Introduction
Garnet Maven is a relatively new hero. Coming onto the scene with minor control over magma and time, she immediately affiliated herself with the Sushi Schoolgirl Squad. While her exact origin has been kept intentionally vague, some aficionados might recognize some similarities between her and an unknown obsessive fangirl.
Known Information
Garnet Maven first appeared January 31st, 2008. With a relatively simple costume consisting of an old racing motorcycle outfit, a pair of tinted sunglasses, and hair dye, she has managed to seek out S3 operations and "offer help", whether or not it was desired. Some astute people might notice that she is surprisingly similar to a fangirl that has appeared sporadically at their missions. This fangirl would come unannounced, fully intending to "help" and with some new angle as to how she can help. Having tried all sorts of fighting styles such as various forms of martial arts, fencing, archery, and marksmanship, often also appearing with some faulty technology or artifact she somehow obtained. Almost always, she would get in over her head and prove to be a liability, endangering the mission as the Sushis would have to rescue her as an additional objective. Despite the fact that she is told to stay away every time, she refused to just stand on the sidelines.
Powers
In an interview with a S3 fan magazine, Garnet Maven outlined her powers. Claiming that she draws from an "ancient amulet" (it's pretty obvious she made that up), she explains in detail the methodology to her abilities.
Magma Control (Fire Control)
Garnet Maven is able to produce magma through some unknown means. While it has all the same properties as real magma, it dissipates if she takes her focus off of it.
- Char: She creates some magma and throws it at a target. The magma itself isn't that hot, but the noxious gas it produces leaves the target helpless as they choke.
- Magma Circles (Fire Cages): She generates circles of magma around her targets. The convection causes damage while most targets are unable to step out of their circles.
- Magma Flow (Hot Feet): She generates a constant flow of magma from her feet, which burns those around her. While not at quite the same temperature as real magma, it is still dangerous.
- Magma Burst (Flashfire): She generates a minor explosion of magma in a targeted area, spreading noxious gas all around. This causes those within the area to be disoriented.
- Volcanic Ash (Cinders): She generates a volcanic reaction around herself, spreading ash around. This ash both burns away oxygen while also clogging lungs, leaving the people in the target area gasping for air.
- Magma Spirits (Fire Imps): She is able to call forth manifestations of magma, which will mindlessly follow her around and attack anything she affects with her powers. They do not require her to focus on them to maintain, but still need her active in order to stay around.
- Magma Shield (not an in game power): She is able to imbue herself and other people with a protection against her magma. While it is a near-perfect shield, it only works on protecting people against her specific magma. This effect is permanent and can only be dispelled by Garnet Maven herself.
Time Manipulation (Kinetics)
Garnet Maven also has some minor control over time itself. Through the manipulation of the time surrounding her environment and people, she is able to cause all sorts of effects. Since time is not a consumable resource, she needs to draw it from a source. Still, she's sometimes been able to draw power with seemingly no source at all[1].
- Time Reversal (Transfusion): By setting a target's physical structure into a future state, she is able to revert the physical structures of the people near her target to when they were less damaged. It can only revert a couple seconds worth of activity, though.
- Siphon Power: By slowing down the force of movement in the weapons (natural, artificial, or otherwise) of her target, it reduces the damage caused by it as it strikes slower. At the same time, she also spreads that time to the weapons of herself and nearby allies, increasing the speed of effect the weapons take.
- Siphon Speed: By altering the time around a target, she is able to slow them down considerably. The excess time is sent into her, speeding her actions.
- Dampening Field (Increase Density): By draining time from an unknown source[1], she is able to set up a field that reduces the force of impact of objects entering it. It also has the effect of preventing a multitude of other effects.
- Acceleration (Speed Boost): By draining time from an unknown source[1], she is able to significantly increase the speed of a target for a period of time.
- Transference: She is able to shift a target to a later point of time when would have used more of their natural energy, transferring the excess energy to whoever is near her that she desires.
- Fulcrum Shift: Similar to Siphon Power, but on a mass scale.
Extended Time Manipulation (Psionic Mastery)
- Desynchronization (Indomitable Will): By drawing from an unknown source[1], she is able to selectively desynchronize herself. This makes her highly resistant to
- Timeless (Mind Over Body): Her timeless nature has made her naturally resilient. Normal physical attacks are lessened, while psionic damage is less effective due to the lack of total synchronization her timeless nature offers.
- Vortex (Psionic Tornado): Summons one of the small ruptures from an unknown location[1] to her. It proceeds to violently destabilize anything that enters it. It dissipates very quickly, though.
Pools
Defying Gravity 101 (Swift, Combat Jumping, Super Jump, Acrobatics): One beginning class that is required of all Sushi Schoolgirl Squad members is a class on defying gravity (both in physical acrobatics and in wardrobe). Garnet Maven, through a combination of nitpicking videos, compiling information from weblogs and fansites, and from an old notebook she scavenged from the S3 dumpster, has effectively taken this class. While she isn't quite endowed enough to apply its principles to her wardrobe, she has been capable of the same sort of acrobatic abilities as a Sushi Schoolgirl years before she became an official hero.
Stylistic Flair 101 (Assault, Tactics): Sushi Schoolgirls, through their ostentatious quirks, extravagant outfits, and complex battle techniques, have an inspiring effect on all who witness them. Garnet Maven has taken much of what she could observe to heart, but she lacks the je-ne-sais-quoi that most Sushi Schoolgirls possess.
Cellular Acceleration (Health, Stamina): Her cells naturally heal faster.
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 While no conclusive link has been proven yet, a number of dimensional ruptures leading to the Oni dimension have started to spring up in Antarctica starting January 29th, 2008. As of yet, nothing that has been able to survive the trip through one of these unstable portals have also been able to subsequently survive the bitter cold.
