Person Review

Knight, he’s an odd one. The kid seems shy, not to us, but to everyone else. He usually seems very reserved, although the two sleeves on each arm would suggest otherwise. Those tattoos on his arms represent different milestones of his life and career, hell he even got one specially added when we accepted him permanently. Regardless, the kid knows when to speak and when to act, a trait that many of my younger soldiers could really use! Generally well mannered, he treats his patients with respect and kindness – God knows how, but he does. –Note, casually he dresses like a tramp. –Note 2, buy the kid a shirt.

The kid’s about six two, six three and pure muscle, a regime I thought he would have given up after starting permanent work with the doctors in the nest, all that preaching about fitness must come first hand. No scars, no tan, he left Canada how many years ago? Err… Minor blemishes around the implant areas, I presume those will clear up… Two full sleeve tattoos, mix and match, real messy. From installing and removing that suit, I believe both lead onto his pecs.

Aside from the occasional emotional remark, or the awkward conversation killer, Knights a damn good soldier, and I’m proud to have him serve us.

Update

Knight was never designed to be a soldier, on the outside he's taken to the lifestyle expertly- but it's on the inside that worries me. He has too many morals, too many opinions of how things should happen, I've noticed him questioning orders. He always harped on about acting with integrity and professionalism to protect others, but it wasn't that long ago he was demerited for being drunk on the job. In his last interview he expressed concerns for his partners safety, which I have concluded to be the link towards working with these experimental implants- which the previous versions left him with permanent side-effects. Either Cole is not taking his career seriously or something big is on the cards. I don't believe he is fully aware of the failures of using such devices, which private J. Rainey should have informed him on.

A recent mission has caused him some permanent scarring on his left arm, mainly around the bicep – see mission log: entry 2123-[CLASSIFIED-NON EXCITENT]. I believe this is the reason he has began removing his tattoos, using the new laser system private J. Rainey installed in the private medical bay. Aside from this, I can confirm that Knight is still maintaining peak physical health although four hours sleep a night, seven nights a week is not doing him any favours. I will consult with the head of department to try and decrease his work hours, perhaps give the interns a chance.

Emotionally, I am concerned about Knight, I have received word that he has returned to drinking alcohol in his spare time – he has defended the statement by suggesting it helps with the PSI implant v1 side-effects. Judas and Knight have been hell bent working on, funding, researching and perfecting the PSI implant v2 – both have received official statements from Lady Grey asking to cease their activity under the name of Vanguard. Judas dismissed the statements, saying “If she has a problem with research into defending the human psyche against these extraterrestrial-terrorists, perhaps she does not have Vanguards best interests in mind. After all, Vanguard means to 'move forward' – and I plan to equip our soldiers with the latest tech available in this war against the Rikti.”. Officers have stated that only someone with Raineys experience and friendship with Lady Grey would be able to get away with such a statement. Cole has not officially commented on the situation.

Regardless of his disposition, Cole and the rest of the squad have been getting more assignments than ever, more interestingly – less to do with the Rikti and more to do with a 'Psi terrorist cell' that has connections to the Rikti. Performance reviews are suggesting that Cole is spreading himself too thin, due to the work on the implants, working the medical bay during the day and his primary employment with the recon-squad. If he continues down this path, he will eventually become a reckless team-member and won't have the power to sustain himself, as well as protect others.

Update:

Official intervention is being given to Knight, as well as re-training and a re-organised work pattern.

Powers

Gravity

Cole’s primary ability is gravity control. He is able to manipulate the weight, structure and position of gravitational fields. This has resulted in numerous abilities being formed, however his primary training has taught him to ‘lockdown’ opponents. Propulsion tactics have enabled Cole to turn normal objects into weapons, for example, using a wrecked tank as cover – or using it as large missile. Propulsion also allows Cole to ‘fly’ or ‘levitate’ depending on how he manipulates local gravity. This can also work to his advantage, sending opponents soaring through the sky. Cole has recently been able to recreate a miniature singularity using his power-suits, by creating spaces of infinite gravity. This also allows him to create wormholes, though much more complex, control is always an issue; however both power-suits are built with gravity vacuum methods to prevent loss of control – in the event that Cole may actually plunge a self-absorbing black-hole into earth’s atmosphere.

New training has given Cole the opportunity to create gravitational 'blasts' – allowing him to blast targets with newtons of gravitational force, crippling them. His hand-to-hand combat training has also improved with the use of gravitational 'strikes', depending on how quickly he has to create them, they can cause foes to soar away from Cole across large distances – and in combination with his other training, allows for quick escape methods.

Force Fields

Force fields, by compacting and relocating kinetic particles, he has the ability to protect objects and people. Depending on the magnitude of compression Cole can create semi-solid shields, for example, allowing an ally to shoot through a force field, but protect them from incoming fire. This has an extremely high draining process on Cole, and has often knocked him out. Although the suits allow him to calculate further processes simultaneously, without them, Cole cannot effectively create a solid barrier – this would require too much strain on his behalf, and in a team based situation, would probably cause Cole to exhaust himself. When Cole’s sole focus is on creating force fields, he has been known to create them so tight – that particles cannot enter or exit the force field. This can be used to his advantage or disadvantage, for example, creating a force field of this magnitude would remove the ability to breathe, however it can also stop radiation effecting whoever is inside the force field.

This also gives Cole the advantage of 'soft-control' tactics in a combat environment, using force fields to blast his enemy’s away or simply create 'safe zones' in which most enemy's would not be able to enter. This has proven to give Cole excessive situational control, allowing him to carry out field-repairs and operations safely and securely away from direct combat.

Munitions Training

Like most soldiers, Cole has ample munitions training in a variety of different weapons. Certificates indicate that he specialises with pistols, shotguns and beam rifles. Despite this training, Cole does not regularly carry weapons, due to weight restrictions on his suits. When engaging in combat, it is almost counter productive for Cole to use a weapon, due to reaction times, his suits processing power would have to redirect memory to carry out these calculations, when it would be quicker to react with some form of gravity manipulation. However, in his regular Vanguard suit he will normally carry two pistols on each side of his hip and a shotgun across his lower back.

History

A Star Was Born

Cole Knight is the son of Colonel Robert Knight of the Canadian Forces, and Flight Medic Caroline Knight. Born into a militaristic home, Cole was destined to follow his parent’s footsteps in defending their homeland and securing a better world.

From a young age, Cole had always been interested in a medical career, but due to his age, his mutation had been mostly been dormant, and wouldn’t begin to form until his adolescence. This gave them enough time to properly educate Cole, as they both knew he wouldn’t have a normal childhood.

A controller?

Often when a child discovers they have ‘mutant’ abilities, it can be a messy and difficult process training such abilities. Cole was no exception – and to this day he still fights to remain fully in control of his abilities. He first learnt of his powers one afternoon, not long after his eleventh birthday, by passing out. A medical report later suggested that Cole suffered from a lack of oxygen intake. Neither parent were able to understand how his came about, as Cole had always been a healthy youngster, so their first guess was “it’s finally happening”.

Slowly they became aware that Cole was controlling the weight of local particles, and had in-fact created a small energy shield around himself – locking out all oxygen in the process. Needless to say this created a spark of excitement about what Cole would be able to do when he had fully developed, and for the next year, Cole underwent vigorous training. Initially the training was to help control his abilities, but due to his parent’s inexperience with such abilities, it became apparent that Cole would require specialist training

Luckily, his father knew just the place…

Born To Be

A few weeks after Coles twelfth birthday, he was accepted into a military academy designed to assist gifted adolescents with achieving their full potential, within a military environment. It was during his extensive training here that he was credited with his first medical certificate which lead him further down his current path.

For three long years, his body had been sculpted to house his talents, his mind was conditioned to comprehend said talents, his educational studies flourished – and ultimately, Cole was being recognized as an esteemed gravity controller.

Initial training taught Cole to ‘lock’ objects down, applying harsh and heavy gravity fields around said objects. This could result in numerous problems when used on a live target, so Cole was never trained using them. He was also taught how to control objects paths, such as a bullet. He was often placed with his back to a target and told to ‘shoot it’. This garnished a strong understanding of area based interactions, and allowed Cole to develop and carry out multiple tasks, such as carrying out basic medical procedures, while assisting his teammate’s accuracy, while also stopping incoming projectiles. These simulations emulated high-stress combat environments, and further proved his decision to pursue a militaristic career.

Happy Birthday

May 9th, 2002. Coles sixteenth birthday, graduation was fast approaching, but Cole was on top of everything, a week off wouldn’t kill him. So he planned to go home for the week. He was planning on leaving on Friday the 17th, and returning on Friday the 24th however, things didn’t go as planned.

The 23rd of May, 2002. Everyone remembers it. Cole had spent the week at home with his parents, they had a barbeque, and he met all his old friends. Things were good. He couldn’t wait to graduate. Things were really good.

It started when his father was quickly called to work, Cole was bummed, he was going back to the academy tomorrow, so they said their goodbyes, after all, Cole would soon graduate and return home for summer break.

Cole didn’t know this would be the last time they would see each other.

As reports started flooding in that an alien invasion was under way, it wasn’t long before his mother was also called to work, injuries quickly piled up, and it was her job to save as many lives as possible.

The Call

Left alone at his parent’s house, Cole was packing his things, intending to return to the academy, when he got the call. The owner of the academy was lending the support of all students to the defense and protection of ‘paragon city’.

On the 24th May, the academy had gathered their students and had planned to airdrop them straight into the battle – a bold move, considering none of the students had any live training.

Cole was NOT ready!

This is NOT a Drill!

A forward operation base had been constructed in Galaxy City, and would be there first site to defend. The mission was simple; defend the site while the heroes defeated the Rikti.

It took eight students to protect the aircraft long enough to make a drop in Galaxy City, numerous force fields, extensive brain power and still the aircraft was shot down by Rikti assault-crafts.

Four hours in and the operation was a failure. Around half of the team was dead and there seemed to be no end to the Rikti forces.

Cole’s last memory of the event was defending his last teammate, Judas, from a particle blast. They had been ambushed on their way through Perez Park, to Atlas Park, Judas was barely able to hold a gun, and Cole might as well have been dead. A large hulking alien teleported directly in front of the pair, with a hand-cannon almost as large as Judas! Cole tried to close his eyes, but the pain throbbing from his head wouldn’t allow him such comfort. Silently a large, colorful blast erupted at point black from the weapon, Cole barely managed to deflect the blast, his pain-laden mind barely able to comprehend the structure of such a blast, let alone rip it apart at a molecular level. Judas roared opening fire on the alien as Cole collapsed.

Cole eventually woke from his coma in extensive pain. Strapped to a medical bed, a few hours later an incredibly stressed doctor managed to rush to his bedside. It was Cole’s mom.

In the space of ten minutes, he found out he had been in a coma. It was now September. His father was presumed MIA. And Judas had joined the Vanguard after carrying Cole to this medical facility almost four months ago.

Welcome to the Vanguard

A few weeks later, Cole was ready to return to action – well, actually he wasn’t, but he had no choice. Judas introduced him to his commanding officer: Ryan Sterling. It wasn't long before Ryan was trying to get Cole on-board, initially numbers were needed, and 'supers' were a bonus. Ryan had to have him in his squad.

And so began the new team, towards the end of the first Rikti invasion, formed within Vanguard, with an almost limitless budget, it was time to get to work.

Second Rikti Invasion

Under the supervision and guidance of his new teammates, Cole further developed his abilities, and had been serving as a medical technician. With the Rikti invasion over, Vanguard has supposedly dissolved… Or so the public would have been led to believe. Sterling’s team was very much so active between 2002 and 2007.

When the second Rikti invasion began, this time they were ready.

Cole had a new found understanding and control over his abilities, on patrols of the city; he was often spending extensive amounts of time carrying out emergency medical procedures on the field. Cole was able to lock down enemies while performing procedures, while also encasing himself and allies in protective force fields. Never shy of a battle Cole often followed his teammates onto the field, supporting them however he could.

During the second invasion Judas commissioned Cole two power-suits to increase and expand his abilities further. He also gained experimental psionic implants, while they would not be given to him without first experimenting; they were a gift designed only for Cole.

2010

2010 was an odd year for Cole. He was discharged from Vanguard, and removed from his team. He was also undergoing highly experimental resistance training, and finally made use of the psionic implants.

At the start of the year, Cole had agreed to use the implants to cover all gaps in his defence. While attacking him is near impossible, he has no protection from mental and psionic abilities. Judas convinced him this would help in the battle against the Rikti due to their mental powers. At first the implants were fine, they did give him some minor protection from all things psionic, however they were incredibly dangerous, often sending Cole into different forms of mental shock, he began to suffer from different forms of depression and anxiety – which eventually would be discovered, was due to the implants.

Towards the end of the year, Commander Sterling had regrettably been informed that two of his squad members were engaging in a secret relationship. Cole and Judas were taken under review, and under the don’t ask, don’t tell policy, were discharged. Initially, Sterling tried to shield the two from stepping into the trap, but when confronted, Judas set him straight, telling him that they had been in a relationship for over a year. This split the squad. Someone had reported them. None of the squad cared; they didn’t want to lose their team over something so petty. Sterling was forced to remove his team’s only C/EMT.

The team quickly disbanded, and the reporter was quickly found out. Sterling eventually gathered enough dirt on her to have her discharged, but it seemed apparent that this wouldn’t repair the relations of the team. In his rage, Cole lashed out at Judas, severing their own relationship – in defence from Coles attack; Judas locked him in stasis, mid attack. This began the resistance conditioning training that began to increase Cole’s power. If Cole was locked in stasis while stressing his abilities, it forced his body to adapt to high-strain situations. However, for weeks after being released from stasis, Cole was incredibly weakened. They performed this type of training multiple times in 2010 in a vain attempt to gain power, something, previous to Coles discharge, he had no interest in.

Burnout

Early 2011, Coles control over gravity and energy peaked. However stasis training went wrong. After being relieved from the stasis, Cole dropped straight into a coma, his eyes and nose had instantly began bleeding – and was presumed to have suffered some form of brain damage.

Judas took him to the only place he knew… Vanguard.

After waking from his coma May 2011, a full medical report showed Cole had snapped through a combination of losing his job, stress, extensive training and the psionic implants.

However, everything was about to change.

Commander Sterling approached Cole while he was on bed-rest. He informed Cole, that while he was out, don’t ask, don’t tell was being repelled. And from September, Cole would once again be able to serve. Initially Cole declined, out of spite. But when he found out that Sterling never wanted him gone, and that the old team was reforming for a series of high-risk missions, Cole wanted everything to go back to normal.

Cole Knight: officially reinstated 20th September 2011.

Combat Medical Technician.

Recon-Squad, II

‘Barrier Holder’

Present Day

Cole currently spends most of his days working in the medical bay in the Vanguards main base of operation. Cole also carries out Vanguard related missions with his team – which recently have been dealing with other dimensional threats. They have also adopted ‘street’ personas and have been known to assist heroes with crime related issues – specifically dimensional threats.

Sometime after Coles reinstatement, Judas overseen the operation to remove Coles psionic implants – the operation was a success, but Cole may live with the side effects for years to come. Due to their previous history together from the academy right through the wars, Judas and Cole continue to work very closely. Judas continues to research methods of strengthening Cole’s abilities, and Cole continues to protect his brother-in-arms. Together they deal with smaller problems that don’t require the full squad’s attention. The pair is often invited to return to the academy to tutor young aspirants – while this would suit Judas much more, one won’t leave the other, and Cole doesn’t believe he has the knowledge yet to teach the next generation.

Recently Cole’s mother was stationed back in Canada, but previous to this, Cole assisted her on a few FP-C recovery operations. His father is now presumed KIA; his mother swore her life to protect others from the same situation.

Something big is happening within the Vanguard, Cole doesn't know what it is, but there has to be a reason that the recon-squad II is being sent on a LOT more mission than the other five squads. Not to mention the fact that all of the missions seem to be regarding a 'Psi' terrorist cell, that allegedly have 'links' with the Rikti. Rather than think too much about it, Cole is amid research that will hopefully provide a breakthrough in psi-damage and control on the effected target. Cole and Judas have been constructing a new PSI implant based on the side-effects of the previous one, and also managed to create a new pain-killing drug in the process, which there are no known details about – yet. But it could provide the funding for their project, should Vanguard decide all of this research is not worth funding.

As his career and work weighs heavy on Cole’s conditioned mind, his new goal in life is to finally create a home and settle down – safely, with the man he loves.
