbing it the Steelgon. This time, he designed it around urban combat and focused his attention on matching the incredible powers of superhumans rather than tanks. He was 54 by the time he completed the Steelgon, and turned to his Henry to become the Steelgon’s pilot. Henry had become a respected police officer for Paragon city, and refused to even see the Steelgon. The Steelgon was used several times by Edward, but he found it too cumbersome to pilot. He scrapped the suit, and turned his attention to something lighter and more durable.
In 2006, the Marshall family was struck with tragedy again. The Paragon City police were led into an ambush by Cogs. 12 police were killed, including Kalen. He left behind a widow and a son, Jeff. Jeff was 17 at the time, and the news of his father’s death shattered his world. His mother, Alice Marshal, was strong and it was because of her that Jeff avoided a downward spiral to drugs or an even darker path. Alice knew of the Henry’s father, and she knew of the Irongon and Steelgon. She had stood by Henry’s decision to make little mention of Jeff’s grandfather, but when the alien invasion occurred, she began to second guess that decision. To her, if the Steelgon was active and working with the Paragon City police and superheroes, more people may have survived the attack. When Henry was killed, she brought the truth to her son.
Jeff and his mother found out that Edward was still alive, and still lived in Paragon City. He had made a good deal of money from patenting several revolutionary advances in personal body armor and had his personal lab. He was aware of Henry’s death, and was at his son’s funeral. He had watched Jeff grow up from afar. Initially Jeff and Edward’s meetings were formal and brief, but as time progressed, the two grew to accept each other like the family they were. Months after their first meeting, Jeff was introduced to the latest battle suit design: the firegon. Edward built the firegon suit from scratch, working with new alloys and nanotechnology in order to make the suit more flexible, maneuverable, durable, and more powerful than either of the previous suits. Jeff eagerly donned the suit and took on the title of Firegon.
